I'm not allowed to start a new thread yet so I dont know where to post this.

But I would like to know if GT5 does make any use of the Move controller? Yamauchi mentioned something like this in the past.

I would have got a better look at GT5 in HMV but i was in a rush for the Job centre then when i went back there was 2 idiot kids trying to race but instead they were crashing into every corner i could not help but stand , watch and hold myself from laughing it was that bad. even when gave them a pointer they just cursed at me then i went and destroyed their times by like 35 seconds.

But from what i did see it looks like they did a good job the quality was a little rubbish because HMV had not set up it properly. I chose the Tesla roadster (electric) the physics engine i am putting close to prologue but more refined.

It's a massive improvement gt4 though.

Just ordered a PS3 today (For the weekend) and if its good enough I will buy a GT3 RSV2 +clubsport this spring :) unless fanatic keeps being unable to keep stock (Expected Shipping is Jan 2011 atm)

I am glad they decided to run the active shadows way, it's just progress that can be painful in the beginning but when I'm watching dusk videos I just feel the revolution, there is some kind of atmosphere that can't be seen in any other game.

New smoke effects combined with wind, correctly producing and dispersing into air are fantastic, so are skidmarks and added reverse lights. They don't do the world of GT totally another place but they just add to realism.

60FPS and 16 cars on the track at the same time, that is just new standard and it's something that is welcomed to the world of GT as well.

But at the same time I feel they should run the game in 720p and not to try things that PS3 isn't capable of as it is. With sacrifice of some resolution (which even isn't really fullHD as it is now) we could get clean shadows, no shimmerings, better textures, better particle effects, no jaggies and blocks, no cardboard trees, car reflections on every wet track and just more consistent visual impression that has been GT's trademark for its whole existency.

I agree; I would probably have preferred 720p, with an overall smoother and more polished experience (if, indeed, such a trade-off is feasible. it may well be that 1080p was much easier to attain than 16 cars at 60fps, regardless of other factors).

@G T Allegerita: You're welcome; Samsungs do have their charms; and at the end of the day, you'll almost certainly have a great time on GT5; surely that's the most important thing (even if certain areas aren't perfect)?

My impressions (til level 10):

- Carsounds are awesome (change with tuning)
- Physics are awesome
- Wheelsteering physics setup customizeable: Amateur, Pro, Sim
- AI sometimes unfair (push you off the road)
- Performance tuning on standard cars, example an exhaust, not visible

Greatest racingame i´ve ever played :dopey:

You're allowed to force people off the road, without contact of course

Could we all keep calm and hold any worries about the game until it is actually out and available to all. There are one or two posts appearing in here that are based on very little knowledge.

Dan has gone to the trouble of writing a review, which is quite well informed and balanced, lets not ruin it.

Grim 👍

I'm still excited about the game but I have to admit I'm shocked by learning just now that it's not full HD. When a company states a game runs in 1080p I expect 1920x1080 because that's what 1080p is to Joe User. It is to me anyway. 1280 is not at all close to 1920 in my book. I have no problems with this per se but I do with the fact that they've tried to market it making people believe they're getting full HD.

Are you trying to say GT5 is 1280x1080? I'd like to know the source of this information because all of the photo mode screenshots are 1920x1080, and if the vertical lines did equal 1280... the output would be almost-square shaped and thus wouldn't be the correct ratio for widescreen displays, yet it fits perfectly.

You dont measure resolution like that. The fact that you can upscale a dvd and play it on your full hd tv doesnt mean the source has 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Uh, yes you do. When you upscale an image, you either keep it the same ratio and have borders on the screen, or you stretch the image to fill the screen. Neither of which occur in GT5.

I thought they were pausing, rendering screen areas separately, stitching them together and applying post for photomode. At least this is what several other console games do.

That's more than likely what it does for Photo Travel since it outputs at much higher resolutions. Even if it does it for regular photo mode, 1280x1080 doesn't make sense... there's no way GT5's output is almost a perfect square.

Ah, Anamorphic widescreen could well be the answer. I didn't know the PS3 was capable. I'm still more than happy with 1280x1080 if it's true, that's higher than PGR4, Halo 3, Call of Duty, MGS4...

Can anybody with the game tell me if you can use the who Top Gear Test track? What I mean by that is use the whole runway for highspeed runs and not just the circuit.

Basically can you free roam it?

Yeah 1280x1080 is perfectly sufficient for this game. Some pixel count comparisons:

SD or better:
720 x 576 (PAL DVD) = 414,720 pixels
1024 x 600 (COD4, COD:WAW, PGR 3) = 614,400px
1138 x 640 (Halo 3) = 728,320 px
1024 x 768 (MGS4) = 786,432 px

Although MGS4 exceeds 720 lines, it is does not qualify as HD due to a lack of horizontal resolution.

HD:
1280 x 720 (720p) = 921,600 px
1280 x 1080 (GT5) = 1,382,400 px
1920 x 1080 (1080p) = 2,073,600 px

Very few games actually run at 1080p it should be noted. Virtua Tennis 3, Fifa Street 3 are examples, but they lack any AA and graphically aren't great anyway.

So really, GT5 is going to be exceptional in terms of resolution and overall visual quality. Few console games will ever compare until the next console generation I reckon.

It's really the inconsistency, rather than any kind of general let-down that Gran Turismo produces. Shadow effects are mostly the best I've ever seen in a video game. But, in places, it can get a bit patchy. Moreover, the standard cars don't look that hot. Against the genre; I reckon Forza's cars are slightly better than SOME of the standard models (most standards are about on par with Turn 10's efforts, I'd say); premiums are delicious, mind!

Obviously talking about Forza 1 or Forza 2. After playing it last night with my son, they are more on par with GT3-GT4.

Did all the standards get a hi-rez bump? Seems some of them got reduced from GT4 :(

Nice review there, Dan. I just got delivery of GT5 today. Has it been worth the wait? I will say yes. I've been playing for the last two hours. It's night & day compared to prologue. Better handling, computer AI is now great. They now try & race you 👍

Glad you're also enjoying it! I hope the online is as good as the single-player; I guess we'll see. Actually, apparenty the online portion is up now; we'll have to check it out!

I just tried the game and I must say I can't drive as good as I did in GT5 Prologue (no wonder). Physics are really different so I'll need more time to tell if I like it but it's surely very nice. I don't even think I've realised I can just play it whenever I want now. I'm still in the old "search for GT5 news" mode.

Why are there so many few cars in the arcade mode and they are not split up into manufacturers like GT4!!

Thats where you have to unlock them in GT mode. ;)

I know that the list of cars on arcade mode isn't like the way GT4 had shown it. Probably be back for GT6, for the PS3 I think?

Does anyone here own a 3D TV? I have yet to hear anyone comment on the 3D experience of Gran Turismo. I have a Panasonic VT25 3D plasma screen and I can't wait to see what it looks like.

Unfortunately I can't open threads because I'm too 'new' on this forum but I plan to do a detailed writeup on how the 3D mode works out for me. Probably before the weekend :)

I just played this game and yes it is epic i like it alot.. First car i drove was the Italia AND OMG ITS FAST and hard to control on the pad. I took it around nurburg for a lap. And that was the hardest lap of my life. Sorry about spelling Im just really excited. Its pretty real though Driving in the grass has big penalties when after you get back on the track . Only thing i dont like so far is shifter animation. But sadly i have to go back to work.. DAMMMM.. bUT WHEN i get home im going to start my gt carrier. YAYYYYY

Really enjoying it so far. Yes, it's not without it's faults (that have been more than covered on here) but overall, great stuff :)
