Umm... no. Content is a singular referring to a whole, while contents is a plural referring to individual items. They're different terms with different uses, and "list of contents" is correct.


As I noted in the article, plurals are tricky in Japanese. That's because... they... aren't there.

Japanese uses "counters" which refer to a type of object and then literally counts the items. We would say "one pen, two pens", they would say "one [long/cylindrical objects] pen, two [long/cylindrical objects] pen" (ippon pen, nippon pen; -pon [and bon and hon] is the counter for long/cylindrical objects) - "pen" remains singular.

I don't know what the counter for appudeeto (update) is*, but there's not one in the Japanese text, so I'm assuming it's singular throughout.

What Kaz is trying to say with "big updates" is that this will be a Grand update.

Before anyone gets excited: this is from the man that said: we like to think of GT7 to be the most complete Gran Turismo ever.
He may think that VR2 and 4 cars is a big updates.

As for the Citroen DS, it's a cool car, for what it is. Yet, it's nowhere near the top priorities to be added, specially in such a small update.




As many people who ask for the Lexus LFA? Numerous people ask for multiple things. It's still just one old F1 car between a trillion other specific (F1) models people asked for over the time. It's not like this Honda was the only one to ever be asked for.

The DS will be interesting to see hows it runs in the game, as in the real world there is no other car like it, It drives so smooth. like on air, will this be apparent ? I hope so - it also has a rally pedigree, again its suspension will seem original to any other on off road tracks - you should have quite a bouncy effect you can toy with (hopefully)

The early F1 car will on its own i believe, open up an avenue for new events & custom racing championships etc as I remember the old TOCA touring car games from years back had Lotus 47 I think / open wheel racing - I'm looking forward to see how all the moving suspension looks in the replays/videos - a full grid of these would look good, especially if you can mix up the liveries

Well, even if we don't get it this time it will be coming at some point during the game's lifecycle anyway. A full fledged GT without Grand Valley is not a true GT!
 
Considering GT7 was the first game in 8 years to include an OG fictional track, it would be a shame to stop at the 3 we have now (especially with how amazing Trial Mountain looks).

Let's hope that the hydropneumatic suspensions will feel great with the direct drive. My dad used to drive a DS19 and it felt like riding a boat 😁 Super smooth driving!

Had to quote this because people do get lost on the translations... Plural doesn't exist in japanese folks.

Kaz could just be talking about this update (1.29 as a whole), but the translator decided to put it in plural, which while not technically incorrect, can lead to confusion.

Also, it's APPUDEETO, katakana mate. (jking).

I'd say that つ is the common counter here, but maybe that many Japanese would use 個(こ) as well. They sometimes have problem with counters too, especially with that kind of foreign words for non physical items. It might depend on the sentence as well. アップデートが2つあります seems the most correct, but for a question or for undetermined number, こ might fit as well. Ex: アップデートは何個ありますか。seems natural to me, even if アップデートは
いくつありますか。 is a more correct sentence.

As Grimm6Jack says it's tricky and the Japanese sentence by itself doesn't indicate multiple updates. Indeed there's no plural for words in Japanese, but there are many ways to express plural and he didn't use them. He did in the English translation though, so either his English is good enough and it was intended, either it's a translation mistake.

I think they'll just give it a generic soft suspension setup and call it a day.

All well and good, VGT aside, but where are my TCR cars? What about my LMP2? Not even an LMP3. Do you realise how many races you could create? What about at least one car to go with the GR010? No? Okay what about some tracks then? I suppose we'll find out during the sport event.

We'll see, maybe they won't bother to make totally different suspension physics just for one car indeed... But I had a quite similar feeling as when riding a DS while using some cars like the 8C 2900B with my DD pro.

Oh man, I go to all the trouble of learning the "right" counters and they just slap tsu onto every bloody thing.

I did two years of Japanese at university, 25 years ago (from a very lovely teacher called, of course, Keiko). Even got a reserve spot on JET. Can't remember 98% of it, but I can still ask for coffee and beer, so I'm good.

Ahah! 😁 I feel you, especially when learning all those counters was quite difficult in the first place!

Japanese teachers are the best, especially female teachers. Not being a jerk, but they almost all have really entertaining way to teach and it made the study of Japanese a lot of fun for me. First time in my life I thoroughly enjoyed scool! If only I had teachers like that back when I was a kid, I assume I had way better results and probably made long studies.

I had one male teacher and it wasn't the same at all, and almost all teachers and students disliked him, even if I guess it's not representative (when one of my teacher's dad passed away and she took 3 days off to go to the funerals in her hometown, the guy was almost angry at her for the increase of workload, and told her to come back quick and to finish all the homework check by then... 😕).

Don't wanna derail the thread too much but my best Japanese teacher in 4 years of college was an older non-native American guy who lived overseas a bunch, he was actually the head of the department. The native speakers were great also but he really focused on grammar structural differences in a way that really made it click for me, guess because he had an IT / computer science background too so the explanations were really in line with my major in com sci :). Being able to be lazy and use つ for everything is a nice foreigner superpower, but I liked learning the counters anyways.

Anyways, my guess is that the plural in English may be just due to it could be "multiple" updates in the sense that 1.28 was skipped, maybe due to issues in the build that prevented the launch (since the whole QA approval process at Sony does take a decent bit of time) so it was subsequently fixed in 1.29. wouldn't be surprised personally if the cars were planned for Jan and Feb's focus would be the VR update primarily, but guess we'll find out what all is coming up in only a few days. Personally I just want a WTC 700 event at Bathurst, I really wanna spend more time on that track but all the events currently are kinda meh. Feel like I've done a lot more 600/800 races than the current 700 series, would be a great track for it imo.

I understand what you're saying, but using つ isn't some lazy foreigner thing here. It's the appropriate way to count most of those unsubstantial things.

I'm actually looking forward to the update. Already find the game fun, especially Custom Race mode. Will be especially interested when the full patch notes are out, as they might add some new/returning lobby features or other things.

Not expecting anything outside of what's been confirmed obviously, but there's potential for a surprize or two.

Wow, was almost complete guess on my behalf that! I vaguely recall it's used for electronic files, so that's what I went with :lol:

Maybe there's hope for me yet. I'll dig out my old coursework and my copies of "Japanese for Busy People" :D
