It was a Japanese press conference in the middle of the night for a western audience. TGS itself hasn't started, a 3-4 day event, at which there'll also be a dedicated GT Sport presentation. The biggest news was a GT Sport PS4 bundle for Japan/Asia as in Europe. Those alone guarantee the kind of retail presence only the major AAA releases of the year get. We're five weeks from release, there'll be a mountain of previews, marketing videos, pictures etc., before final release.
I think some get a distorted perspective of the relative size of franchises. A few dozen posts on the GTPlant forum or PCars 2 Twitter account doesn't really cross over into the mainstream. Codemasters F1 2017 had far larger pre-release marketing, but barely registered on launch week in the UK, despite favourable reviews. I'm getting it will be part of PSN's Deal of the Week before October is out.
Does the mainstream, casual gamer, care about live conferences? I doubt it. That's why it makes sense to show to the fans something imo. Because the fans are those who are talking about the game and have the potential to shift opinions.
Also, talking about pC2, there aren't only a dozen posts on GTP and a few tweets. There are dozens of good - excellent pC2 reviews from major gaming media outlets around the world 3 days away form launch. Also, PC2 videos and info has been popping out on a daily basis from players who got earlier access to the game. Plus worth of mouth.
I just pre-ordered PC2 C.E. If I had seen something relevant today morning, I could be thinking about GTS and talking about it instead. I was planing to buy PC2, standard version, on the 22nd. I didn't see anything relevant about GTS in the last weeks and I've been seeing and reading amazing stuff about PC2.
Of course PD and Sony think they'll sell millions of GTS copies (and they probably will). I'll be curious to see how will GTS compare to PC2 regarding MAU on Q1 and Q2 of 2018 though.
Also, Ian said he got some acquisition offers from asian companies who are willing to pay between $150 - $250 million dollars for SMS in the last 24h. Of course that can be bluff... but the reviews and the amount of people I see who are picking up PC2 (some of whom didn't play PC1, like myself) is quite good.
A lot of people I used to race every weekend back in GT5/6 are all playing PC (they created a FB group for it even). This is probably happening around the world with other people and there's no marketing campaign that can move a player to buy GTS if their friends are moving to PC2 (and vice versa ofc). That's why I was expecting something today, because the fans and the active users are the ones who will make or brake a game, especially an e-sports focused game. You want to have the best drivers there and those will not care about
fanboyism. They will stay if GTS is good enough. If the average active user of GTS is creating liveries, shooting scapes and doing some races now and then, the whole e-sports thing is kinda meaningless (I hope this doesn't happen of course).
This is obviously my opinion and I might be wrong.
