It's time for everyone's favourite type of post: A research post! (crickets)

I've looked at every real life race car that PD have added in GT7 (both base game and DLC additions, if it wasn't in Sport it's fair game). What's incredibly clear is that PD definitely have a focus when they add these. If a car didn't win a championship, win an important race, or is incredibly historically significant in real life, they probably aren't adding it - they definitely aren't filling out grids with backmarker cars for the sake of completing the grid of a year.

Alfa 155 won 1993 DTM
Audi RS5 won 2019 DTM
Honda NSX GT500 won 2000 JGTC
McLaren MP4/4 won 1988 F1
Mercedes W196 won 1955 F1
Nissan GT-R GT500 won 1999 JGTC
Peugeot 205 Group B won 1986 WRC
Subaru BRZ GT300 won 2021 GT300
Super Formulas won Super Formula (I admit this is a tautology)
Toyota GR010 won WEC a bunch
Toyota Supra GT500 won 1997 Super GT

Audi R8 LMS Evo won many GT3 races
Ford GT GTE won 24 Hours of Daytona
Honda RA272 won Japan's first F1 race
Mercedes AMG GT3 Evo won many GT3 races
Mercedes W194 won 1952 Le Mans
Porsche 917K won 1970 24 Hours of Daytona
Porsche Carrera GTS won Targa Florio and won class in Le Mans
Suzuki Escudo won Pikes Peak
VW ID.R set a bunch of records including Pikes Peak and Nordschleife

First of all, we separate out the '50s Maserati and the '18 GT-R GT3 - these got in via Pebble Beach and the movie respectively, they were guaranteed entry.

Of the rest:

Alpine A220
Longtail McLaren F1
Chaparral 2J - historically significant for development of the fan car
Nissan Skyline Super Silhouette - is the iconic car for its series despite not winning
Porsche Spyder
Subaru Impreza Rally Car
Toyota Celica Rally Car - historically significant for turbo controversy
Toyota GT-One - massively significant in Japanese race car history

So there's only 4 that aren't champions or obviously important cars for other reasons. And I know some of you will say the longtail and Impreza are above that "notoriety" line too. Either way, there's clearly a direction behind what race cars they are adding.

I feel like the BMW Mclaren F1 GTR is purely there as part of what I tend to refer to as the "BMW Motorsport Starter pack". Notice that many racing games that aren't officially licensed has some combination of the following cars:

  • BMW M3 GTR (2001)
  • BMW M3 GT2 (2010-2011)
  • Mclaren F1 GTR (BMW Motorsport 1997)
  • BMW V12 LMR

If you particularly notice with multiple games from the early 2000s to the late 2010s (Alongside the THEN new BMW M6 GT3), there almost always was a trio that featured one of the 2 M3 GTs alongside the F1 GTR Longtail and the V12 LMR.

Speaking of which, is the M3 (E92) GT a typo in GTS/GT7 when it's actually meant to be the M3 GT2, or was it really called just the M3 GT despite being used specifically in GT2 racing?

M3 GT is correct, it's what BMW called the car.

It was what it was referred to when it competed at the 2011 Nurburgring 24 Hour in what was then called SP9-X class (I think?).

Here were also my likeliest guesses for the content of the next update.

-I don't foresee the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N being featured in any other event than the WTC 600, so I bet there'll be a new round of that. In fact, it seems like there are a mere seven rounds of this event, with two at different layouts of Tokyo Expressway. The only other guess I had was a new Clubman Cup Plus event, but I don't think that event has the little pre-race dialogues.

-I had wondered why there wasn't an even for the F1500T-A, but now that we're getting the F3500-A, I would be highly surprised if we don't get a new Bonus Menu featuring the latter at various GP venues like Brands Hatch, Fuji, and/or Spa-Francorchamps.

-I'm entirely unsure of what other car(s) could be coming alongside those two, but I wonder if they'll have any influence on what sort of Extra Menu(s) we get? That said, I think it's been a while since we last got an Extra Menu that also featured a car that we got in the same update. Personally, I'm still holding out on potential Extra Menus featuring various designers or design houses, like Giorgetto Giugiaro, Frank Stephenson, or Pininfarina.

-At least one new mission set would be highly-appreciated as well, if only because the currently-final drag race mission implies there are more like it to come. I also imagine this is where we could see more endurance races, though there's still the one hour race of WTC 800 race at Spa-Francorchamps that's within World Circuits, plus at least two half-hour races, at Road Atlanta and Le Mans.

-Speaking of that half-hour race at Road Atlanta, I wonder if they'll ever retcon the Gr.1 Prototype Series ruleset to actually being limited to Gr.1 cars? We've seen something like this before, too, with the most notable example that I can recall being how the GT-R Cup didn't initially permit the first two GT-R models.

-Naturally, at least one new quintet of engine swaps will be coming, but I don't see the Ioniq 5 N nor F3500-A being involved in them. Plus with some cars getting a second swap option, who knows what swaps could become possible? (Here's hoping some engines that only have a single option, like the ones from the Corvette C6 ZR1 and Aventador SV, will get more!)

-No doubt we'll get more scapes, too, but where could they end up being this time? I'd especially love to see Mystic, CT. Or maybe the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance, haha!

The F1 GTR I think was added to give the CLK-LM a rival so to speak, as the F1 GTR and CLK LM/GTR rivalry is legendary similar to the C5-R and GTS/R rivalry. Even though it didn't win it was the class winner for GT1 in Le Mans 1997, though the one that won was the Gulf Davidoff livered one. The BMW one was probably added due to being the most known of the Longtail GTRs + it was previously introduced in GT4. I can't really say it was easier to scan since both 95R and the regular F1 are at McLarens HQ which leads me to believe the reason they added the BMW one was pretty clear. Though I really wish they added the Longtail HDK as a second bumper and tail option as it looks pretty rad.

For what it's worth, with this exercise in mind I think the V12 LMR is very likely to eventually show up. It fits all the criteria - it's a Le Mans winner, from a time period PD like, from a manufacturer they have a decent relationship with, and it's not impossible to license (it's in FM). The three cars that fit the modus operandi IMO are that, an Audi R8 LMP, and one of the Mäkinen championship Lancer rally cars. Those fit right in with what they've been adding.

I can easily see them setting up a set of races on these five tracks:

Suzuka Circuit
Nurburgring

Special Stage Route X
Laguna Seca
Apricot Hill Raceway
Bolded = Bonus Menu Races

Of course that would mean that Apricot Hill Raceway would have to be the track featured in the next update but given that its already had ITS major makeover in the PS3 era like High Speed Ring did, it wouldn't have quite alot of change to it.
-I'm entirely unsure of what other car(s) could be coming alongside those two, but I wonder if they'll have any influence on what sort of Extra Menu(s) we get? I could see one happening for Toyota's Prototypes with the roughly decade gap between the GT-One, TS030 and the GR010.
Of course there COULD also be one for BMW Motorsport if they decide in include this:

Seeing as one's a Electric car and one is a Open Wheel car, I feel very confident in saying neither will have an engine swap.

Don't forget the Super Taikyu Mazda 3. It's significant in Mazda research using alternative fuels. No doubt also being a partner with PD.

I mean yeah, I would be absolutely into it, something like this map could be very, a small batch of Tokio for example. If they put their resources just into this for the next title by handcrafting it and wouldn’t be any other new tracks on launch, just the ones we have right now in GT7, I would’ve ok with that.
The question would be how would that look like? Would there be pedestrians, traffic, fuel stations, challenges and events?
It’s just hard for me to imagine that PD would do something like this, but there’s always a first time for everyone.
I honestly don't want for the open world stuff to cause the track racing stuff to be neglected in any form in favor of it.

I just want a place where cars can be enjoyed and driven without it being about track or racing, just cruisin'. Also making use of the game's everyday cars as traffics.

Like, events (if it's a track event) should be simply done by driving to the events building that's present on the map menu to select all races like usual.

Though above is just a bare minimum of what I expect/want, dunno if there's something compelling that can be added there.

Yeah though likely not all completing the grid of a racecar category to some extent is important. The game still didn't do this for all racecars though.

Good point, I'd forgotten the Mazda3 Gr.4 was based on this, add it to the list.

The popular choice for returning car I'd say this trends the most badly for is the Minolta, by the way. That car did absolutely nothing of note in real life, worse than anything they've added in the last four years+ has. So don't hold too much hope for that one showing back up soon...

Is there a way to shuffle music during racing? I keep hearing Masahiro Ando, Nittoku Inoue and Daiki Kasho but nothing else even though I set other music to play after a while due to the selection getting stuck in my head. I set the whole selection to play but I wonder if my game's... bugged? Maybe?
Quite a few races in the game are hardcoded to only ever play specific songs from the playlist. I distinctly remember some of the WTC 900 races only ever playing Nittoku Inoue's Invincible... on endless repeat.

I was happy to see E36 M3 in used car dealer but something was off after few runs.

I noticed car steering itself at some points on track mainly hitting horizons or holes at nurburgring. I searched for cause at forum and found out about suspension glitch or “car is too low”. I tried raising the height even switched back to stock but problem still presist 😕

Am I doing something wrong? Is it something i can fix even more? Is PD even aware of this or it should behave like this? It’s strange that this is only car that does this for me right now 🙁

Kinda late to this party but... yeah. While I, like many others, have issues and complaints about the game, it still keeps me coming back a lot.

This video should offer a pretty comprehensive explanation of how to resolve the E36's suspension issues.

Hmmm, why the skyline super silhouette over the Porsche 935 or Zakspeed Capri? I think you can find some meaning behind any car. Like “that time Ford beat Porsche” or “That time Porsche claimed 1979 LeMans”.

What’s your thoughts on the Group C cars? Why is that class fairly well rounded out but we have zero group 5 cars to go with the Super silhouette?

There are some very iconic can am cars. Heck the entire can am series is littered with interesting cars. We have one. The 2J. But at least they have 4-5 BRZ’s and GR86’s.

I feel like I wouldn’t be bitter about it if we had like two other cars to go with these lone rangers if you will. I know we can tune and this car can match up with this one. But look at the group C’s, slap on BoP and enjoy the race for the most part. To me GT7 would be so much better if there were more classes like that. We’ve got all the Gr.3 and the Group C. Then it begins to thin out and we’re left tuning to match up cars ourselves or even pretend one car is another car not in the game. How many people have painted up the Honda RA272 as a lotus?

4-5 cars per class or group would be perfect. Another, we’ve got the 917k, where’s the Ferrari? Too many lone rangers.

I agree with most of your post, but the Group C cars fit the pattern completely - they are 4 Le Mans winning cars (albeit the wrong year for the Porsche) and the R92CP, which won the Japanese sports car championship and is a strong nostalgia car for GT.

We've got the Red Pig(it won its class in the Spa 24H and finished second overall), but everything else that car (kind of)raced with, in the game, are road cars.

We have to build the Group 5 CSL. We have to build the Group 5 Ferrari 512BB and Pantera. PD are saving time and money by just having us do the work with adding parts and creating liveries.
Especially with Group A.

PD even turn the road cars into racing versions themselves, as seen in the DTM & JGTC special events that appear in Weekly Challenges. That's definitely an indication of their intent.

To me it makes sense to do that for race cars that by regulation had to be a lot closer to the road version, or use the road version as a base.
It's a more involved/authentic process having to build a race car from a road car starting point, in a similar way to how it would've been done at the time.
I just wish that PD added a Racing Fuel Tank upgrade.

Meanwhile stuff like the Alfa Romeo 155, Honda NSX JGTC etc were purpose-built race cars that are more removed from their road-going counterparts, so it makes sense that they get their actual racing versions in the game, rather than attempting to build them out of a road car.

No doubt. PD could still surprise us with a Porsche GT1 race car, TS-020 Road Cars and CLK Road car. Seeing we have an F1 road car and two racing versions. However, that becomes borderline wishful thinking.

Anywho, GT7 seems to be halfway complete.:sly: We'll just see what's coming in the future months. ;)

I have a suspicion that we haven't seen any FIA GT1 special events yet because PD are waiting until they add something to "complete the set."

That's what happened when they added the NSX JGTC. Almost immediately after that, the first JGTC special event showed up.

I think the most likely GT1 category addition is indeed the racing version of the Porsche 911 GT1 we already have in the game.
The other car that comes to mind is the Nissan R390 GT1. Even though the racing version has been in the franchise before, I think it's less likely than the Porsche.
The Panoz Esperante GTR-1 would be a long-shot. Even an Audi R8C probably has a higher chance than a Panoz return.

The "complete the set" special events theory could also mean we're not going to get any new Group C, JGTC or classic DTM cars, at least for the foreseeable future. Some notable cars that would include are:
Audi V8 Quattro (DTM)
Toyota 88C-V or TS010 (Group C)
Peugeot 905 (Group C)

All of this is hypothetical of course.

Well again, we have the gt40 and the p4, but technically the wrong gt40. I agree with you, I always thought why aren’t a lot of these cars classed together? They must be choosing the cars based on some significance rather than trying to make a well rounded class.

I noticed this too last night. Built a super touring replica and it went straight into the barrier at Brands Hatch...

But then the car still have a stock interior. Not a big deal if you use exterior views, but for cockpit users it's not ideal.

Speaking of which, maybe they'll update the Gr.4 GR Supra with a proper racing cockpit, not unlike how they recently added a formal cockpit to the AMG VGT. Otherwise, I do wonder if it'd be necessary for PD to add the formal racing versions of various road cars we've seen dressed up as their racing versions, like the Ferrari F40 for the JGTC events. Personally, I'd at least like to see the racing version of the Mercedes-Benz 190 E Evo II, if only because it could end up being the sole Gr.4 car for Mercedes-Benz rather than being an alternative to the SLS-AMG Gr.4.

I'd be down for a "Gr.1V" and a "Gr.3V" for classic prototypes and classic GT racers, respectively. Similarly, we definitely need a Ford GT Mk. II racecar.

With R390 GT1 Race Car and 1998 911 GT1 Race Car I could die a happy man 🙏
