Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."

Wait, the guy kills people, and thinks that in "New York" things will be different, yet these guys are mad?

I'm not sure, but if I guy thinks New York will help him stop killing, smuggling, and selling people, that might be a compliment. :p

But in seriousness, now.

"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland," said City Councilman Peter Vallone, chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee.
Safest city, my ass, even 6 years later.

In previous incarnations, players advanced through the game by killing cops,
I don't recall every mission requiring a cop's death.

selling pornography to children
That's funny since there have never been children in GTA.

and killing prostitutes. Details of the latest version have not been released.
Don't recall killing prostitutes that often either.

This is all just a bunch of mis-informed media morons.
They also call it a cop killing game. But these idiots don't seem to do any research at the fact that there are probably almost no missions that specify on killing police except for perhaps 1 or 2.

I notice they also don't bring up the pedestrians. It's always cops. No one seems to care if you mass murder a bunch of people in the game, but 1 cop dies, "OH NOES!!111!"

I hate these media reporters when they talk about GTA. They don't seem to understand that the player has total control of the game. You have the choice to kill or not kill in the game. It's that much of sandbox. Not to mention, they're A.I. They have no feelings.

Lastly, I find it funny that you can be a cop in games and just horrifically murder criminals. No one seems to complain about that.
New York has been in at least 3 Grand Theft Autos. Their chance to b*tch about the game depicting their city has been long gone.

Agreed.

The selling pornography to children part puzzled me the most, they just making this crap up to get maximum public support.

*EDIT* The article also says players get 'points' for killing cops? What points? You get a instant 2 star wanted level and thats all, not any bonus from it.

This good news for GTA.

GTA strives on this stuff!

The only problem is when the idiots in the legislatures try passing a bill to ban it.

I'm sending an email asking about selling the porn to kids and the other false stories.

GTA is one of my all time favourite game series..es due to it's open roaming style and cinematic storylines, not because i can shoot prostitutes.

Everyone i know who played/saw San Andreas said it was more like an interactive film than a game:

- How come so many films are around that depict worse violence and acts of cruelty than GTA?

- Is GTA considered worse because we have control over what happens?

The missions in GTA are scripted. The character does as they are told to do. So in effect the player is only performing the actions in the script. If the player's control over the character was removed from the missions and the computer controlled it, the outcome would be the same and the method of achieving the outcome would be similar. Therefore the player has little/no control over what happens in each mission and therefore the missions are more like watching a film than a game.

When you're not playing missions you are in full control. You can do whatever you like: kill people; have sex with prostitutes; steal cars etc. etc. This makes GTA look awful, surely... But if we are in full control, then aren't we at fault and not the game? In "free roam" you aren't encouraged to do anything wrong, it's the player that makes the decision.

It's a weak point, but seriously, if the game was sold in a state where it runs from beginning to end without player input it would be a film. Film storylines are ok. Film violence is ok. As soon as the player has to press some buttons to achieve the same storyline and the same violence it suddenly becomes wrong.

Am i the only one who thinks this?

Freakin' agreed.

I don't understand this. SA, the press jumped on it when Hot Coffee came around. Before then, there wasn't any press.

But now, now after 8 games, people are now complaining about violence? Amazing how it has turned from nudity to violence now.

GTA has been in the Australian press limelight when GTA III was released, it was even banned briefly because you could get your money back from a prostitute by killing her. Rockstar had to remove picking up prostitutes (I got the game before the revised version). What I find funny though is all GTA versions after GTA III is back to normal (not censored) and no one really worries about it here anymore.

there was a version of GTA sold without the hookers? dude thats like, what GTA is all about (not really but it's still important)

well if you listen good you will see that actually everybody says "its just a video game..." just that one police officer doesn't like it.
Some other person even said "its good publicity for the city":)

I love how they predict this game's content before it's out (though they're generally right).

But, what if this happened?

What if GTA IV's "Things will be different" meant that in the game, you actually do good deeds for everyone, and you can not kill anyone? Yes, that would be a sucky game and would never happen, but if it did, you can't imagine how stupid New York would look.

But I guess, in the end, the press will always report false info. At least this one did bring up children or prostitution in the game.

Yep, they were there, just couldn't pick them up. I bought my GTA III on release day and shortly after it was banned until Rockstar removed the prostitutes. My GTA III suddenly became valuable in Australia

Anyway all thats behind us now and all GTA's since have been unmodified (had better stay that way).

Yeah, most didn't mind at all.

Is there different trailers for this game? The one i downloaded has only still photos for the game, and doesn't show the main characters face, but does have the sentance at the end. I keep seeing people talk about the trailer as if it was moveing, and seeing the main character. I saw nothing, but pretty pictures. :(

*no this isn't a april fools joke*

Well the video you linked in your post worked great, when i downloaded the version from rockstar it did the same damn thing the other vid did, only slightly better(very slighty), a few seconds of stuff moveing before being still.
Wtf is up with this? Please don't say its my computer without a solution to fix this problem.:ouch:

Okay, so I just saw the trailer a few hours ago. The lighting looks absolutely awesome, but I was disappointed about the length and amount of content they showed. I was hoping for a little more.

Still, can’t wait for the game.

From what I remember, GTAIII, Vice City and San Andreas had already attracted plenty of press over their violent content, but it was the Hot Coffee that really set them off.

Which I think is hilarious. You can kill cops, blow up civilians, commit hit-and-run, fly around a city launching missiles at innocent people from an assault helicopter, etc., but a hidden sex scene in the game causes people to really blow their tops.

The game is clearly marked as being for over-18s. If people are worried about children and the sex and violence content of games, then maybe they should get off Rockstar's back and starting pointing the finger at shops that sell the game to minors and parents who allow their children to play video games that are clearly unsuitable for them.

And that idiot Jack Thompson is just doing a bang-up job marketing the game for Rockstar. The more controversy he makes and the louder he complains, the more free publicity the game gets and it'll sell like crazy.

KM.

i just watched the trailer again and now i wanna go back and play san andreas just for fun a bit. Too bad i sold my ps2 version...git my pc game somewhere here around..hmmm :D

GTAForums has gone down apparently.

But I like how they expresss it.

"If you can read this, the little hamster that powers this server is dead."

Thats one thing that just makes me mad. They, the parents, media, politicians, etc., continue to go and blame the game developer for making the game with stuff like what GTA has in it. Why should they be blaming them? I know why. Cuz its easier for them to blame them than anything else. Just like what KM said they should actually be blaming the stores that sell the games and the parents for not paying attention to what their kids are doing, buying and playing. I know of a young kid that under 14 that plays GTA and other games like that and he cusses so much he'd prolly make a sailor cry. He's also a bit violent at times too. His parents just don't seem to care. I bet he'll be in Juvenile Correction at least a few times by the time he hits 18. This still just angers the hell outta me that these people don't want to admit that the game developer isn't the problem, its the stores and parents. I know I'm prolly just saying the same thing KM or someone has said but I just felt like posting anyways. :) Its been so long since I last posted in the GTA forum.

Actually, you just named the only 3 types of people who care, the parents though being soccer moms.

But in reality, even New Yorkers couldn't care. Hell, I'll bet you 90% of X360 owners who reside in New York will buy the game just so they can explore their city in a different way.

Don't forget though, they also blame Rockstar because they think they can make more money sueing them than the parents or game stores.

Hit the nail on the head. 👍

See, perfect example again. However, my cousin played GTAIII when it came out, and he was about 12-13. Except for the fact his parents taught him the difference between a game and real life. Hell, my cousin can barely stand to see an animal die in a movie. I don't think GTA will be forcing him to be killing others any time soon. It's just a great way for him and me (I was probably 14-15 at the time, too) to relieve stress.

But it's thanks to these little brats who get the rest of us in their punishment. I can't believe these people have gotten so stupid, they can't realize the game is in the player's control. I mean, you would think they would know this since, apparently, they've found some secret mission where you sell porn to kids.

Agreed again. 👍 👍

Everyone should read this. Amazing what they've discovered here.

That's one thing I won't have a problem with in GTA: IV :p, if Rockstar made Liberty City very similar to Manhattan, then I should get around pretty easily around town. ;)

And btw *McLaren*, for the record, we, New Yorkers, do not care if idiots are thinking the game will promote bad reputation for NY, or if children will get a bad example out of it. This city is actually a little bit more, how can I say it?...active! and busy! to care about video game stuff. People will get upset? Sure! but it's not a major concern whatsoever. I bet some people from California or Nevada had their say about GTA:SA. It will always happen. DO NOT GENERALIZE ABOUT NEW YORKERS PLEASE.
If people rant about this game being taken place in NYC, then they DO NOT speak for everyone here, nor will they make us look stupid if GTA: IV happens to be a less violent game. Thank You. :)

Agreed *McLaren*. I have been playing GTA games since I was 11 or 12 (started with GTA2), and it hasn’t affected me. But some kids aren’t so grounded, and I think that’s when problems arise.

Ideally, kids shouldn’t be playing these games, and it’s up to the parents to a) stop their kids playing the game or b) teach their kids the difference.

Why are you on the defense?

I already said New Yorkers couldn't care.
Just calm down, jeez. You're spazzing out for nothing.

"Oldschool movie buffs will recognize the spoof reference in the GTA IV trailer straight away; the music is from Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi, a dialogue-less documentary film from the early eighties that mixed landscape footage with a rolling soundtrack. The music, in case your wondering, is a piece from minimalist composer Philip Glass, who created the music for Koyaanisqatsi. "

Yes, I remember now. The video alone should have given it away. I haven't seen that movie in years. Thanks. 👍

I wonder how Rockstar will handle the WTC location? Remember, GTAIII was modified after 9/11 happened so it wouldn't look like NYC. It wouldn't surprise me if Rockstar made their own version of the replacement buildings people have planned.

As I recall, the only thing Rockstar modified after 9/11 was Darkel and the police cars. LC was already set the way it was going to be.

I always wondered why they were black instead of blue, I also heard that some missions were changed or removed because of the attacks. I doubt this will affect gta4 though as its been several years and theres no reason to include ground sero anyways IMO. With all this dynamic shadow its going to be completely different standing in the midst of many tall buildings! thats one thing missing from any of the other GTAs downtowns.
