Nah it doesnt work the same as Xbox live at all - i cant even remember even if it does show you what they are playing! Maybe someone else can tell us on this one - i very rarely use my PS3 online (resistance is amazing) and the only friends i've got was ebiggs pzf and duckracer off of gtplanet!

and the reason i rarely use it is because i dont like the PSN much, as Live makes everything clear and simple - as you say the little arrow next to your friends shows you can join the game!

Because this is a Gran Turismo forum, I'm sure that a majority of people here own PS3s over Xbox 360s, despite the Xbox currently being ahead in total sales.

The reason I bought a Xbox 360 was because I heard that GTA4 was no longer going to be a PS3 exclusive, so I made up my mind then to go ahead and buy a 360 instead of waiting for a few months for the more expensive PS3.

Anyone have experience with getting a bricked 360 repaired? Mine's been sitting dead beside my TV for weeks now and I've just realised that it's getting close to the GTA4 release date! I've also discovered that it had an 18 month warranty, not 12 months, so it's still covered. Any chance of getting it out and back before GTA4 is out if I phone Microsoft tomorrow?

Depends on Microsoft and how busy they are. When my 360 died on me, it was two week turn around, very happy, expected it to be like a month. Just start the repair process, buy GTA4 on the 29th and hope for the best.

I own an Xbox 360... and nor do I own the PS3. I think it's more of a price thing.

Well, here's hoping... I'm gonna phone them in the morning. Do they arrange for a courier to pick it up for you or do you have to pack it up and send it off yourself? I worked for a PC manufacturer that would arrange a date for the PC to be picked up by a courier company and returned to us and also a courier company to send it back out when repaired.

I don't want to have to pay for anything ideally because it's still under warranty.

I feel like i'm the only one that has not had a problem with my 360. That or i'm just last in line for mine to die. (Watch it die the day before the 29th, :scared: )

Some new info.
BUT, it does contain Spoilers! Read at your own will.

Scans: You can find them here.

Note 1: I think that the "America's next top hooker" is new, not sure, is too messy with gfx around and with the flash right into it. Anyway if you want to see it, take, crop it, whatever, it's there.

Note 2: Their preview have some spelling mistakes, stuff like "Mafia Ray", and you can't read well the name of the mission 'Jacob's Ladoe', so I'm not it's that or if they got it wrong. Either way, I'll try to confirm it.

Note 3: There's a lot of spoilers, especially mission bits. You're warned.

Note 4: I was taking the info from the magazine and translating it to another document at the same time, so
it may have a few spelling mistakes. Let me know if you find any.

Bits of info:
  • "It's not the eight wonder, but what you see in the trailer.. it's the game."
  • R. Kelly - Bump And Grind it's on the R&B station.
  • They mention some bugs in the aiming system. For example, the Niko was uncapable of finding some near targers with the rifle, going straight to some other far ahead.
  • They played on the arcades at Homebrew cafe, a 3d tetris.
  • The Cellphone has, by this order, Contacts, Messages, Reminders(?), Music, Photos and Multiplayer.
  • Niko had 20 contacts on his cellphone, they're able to see 9 of them.
  • Do you know when you hit a fire hydrant on San Andreas and all the water comes out? Well they were driving a Mr. Whoopee and went right into one, so they decided to try it, Niko went flying and felled nearby.
  • When you're about to die, the screens fills up with blood splatter and it turns to black and white.
  • With the SMS system you can keep your relationships with your buddies, keep up date about the missions and if you fail a mission just send a "retry" SMS and you're good to go again.
  • They were able to play four missions: 'To Live And Die in Alderney'(second part of 'Truck Hustle'), 'Jamaican Heat', 'Jacob's Ladoe' and 'Harbouring A Grudge'.
Unique moment:
(They had a few but I think this one is worth reading, in case someone needs/want to rest to post on a website let me know)

We're standing near the docks in Algonquin, anxious to test the hand-to-hand combat, and we spot
a bad looking biker. Obviously with went to the guy( you can walk among the crowd like in
Assassin's Creed) and he backed off a little. We trough some punches at each other, he backs off
again and takes out a knife, then like 10 greasemonkey bikers surround us. Brave like a lion we
run the hell of out there, we got in to a tunnel and we found a officer on the other end.
"Looks like good news" says the R* guy with them- and he's right.
The officer takes his gun and aims it at the biker, because what he sees is a guy with a knife
chasing a innocent. With out a warning, bang, the biker drops dead. "I wasn't expecting that"
says the R* member surprised. They continued running while the people around were gathering
at the scene.

Missions:

'To Live And Die in Alderney'

In this mission you are involved with the mafia, Ray and Phil Bell. Niko asks Phil to help him find
"the special someone", which Phil agrees, but, Niko has to transfer some drugs from the last mission first.
We take Phil to a mansion- Salvatore Leone kind of house- surrounded by fields. The drugs are placed
in two mobster cars, on the way out, the police arrives at the scene. Now he have to escape to a safe
location, and, avoid that our friend in the second car get arrested. A huge pursuit explodes with the LCPD
using blockades and other pursuit techniques along the way. When we arrive at the scene we need to put the
drugs in some bags- some memories from Heat came to mind. When we were getting prepared to get out with
a van, a police helicopter appears- but it's quickly taken down with a RPG hit, a quick dive into the water on way
to safety and the mission is complete.

'Jamaican Heat'

On this mission you meet Little Jacob, the weapons dealer addicted to weed - and it serves the propose of
testing the new cover and shooting system. We need to cover him from a roof near the place, jacob his doing
a "transaction" while we stay low. Obviously the deal goes wrong, we grab one of the gangsters with the
L2 button, splinter cell style, and we take him down punching him with the weapon instead of firing it.
Another gangster appears from a door on our left and we decided to test the auto aim, after that we took
Jacob to a safe place ad the mission is complete.

'Jacob's Ladoe'

Niko knocks on Jacob's door and finds him whispering stuff, he's stoned.
While we drive, Jacob briefs us on the next mission, quite a usual technique on the new missions. We leave
Jacob and we're told do wait for him on the street. It goes wrong, again. We need to take a few more
gangsters down, we run some over with Jacob's car and proceed to the gansgta HQ. It's a tutorial on the cover
system, we press the cover key and Niko finds the closest object and goes there, if we keep pressing it, Niko will
change from object to object, we can even run, using the X button and using R1 to slow Niko down and find some cover.

We stay near the door and walk to the window, Niko goes down and hides beneath it, using R2 without lock-on, we blind-fire the hell of the house and take one down. Niko enters the house and start killing the survivors, we end covering behind the couch, we use the shotgun and finish the last guy. One of the walls took some much hits it ended collapsing. We shoot some more bullets on the guy and took the medic kit on the table, with the house "clean" we drop Jacob at the Homebrew cafe.

'Harbouring A Grudge'

In this mission we meet Packie on his house, along with a interesting talk with his grandfather(?) and his sister, which gave Niko a suspicious/romantic kinda look. Packie briefs us on the mission(they failed three times and every time Packie told a different version) and Niko has to call a cab, when they arrived at the harbor they pay the guy $39(the double if you want to skip the trip) and proceed into some warehouse, that's locked. They climb into the roof while they watch a gangster loading illegal products(like Prozac), (guess what... yes you need to steal them). After a short cut scene we're free to proceed as we like. Fortunately our R* guy gave us loads of guns, so we use a rifle to cut to the chase. A big shoot out begins and after the way is clear Packie arrives and we took all the drugs into a Binco van.
(They failed the mission, but if you succeed, taking the van into a safe place, you will meet Ray)

Cheers McLaren - excellent info and nice find!!

What happened to the 'qaulity posts' system - i was going to give you plus rep!

Microsoft extended the warranties to three years on all consoles as they were having so many problems. Get it sent in asap.

Hells yeah! 👍

Xbox 360-buyer here.

It went away due to misuse. :indiff:

Sounds good. 👍

And speaking of clans, if you look on GTAForums you can see folks really taking this multiplayer far, claiming boroughs as their own.

Ha ha - imagine you could enter a room which was like Test Drive - where everyone on the same server as you is running about!

The only time they will be able to claim boroughs is in the 'Turf Wars' game

This could turn into REAL gang warfare!...

Maybe its a good idea to calm crime, just get all the bad people in NY to play this! :sly:

That's fighting talk right there. One member mentioned a "fight club". Each gang is represented by one member. Everyone goes to a derelict location, a circle is formed with cars and the two gang members fight to the death. Or until someone pulls out a molotov cocktail and sets everyone on fire.

I like the idea of a "Warriors" style battle. Each gang turns up and it's free for all from there.

Thats funny. I actually mentioned that car surrounding the area idea on the xbox.com forums because there was a fight club thread over there too. I also mentioned starting at the top of a building and fighting all the way down the stairs and the person that walks out the front door alive wins. Endless possibilities for the fight club ideas.

We're probably going to have two gangs, one for the PS3 members and one for 360. As you mentioned, the possibilities are endless. I also want to take full of advantage of the new game engine with some Jackass style antics.

Bad news for Australian members, there version is going to be cut due to the rating system. There is no confirmation on what features, but prostitution is likely to be axed.

ALSO: NO SPOILERS!

He's finished Grand Theft Auto IV!

We talk to Rob Taylor from Xbox World, the first games writer to complete GTA IV

With GTA IV due out on April 29 a few of our esteemed magazine friends in the GamesRadar network have been granted access to review the game already. That's right - one of the perks of being permanently slagged off on forums and two-bit blogs is that games writers get the opportunity to play games before they're in the shops.

The first of our colleagues to actaully finish the game is Rob Taylor, deputy editor of Xbox World 360 magazine, and below he tells us (as best he can) what it feels like to be the first person to finish GTA in the world. Lucky bastard.

You're the first games writer to have finished GTA IV, how does that feel?

Pretty darn sweet to be honest, I allowed myself a quick smug grin when the Rockstar guys told me! It's funny; I didn't actually really get to play as much as – say – the Benelux journos we met while up in Chelsea (we were based in Rockstar's actual offices and I think I racked up 25 hours at the final count, while they were ensconced in their hotel rooms playing up to 11 hours a day!) and I also had to write down some fairly comprehensive tips for the first batch of missions so actually I got off to a slow start.

On day two though, I flew through a major batch of the story missions without messing up once and then on the final day a Rockstar PR sidled up to me pretty late on while I was swearing my head off at getting stuck during a mission called 'A D*** B*** S**** C***' (edited to avoid spoiler) and said "Keep pushing on, you're actually nearly there. The missions are meant to be tough near the end!". It's true; the final couple of missions are rock, but after a couple of retries I finally made the breakthrough. And boy did I feel relieved; to have missed out that late on after all that, ahem... 'hard work' would have been hard to take.

How hard has it been to keep it all a secret?

Well, I've been threatened with physical violence more than a few times by mag colleagues after my constant stream of GTA enthusiasm threatened to get a bit too spoiler-intensive! Generally though, it'd be a shame to ruin the surprises for anyone else; GTA IV single player simply has to be played on your lonesome to be fully appreciate it for what it is: a true milestone in videogames. Likewise, my review in Xbox World 360 (out Wednesday 23rd April) talks more in general terms rather than getting into specifics... I can tell people why they have to buy this game, but I'd rather not tell them everything that transpires while doing so.

How did it all pan out then? Where did you play it?

So we got the call from Rockstar to come up on the March 26 and play for three straight days in a row – including a Saturday! We'd usually kick off at 9 or 10ish in the moring, play until 8 or 9 at night, then go eat, then crash before getting up the next morning and do it all over again. Sat in front of a 60" LCD screen in a dark room for nigh on 30 hours – now that's hardcore! Every GTA fan's dream though, huh?

How hard did you find it, playing it under so much pressure? Did you die a lot?

Definitely. It's funny, I actually had another colleague in the room with me, who also got real close to finishing. We were always comparing stats though, and I think I'd died 40-odd more times than he had by the end of the game. And failed, like, 50 missions! So I think in my rush to get through the game my skills let me down once or twice(!) The pressure to plough through as much as humanly possible did get irritating at times – especially when you get stuck on a certain mission – but you want to soak in as much atmosphere for your readers, cover as much ground as possible... all while taking over 4000 words worth of notes on a nearby laptop! It was the ultimate mix of fun and high pressure.

How different is the game from the others?

It's certainly tighter, both in terms of the way Liberty city is structured and the way in which the narrative feels more movie-like than before. Otherwise, everything feels as if it's been given the next-gen treatment; in particular the driving and shooting are light years ahead of past GTAs. Overall, it's a stratospheric leap forward, beyond anything I'd imagined.

Was the game everything you expected? Or are there some surprises?

That's a tricky question. It certainly exceeded my expectations, while there are so many small, chucklesome Easter Egg-style surprises that you're constantly shaking your head at just how savvy a developer Rockstar really is – light years ahead of its contemporaries. Again though, it's hard to be specific without venturing into the spoiler region... sorry!

In terms of the time it takes to finish, how does it compare with others in the series?

That's a hard question to answer really. I finished the story mode in 24 hours, without skipping cut scenes, but I literally blitzed through and hardly took on any side missions. If I was to play it again (which I will be, right on launch day!) I'd say to wrap up the story will take at least 40 hours at a normal pace, plus another – say, 25? – to wrap up the remainder of the missions. In truth though, you could be paving the streets of Liberty City in a year's time and still not have discovered everything. Plus, if you're a 360 owner, there's the promise of downloadable content to come...My advice is: just kick back, take your time and breathe every fresh sight and sound in, don't simply rush through just to finish it before your mates. I wish I'd had that option!

How many "Woooaah, Jesus that's amazing!" moments did you have?

Without giving away any spoilers; lots! I think, overall though, it'll be three overall things that entrance GTA fans like never before. The City is one, with a lighting engine that has to be seen to be believed, plus the incredible dialogue and characterisation is genuinely Oscar-worthy and Niko Bellic is absolutely the most amazing protagonist in any game I've ever played. Finally, multiplayer of course!

Are the GTA fans going to happy with the new game, do you think?

Obviously, you can't make everyone happy all of the time but if any GTA fans aren't happy with IV, they need to take a good long look at themselves. Seriously though, this game is going to make a lot of people very happy.

Did you get a chance to play much multiplayer? Did you get your ass kicked by the Rockstar guys?

Yes, Xbox World 360 actually snagged a whole day playing against Rockstar PRs and devs in a exclusive feature a month or so back. Rather than simply go with the whole Deathmatch and Capture the Flag stuff, they've genuinely taken their time creating some amazing new modes that'll do the business online. Mafiya (a chaotic, mission based affair), Cops 'n' Crooks (one team try to capture the other) and Hangman's Noose (players team up to take an army of AI SWAT troops) were our personal faves...

If you had to pick a favourite out of all the games in the series now which one would it be?

GTA IV. By a country mile. It craps on all the others – even the mighty Vice City – from a height equivalent to the Statue of Happiness. Believe me, GTA IV is even better than the hype suggests!

I was on to them today. Has to be sent to Germany for repair. They said expect to wait 21 days from when it's collected, so if I phone UPS on Monday to arrange collection, it should be back in time for the release date.

That's not too bad. I think the response time is normally pretty good. I have my fingers crossed for you.

What about fight clubs on the roofs of buildings? That would be interesting. :trouble:

That should be good as the new physics allow the character to cling on to edges of buildings and railings. I can just imagine knocking someone off thinking there dead, then they come up behind me and drop kick me off the edge.

Any news about the soundtrack? I haven't been following news about the new game much, but I'm curious to know what kind of soundtrack it'll have.

It's a good idea but the reality is you can't control everyone and that molotov scenario would play out more than anyone would like probably. :indiff:

Don't know all the songs, but rappers R. Kelly & Common, both have songs in the game. Common's was made directly for the game, and will be released on his new album after the game's release.

Good work. I'll start a thread soon to see how muc interest we have.

I heard that DJ Green Lantern was also featured on the soundtrack.

That fight club idea sounds really awesome, but i think that would only work if there was a free-range mode in the multiplayer.

Do you mean free roam, as in no restrictions? If so, GTA4 has it alongside team deathmatch and other multiplayer games.

Do they have a gang function like Clans were in Halo 2? Rankings and such? Just wondering.
