Autoblog: VW Golf VI

I’m so happy they stole some elements from the Scirocco, especially the grille. I hope this marks the end of VW’s bucktooth–chrome-plated–pseudo-Audi nonsense.

That looks good but I cant make a judgement until I see what the gti will look like. Until then I will like my MKV the best :).👍

Looks like the Scirocco will define the corporate face after all...

That being said, some thoughts:

- Its reminding me of a bigger, more-round version of the MKII from the front. Probably due to the massive black grille.

- The interior looks amazing for a car this size, of what I assume will be a very low cost.

- I'd say the rest of the car is above-average in look and quality, but I don't expect them to win any style awards. If the Civic is downright "daring" in shape, this is about as close to WonderBread as you can get.

- I do hope they ditch the 2.5L I5 in the US. For fuel-economy, they need to go with a smaller I4 and a turbocharger. Keep the 2.0T in the lineup, and I think they'll manage to keep most people happy.

- One last thing: BRING BACK THE CLASSIC MODEL DESIGNATIONS! I can't stand this new system... It was far easier with GL, GLS and GLX.

It looks exactly the same as the current one! Not that the current one isn’t already a good interior for a small car, but it looks like all they did was give it a new (uglier) steering wheel.

Speaking of which, what's with this new trend to put a circular hub thing in the middle?

I’ve been wondering about that myself. It’s like HEY! THERE’S AN AIRBAG IN HERE! A CIRCULAR ONE!

As Doug can attest to, few things make me more upset than a steering wheel that advertises its airbag.

All I want to know if there will be utterly bonkers R-model, perhaps R36 with the 300bhp 3.6l V6 from the Passat? :trouble:

That might even be an alternative to say, the new STI Impreza for that matter. It would be awesome to see that happen.

Then again, there's slight chance that the Scirocco will deal with the sporty image instead of Golf. I wonder if the beetle will ever receive an update..

Looks totally like the Scirocco but just slightly not as good looking... as Clarkson said with the Golf and Scirocco prices so similar who's going to buy one of these!

MKIV still looking best.

I love the Scirocco looks, but the Touareg-like rearlights make it look too big...

The MkVI Golf is designed to be cheaper than the Mk5, so they'll no longer be competing on price.

I quite like this design, if it's accurate 👍 And a cheaper Golf can only be a good thing, the price has been as inflated as the bodywork with each new version. Please VW, make the MkVI smaller and lighter than the MkV

It'll be interesting seeing a GTI version.

They copied Volkswagen- right.

Looks cleaner, but not necessarily a visually striking machine. As for the steering wheel, perhaps so certain consumers know exactly where the horn is? (sarcastic)

Looks more like the Mk IV again.:odd: I'm not a fan of this one, Mk V was better.

MKIV still looking best.

*ahem*

I continue to believe the MKII was the best-looking Golf despite only owning one in parts. That's why the grille makes me so happy with the MKVI, reminds me a lot of the MKII.

Great, so it looks similar to the Scirocco and have similar performance. But I think this will be the end for the Golf as a 3-door hatchback. :( Seems to be that way because the Scirocco is already a 3-door hatchback and would be pointless if the Golf was made the same. But still, a Golf is still a Golf and many of the Golf enthusiast would like it this way. A GTi and a special R model should be available to the Golf and hopefully for the Scirocco as well...... 👍

I'm not completely sold...It looks ENORMOUS. A midsize car like the Malibu, with the backside lopped off.

Golfs just look bland next to all the other cars that are coming out now. They're good cars but nothing special to look at anymore.

I've already mentioned, this Golf is designed to be cheaper than the current Golf (and the Scirocco), so a 3dr Golf won't be competing on price with the Scirocco. Plus, they'll not ditch the chance to have a 3dr GTI.

If you think about it logically, they continued making 3 door Golfs whilst the original Scirocco was out, so there'd be no reason to stop now. Plus, VW are big on niche models so they'll want to cover every possible market sector, whether one model overlaps with another or not.

I do hope this model is smaller than it looks from the pics. And at least 100kg lighter than the current one. Then I'll sit up and take notice.

Oh, and YSSMAN... I reckon the Mk1 looks better :D Sharper lines, smaller, more purposeful...

It really blends all 5 generations together.

Since no-one is giving love for the MKIII,

I quite like the Mk3. To be honest, the only Golf I'm not crazy about is the Mk5. The GTI version and the R32 are the only good looking models.

And for those worried about there being no 3-door variant of the Mk6, if you'd followed the links through Autoblog to their original source you'd have found pics of the 3 door yourselves:

I'd still vote MKII for the 16V engine alone, then MKIII because I had one. The MKIII had the cleanest overall look in my opinion (still German purposeful, still spunky however), but the MKII is tops.

The MKIV started this new-wave look, and while I do like the "modern" appearance, the newer cars are just a bit too heavy these days.

I'm liking the front. The rear is a bit boring, but overall the car looks better than the MKV for me. Hopefully they offer some decent wheels.
