I wish. I would easily trade 500 cars for sounds like that. Quality over quantity. Do we really need 1000 cars. They don't make any PGR games anymore :( I wonder where the sound team is now, or working on now...

PD should hire them!

Don't you mean to say 200? After all, that is the number of cars being recreated for this game. The rest are simply ported over from past titles and presumably confined to their game mode. I wouldn't want any less than 200 vehicles in my Gran Turismo game. 👎

Yeah under 200 would definitely be disappointing.

No, GT life contains 1000 cars. The premium and standard cars will not be split over two different game modes. What would be the point of them being in the game? Considering they had to re-mix the sounds for all of these cars, and implement the data gathered into the new physics engine etc. Porting is a lot of work you know.

Yes, but "better" is subjective and based entirely on your limited (no insult intended) experience, which is probably dominated by games such as NFS and Forza... ;)

Well if GT5 sounds better than NFS and Forza what are people moaning about?

Some people need to get out a little bit more. The same argument goes around in circles and it can't possibly be concluded on a forum due to so many variables.

I've said before and i'll happilly demonstrate to anyone in person, GT5P actually sounded ok on a decent sound system, and by decent i mean real speakers and a real amplifier, the engine sounds drive emotion as long as you play them loud enough, ie, at levels you would experience if you were actually racing.
GT5 looks to have improved sounds, first hand experience of demo setups back this up.

Anyone putting all thier faith in:

crappy computer speakers;
playing exceptionally compressed youtube videos;
through a web standard, flash, which isn't exactly known for it's high fidelity;
through cheap soundcards;
recorded at a varying range of quality;
by a massive variation of recording equipment,
at poor positioning to the stereo of the speakers,
in a noisy enviroment;
by a TV that isn't capable of playing a fraction of what the ps3 can output, and is also desgned to be placed in a living room enviroment, close to the walls;

cannot possibly make any factual statement if the game will sound like it should when i take it home and play it on my system.

Based on some of the statements in here, i could use the same logic to say GT5's graphics are crap because of the quality of my camera phone taking video footage from a black and white tv, pointed directly into the sun over a coax lead because if doesn't even have scart.

/rant.

Ok, note to self... After you buy a PS3 and GT5 don't forget to buy real speakers and a real amplifier, or the cars will sound like a psp game... Thanks i think i'm ready for november now :dunce:

Are you sure? I mean is this already been confirmed they will be united?
I can easily imagine there being seperate game-modes as there are more differences than purely graphical and no cockpit view ( damage for example ).

I'm sure PD will probably have some technology to make sure it renders full frames other than Visual Sync. I'd prefer my game to run at 55-60fps with a little tearing than jump down to 30fps every time it went under 60.

If they did something like simulate the completed frame response to the drawing part of the engine, they could have it tear free at any multiple of any number, rather than just 60. I don't quite know how this stuff works but I'm sure PD will choose the right option.

Yeah. I think people won't even notice if it drops few frames or some torn frames. GOW3 runs at variable frames from 60-30fps but they did just a good job that it is not noticeable. I think some intense scene runs around 30-40 and some around 50-60 and the gameplay is never effected because it still feels good.

While all that maybe true, car sounds have always been a weak spot in previous GTs compared to other racing games.

In GT4 I would do anything to avoid a racing muffler because it turned every car into a vacuum cleaner.

GT5P was an improvement, but they had no where to go but up.

The whole argument is flawed on the basis that most people don't have a decent audio system, and games like Forza and Shift sound better to me.

As others have pointed out, your opinion is based purely on what sounds good to you. To me, Forza sounds ok and best on stereo speakers, Shift is a soundtrack straight from The Fast and The Furious, exciting but not realistic.

Yes that's all fair and well but look at this. This video is from PGR4, considered by many to have very impressive sound. This video is recorded off-screen, then uploaded to youtube which is then compressed. I played it through my Logitech Z-2300 2.1 channel computer speakers (which are pretty basic but more than good enough for computer use) through a Auzentech Prelude soundcard and the onboard soundcard too. It still sounds great. I then plugged in my cheap set of earphones, again sounded great. Then downloaded the video (and many others from same user) and transferred them onto a usb stick. Played them through my cheap Sony SDTV stereo speakers and it still sounded great. No matter where and what I used to play it, it still sounded great.

I used to own this game when I had a 360 and believe me, when you turn the volume up to ridiculous levels it sounds incredible, but I could still enjoy it at a low volume with crappy $10 headphones. In my opinion GT sound is still very poor, it is improving yes...slowly, but no matter what excuses I hear about it, I remain unconvinced. This is my opinion and please don't take it as a form of arguing or anything of the sort. Just putting in my 2 cents

....

I agree that yes the sounds on that video are pretty cool, i've played PGR and quite enjoyed the sounds. You must also consider that sounds are created for specific enviroments, pop music is sampled to sound best on car speakers and ipod headphones, classical music is designed to sound best on proper high-fidelity systems.
PGR was designed for mass consumption, to be ok on everything, perfect on none.
GT5 has been designed to sound best on the best system, unfortunately PD may miss out some of the mass public, but generally, if you care about sounds you'll have a decent sound system already.

Ok, note to self... After you buy a PS3 and GT5 don't forget to buy real speakers and a real amplifier, or the cars will sound like a psp game... Thanks i think i'm ready for november now :dunce:

Extra note; The best way to play GT5 would be on the systems they use to design the game. Have a look at the messy setup shown in the tour around PD's studio when Kaz drove the ring. Note: Seperate speakers placed around the seat, and a seperate amplifier. PD probably could spend more time developing a 'better stereo soundtrack', but at the same time, do you expect them to focus time on developing graphics for non-HD users?

After 5 (is it 6 by now?) years, I sure hope the sound is greatly improved. I've been using rFactor for several weeks now, all I have to say is that the sound some moders create are amazingly realistic. If independent aficionados can deliver such real and enveloping sounds, I sure expect no less from GT5. As I have commented here before, GT5p's lack of enveloping realistic sound, make me feel as if I am driving an off the lot car with the AC running. BTW, I am running my PS3 through a THX 7.1 receiver, taking full advantage of the surround effects. In my opinion, great sound effects, engine, gear shifting, brakes, tire-road contact and all the other subtle sounds make up 50% of the immersive experience of a simulator.

OT-> Um guys, there is a sound thread that you guys can bicker here:

BT-> Moving on...what or how could PD can top the awesomeness they presented in E3 and Gamescom in TGS? Spa? Grindelwald? SSR11? More GoKart features? Keep the thread going fellas!

Well, this may sound bizarre, but I hope to see more premium kei cars at TGS. :dopey: I can't get enough!

Also, I expect something weather-related.

Aloha62_2: I agree with you there but I think the Japanese are more loyal to their staff and especially cause it's such a small team, they probably feel like a family. I can't see them firing the sound team for another, I could be wrong though. That's just the feeling I get when I see scenes from P.D.

I was thinking the same thing, it's been 13 years and they still suck at it basically;), what other explanation is there...I can't believe that KY, with his maniacal search for perfection, is satisfied with those sounds...maybe his cousins work there so he hasn't got the heart to fire them or something...lol just remembered we had a theory going, way back in the sound thread, that KY is romantically involved with the head of the sound department, a true gay soap opera about love, honor and betrayal... :D;):p
spoiler: in all stories, sound guys at PD suck.:scared::dopey:

umm...no, both are design to work on everything, it's just that one does and the other doesn't.

WOW?

It is a high pitched whine just like in every other GT game. Sure it is improved, still but far from realistic. And the sound didn't seem to change from cockpit to external which is a big no-no.

What are you talking about? There was a hugh difference. Inside the car the sound is muffled as it should be considering its a high end luxury car however when he switched to external bumper cam. You could hear the beast of an exhaust just screaming. :drool:

Well, track editor ( or course maker ) and karts are already confirmed which would leave that "stunt arena" as a real possibility I guess ( all three mentioned by that Sony CEO or whatever, not sure all three will make it therefore ).
Not sure what to make of that to be honest........

Agreed, I use 2 sets of logitech pc speakers with 2 subs on my rig, one at the front and one under the seat, with speakers on the left and right both front and rear with sound output set to component on my ps3. I have no complaints about the sound from GT5P and I can also feal vibrations through the rig when going over apex's.

-> ...
This is not really news, but I found some additional information known through interviews at the E3 that I didn't know, on the japanese BBS 2ch:
^ We just have to wait for TGS for everything to explode. ;)

👍

Nurburgring Load time video.
GT4, GT5, Forza 2, Forza 3, and PGR4 all in the comparison
=vid=
^ Thanks for the video, (although its been removed now). :(

Any one seen realistic Vtec kick in on the hondas yet? The Integra in prologue had realistic sound but it lacked the infamous "V-tech Yo" step up. If GT5 has that, then I'll be in heaven lol. The Zonda's sound does seem good albeit questionable due to the nature of the recording. Oh well who cares now we've got skidmarks and reverse lights :lol:
^ Yes, I do drove two distinct Honda B and K series engines in both GT and in real life. I can give you an inital explaination between the two.

- The K-series or K20 engines from the DC5 Integra seems very realistic in my opinion. Since I drove two K20 engines, the EP Civic Si & the RSX Type-S. These two cars poseses a milder feeling 'two-stage' VTEC on which the power delivery is smoother and more refined. On which in certain situations it made me a bit dissapointed just a bit. It just doesn't have the "VTEC YO" factor. When VTEC kicks in, its sound is more of a growl compared to a B-series. :)

- The B-series or the B16, B17 or B18 for that matter posseses a higher pitch sound. And unlike the more refined K-series, the B had a 'one-stage' VTEC. The transition to VTEC is much more noticable, jerky, and more satisfying IMO. This engine created the "VTEC YO" trend and this engine sounds like a Super Saiyan "YAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!", this engine just feels like it does not want to stop revving, as if it challenges you to keep on going! Like saying "is that all you got!? Huh!? Huh!? Huh!?" the engine IS poking at YOU with a stick, not the other way around, and I simply love it!;)

Well, this may sound bizarre, but I hope to see more premium kei cars at TGS. :dopey: I can't get enough!

Also, I expect something weather-related.
^ I want to see more tracks than cars this time around. This 20/70 is driving me nuts! :scared:

I want to see a Koeniggsegg CCGT at night, in the rain, on a beatifully re-mastered Trial Mountain or Deep Forest

umm...no, both are design to work on everything, it's just that one does and the other doesn't.

GT5 has been designed to play at 5.1/7.1, with good quality speakers, through an amplifier that can output a suitable 'true-life' volume. The same as it has been designed to be used with a steering wheel, and it has also be designed to play on a HDTV. Using the correct steering wheel, a decent HDTV and decent sound, you will enjoy GT5 as it was designed. You can go above and beyond these specifications and decide to use a 'buttkicker' or 'motion simulator', that's your choice, the game wasn't designed to use such extras, but it will work.

You can play using an old black and white non-HD TV, through mono speakers using the controller if you wish, but the game wasn't designed that way, so the result may not be optimal. It will work, but not as designed.

In a similar way, many films are designed and produced to be best at cinemas on super size widescreens, the detail added that is only visible on such screens proves this point. The film may play ok on your TV, with the black bars at top and bottom, but it wasn't designed for your home TV and therefore will never be as good.

I think those sounds are all ok, they not that raw but hey try to play the real zonda R sound to your girlfiend or wife and you will see what you get :D

that's a good point.:sly:

Don't really care actually, I enjoy playing GT5P and the sounds don't really bother me

Well when it comes to sound design, it's been designed poorly. Good sound design will sound good on no matter what speaker/system. Only those expensive sound systems will enhance it and make it sound better. That is why there is such things. For better quality. When it comes to music, music producers and sound engineers have to master the track for it to sound good on ALL systems. For example I'm an amateur producer myself, mainly in the uplifting trance genre but I know that if it's not mastered correctly a record label wont go anywhere near it. They require it to have a good mix, so it sounds good wherever it's played. Some labels even do it themselves. This goes for all genre's. High quality sound systems just enhance the sound, to a "studio" type quality. So if PD have designed GT to only sound good on an expensive system, that equals poor mixing & mastering and overall bad design. In other words a bad idea.

Erhm ok, I know this is off topic but several years ago I did a(n) (almost) perfect race in GT4 (much faster opponents and not touching the wall or any car once) and ultimately wanted to share it here on GtPlanet when I got an account, just never had the oppertunity to do so, untill now. I'm posting it here because the GT4 section is dead and because I would like to share it with as many as possible, some comments on youtube would be nice. :p

What does this have to do with GT5 news and discussion ?

It may well be a bad idea, but then as an amateur producer you must also know that most of the latest popular music is designed for car speakers and headphones. Radio stations may use hardware to add there own 'pop' or 'sparkle' to the signal, but overall it's designed to play on pretty basic hardware. A top of the range sound system will actually sound worse than basic speakers for some music, just because the original is crap.
Pop music, especially sold online via itunes etc, generally has little or no real bass and no real precision at high ranges, its destined for crap headphones and so is designed that way.

From what we have seen of PD's studio, GT5 has obviously been designed for surround sound, it may sound ok in stereo, but it was never designed to be played that way.

damn it looks beautiful (never played GT4 .. PS3 is my first PS)

You're honestly REALLY missing out. GT5 is going to blow GT4 out of the water, but GT4 was incredible in it's own. It's probably not worth going out and picking up a PS2 at this point, though. I just picked up another copy of GT4 because I think my old copy was messed up, going to get on it some before GT5 comes out
