That would be a cool mini game. Driving the cars in the circuit parking lots.
From what you said, i would honestly love having Beige Edition as it's own thing. Yes, as a fully-fledged, standalone game with a seperate game engine.

If the team would've done this, it could be beneficial as for one, they don't have to strictly follow the 1999 model cap. They could've included some of the more malaise 2000s cars, added more content like tracks, features, and gamemodes. But maybe they could still keep the PS1 graphics, they're very whimsy :)

But the kicker is that, since it would be classified as it's own thing, and as the team didn't have permission or guidance from the makes featured, standalone Beige would've been very vulnerable to get into a legal issue. Making Beige under the guise as a mod is a bit (or maybe way more) safer and time-saving than making it it's own thing from scratch.

Plus the tiny point that making an entire game is orders of magnitude more work than building new content for an existing game, and would need a much larger team including a full set of programmers, sound engineers, and so on. Beige Edition is already a mammoth undertaking, and I think building it on a realistically achievable foundation is good project management.

I suspect the 1999 model year decision and the use of GT2 as a base are also basically because the team want to do that, and not that they're being forced to in some way.

I get why you'd think this but for me personally I'd have absolutely zero interest in making a game and plunging it into the oversaturated indie racing market even if it was an easier undertaking

Using GT2 as a base you get a decent enough physics engine out of the box, AI, track list and a relatively understood modding foundation. It also can't be understated how much using Gran Turismo gives this mod a publicity boost. There's absolutely no guarantee the people here would have even known it existed if this was a standalone project. You can put all the work in, have all the hype and still sell almost nothing

The model year cap is purely in keeping with this base game, although the model year designations wouldn't work on the car select other then that there's no issues with adding newer cars it's just self imposed.

I've said it a few times but I don't think the game actually needs extra tracks, the base game tracks offer decent variation, good design and above all work out the box (Motor Sports Land and Reverse Grindelwald aside). Adding more tracks would be nice but I don't actively think it would benefit the mod all that much beyond the scenery change

Listening to your statement, i got your point. I've seen a handful of cool indie projects but they mostly go under the radar. People love it more when you modify an recognizable classic than thrust something new up their necks.

And as Pez said aswell, the resources needed to make standalone Beige, with it's aspects will not be viable for the quite small team. Although yes there are indie racing games being developed by only even 1-3 dudes with only minor external help, they mostly fall into the more arcadey side with fictional cars and a lot more stylization. Unlike Beige with it's real world cars and GT-style play pattern. Which also again proves Pez's point, the resources. You need to spend a lot of time to even make an even decent handling model that fits with a wide range of vehicles. And when it came to those vehicles, you can't just look up them on Google since their incomplete, and there's also no models to base off since this is a standalone game. You need to take the plunge and scour the globe for the cars which i think a good amount of dosen't even exist anymore in current day.

Thinking 'bout it that sounds like a catastrophic amount of effort for an indie team. If you suggest this to a big, established game company, they will never consider giving it a go, it's too risky for their corporate minds. So yeah the point of my words is that, yes. Making Beige a mere mod is the way to go.

Not quite sure what you mean by this? The models in Beige don't utilise anything from base GT2 models? Could be misreading that

Some of the cars, especially retrims and rebadges (or atleast in the earlier days) are alterations of existing models from GT2. Right? That's what i mean by that

Ahh right yeah I get you now, yeah that's certainly a help although it is more on the minority of the car list

Roughly 1/4 (180 of 470+) but hey that's still a big number and since you've said you guys past 180 recently and there's more where that's coming from, the GT2 models are a vital resource!

155-160 trim changes and about 30-35 base game cars although as mentioned prior quite a few of those are getting remodeled

One more question from me for the night,

How old are we getting for the model years in Beige? The oldest car currently is the Life Step Van from '74 if i'm not wrong. Excluding malaise-era Americans (roughly 70s - early 90s) will we get like say, a Citroen DS/Dyane, earlier BMC/BL Minis, Subaru 360 from basegame, some of the 60s - 70s Japanese cars (Corollas, Contessas, '74 Civics, etc.), Morris Minors, etc.?

Oldest car is 1970, decided to focus on 3 decades and every year has at least 2 cars each

Surprisingly I've already got a bit of an update because it's been a pretty productive weekend.

The Twingo has seen a remaster, I didn't mind the old model but the new one is next level!

Thanks for your continued support, lots of work on the backend this week on stats, events and etc. Plan is to have a playable demo race shortly so you can see the first actual footage of Beige in action!

Absolutely awesome models and reworks!! Looking forward to the demo!

Wait, I didn't read the playable part, so I can actually play it. Hell yeah.

I'd think it's just a video. Where could we get said demo? :) Can't wait for Beige Edition Prologue.
