Only two partners I've seen exit are Fanatec (who also didn't renew their sponsorship with the SRO as well so that seems more like a specific company decision) and Michelin. Not sure what was behind this particar stoppage of a series but if the F1 stuff is anything to go-by, eSports ain't done just yet

Fanatec are still there but I wonder if that is just because their original deal lasted for so many years and hasn't ended yet, it's no secret that their finances are/were a mess and they were spending well beyond their means on marketing. Ironically they're the only one which makes sense given they're advertising sim racing hardware to sim racers.

Mazda and Brembo are official GTWS partners (along with TGR still), Genesis isn't.

This is interesting to watch play out, it feels like the culmination of the issue we've often talked about where PD try to spin both the classic content plate and the Sport Mode plate and end up kind of ineffectual at both.

If I were PD, I think I'd see the writing on the wall, pivot away from Sport Mode, and re-tool GT8's online offerings to be more based around the whole car roster at the expense of the GTWS. But I could also see them desperately trying to hold on to streamers and top-tier players who they worry won't play non-race car content.

When GT7 first came out and both Daily Race offerings were in tuned road cars with power limits, I genuinely thought that was the direction this game would take throughout its entire lifecycle. Instead they hard-pivoted back to mind-numbingly boring group races in under a month.

It's not surprising why - those races always manage to pull in the highest player counts - but my Lord, do they get tiring quickly.
 
Guys, that’s just how business works. End of partnership and they try to build new ones. Always been like this. End of a cycle and the beginning of a new hopefully a good one.

Gran Turismo is a strong franchise but Motorsport and car business is an expensive one and not an healthy one. Let’s see what happens next. For sure it feels this like a transition year for GTWS. And for sure it’s not clear anymore what’s next and what’s the scope for the esports for gran turismo. It feels like something hold them. So or they go all in like they were doing with GTSport or they decide to step back…


Ps: i forgot to say something: and maybe the model built for GT7 is not sustainable on the economic side. 3 years that the game is out and they earn money just from the copies sold and i think a really small % from the useless micro transactions. So they probably need to rethink and rework everything if they want to try to monetise and re invest in an healthy way the money…

Is it possible that there's a point where a racing game reaches a maximum limit of real world circuits due to licensing costs? At least outside of a paid DLC model.
Because it's kinda been feeling like GT7 is at such a point.
There's a general lack of new circuits, but also the last 3 added have all been fictional, so they don't cost anything to license.
Maybe some of the existing real world circuit roster won't be carried over to the next game, to make room in the budget for licensing new ones, though I hope that's not the situation Polyphony are in.

It seems the fad of eSports is coming to an end with partners pulling out of GTWS and now this, I assume nobody is seeing an adequate return on their investments.

This, unfortunately the pandemic created a bubble around esports (specially in Sim racing), but also we need to add that the last couple of years have been challenging for the automotive industry from an economic perspective, and all the topic around tariffs lately is not helping the companies, so they are looking how to save resources

Indeed, I think that's what's holding the championship system back: it seems that as it stands, every online competition involves an in-person event with real prizes on the line.

In think the livery editor works a little differently in GT7 than GT Sport because it's now part of GT Auto. I think an offline livery editor should be added at some point like how it's done in the Forza games.

I think one of the biggest missed opportunities of this game was giving up on PP and power-weight races so quickly. We have 500+ cars and all we really get to race is the same 10-15 good Gr.3 cars and maybe 10-15 others over and over and over and over and over and over again?

I really agree with this one too, I've floated the idea of a tuner cup a couple times. There just isn't enough to do right now.

Seriously, and it doesn't help that more or less 99% of Daily Races that feature a given category such as Gr.3 seem to include every car in that group, rather than specialized selections. A really good example of that would be how on rare occasions, there'll be Gr.1 events that only let you use the Group C racers within that category. I got other games I wanna play anyway, so I very well may move onto something else after the Nations Cup concludes in mid-May.

I think the GT World Series is a waste of time and money now. I was surprised to see it continue after the FIA partnership ended and I believe it's only a matter of time before it's canned. Hardly anybody watches it and the people that compete in it are not enjoying it. No point pressing on with something that doesn't work.

What makes you think hardly anybody watches it?
 
There are only 2 reasons why I personally watch the live event stuff:
  • The in-game rewards for doing so.
  • The rare opportunity to hear more about the future of the game, and potentially showcased content (e.g. new car, track or feature debut).
The competition itself I'm not interested in, but it could be worse. At least it's not full of cringe eSport cliques/teams, or has the heightened controversy & toxicity that comes when prize money gets involved.

I do think it could be more interesting if PD fully leaned into what makes GT relatively unique compared to say, Assetto Corsa. For example, the sheer diversity of the cars in Gr.1 - as well as the fact that many real-world LMDh/LMH racers would likely end up there if added to GT - would make it a really cool addition to the Manufacturers Cup. Honestly, I'd love to see the generally neat car selections of last year's TGR Cup be part of the Nations Cup, especially since the former has seemingly concluded. Like how there was that round of the TGR Cup that featured Gr.3 racers from Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, and Honda.

Funny you mentioned Porsche because there was a Porsche-themed event back in GT Sport:

But now, they seem to move to either iRacing or Raceroom. But I hope in Toyota’s case, the regional versions of the GT Cup could remain in one form or the other.

Youtube views are very low for such an event with promotion by the organizer. Regular updates videos get more views (and the numbers are not impressive either). So that's an indication that those events do not attract a big crowd.
 
I actually enjoy watching them, especially with the ”predict the winner” thing, makes me a bit more invested. And the events are generally well executed. This is the only e-sport I follow.

Point I made was just because he and his folks didn't watch doesn't equal "Nobody cares". It smacks of being confidently (and perhaps intentionally) ignorant to respond to someone about hard numbers with "Well I don't watch it and neither does anyone I know" as if THAT's representative of the overall view count.

I do enjoy the world series streams. Think they can be quite fun watching to.

But i would rather have pd focus more on the single player stuff and other areas to improve the experince. But i think gt7 is at its very end soon. So i dont expect anything major until gt8. The updates dosent bring much to the table either. Very few perfomence cars. No good single player content. No tracks.
But sophy ai in custom races was a very welcome suprice.

I am still intrested on what response pd and Sony will have this month given fh5 releases on ps5

I got an '06 Viper as my birthday gift when I logged on yesterday and well, it seems a bit rubbish offering cars that can be bought for less than 1m credits, but they can give away 2m credits for a single decent lap of Daytona on the online trial.
