gt5 loading times.

You can speed up the menu loading times at periods of high online activity by disconnecting your PS3 from the net. When the PD servers are rammed the menus hang while trying to load friend status etc.

I suspect as this is clearly a blocking operation that disconnecting your PS3 will ALWAYS make menu loading faster.

i installed to HDD, it was the first thing the game asked me to do on initial installation.

SSD, you mean i can install it to a USB stick?

One thing I don't know about this for sure:
There is a question whether you want to install date on the HD during installation, that is correct. But there is an additional option to install more data in the "Options" menu. Would this help?
I don't know, haven't tried by myself, because it copies the data for quite a long time...

I recommend downloading the 8GB or so package that GT offers you.

To be honest, I don't mind the loading times and the package has improved my campaign loading a lot.

GT5 always tries to connect if you're signed into the Playstation Network. If it's taking a while, I'll disconnect and load times become faster.

Before messing with your install, bring up the PS3 menu screen, go to Account Management under the Playstation Network, hit triangle and sign out. See how the game loads for you then.

Thanks guys.

I know for a fact that it asked me to install more data so loading would be faster on initial install and it did say it was 8 gis worth (i have a 250Hdd so not that bothered) but was unaware i could install even more.

I'll have a go later tonight at installing more and an also signing out of PN, but i'll do the additional install first and see if that makes any difference and report back...once my kids are in bed and i have it to myself lol

Thanks again :)

AFAIK there is no second install...the one under Options is the same as the one it asks you to do when you boot the game up for the first time.

I tried it. You are right. After selecting the install in "Options" the space used by the GT5 is the same (~6500Mb).
However, it is kinda stupid that the game offers this possibility after you have already selected it during the install.
It even copied something for 13 minutes! (I guess it just overwrote the already installed files)

No, I mean you can exchange your magneto-optic hard-disk drive for solid state drive without mechanical parts and you will get aproximatelly two times faster loading times.

And what would be the cost of this upgrade? ;)

And a minor correction: HDDs has nothing to do with magneto-optic drives.

No you don't, it has been tested that SSD's on the PS3 show little to no improvement for loading times.

Except that if it didn't offer that option you know there would be fanboyz on here who would be wailing about how they didn't do the initial install because they were so eager to play GT5, and those stupid people at PD don't even let you install it after that...

The amount of button pressing and poor menu design that slows down the process of playing the game is frustrating.

I think I see the GT logo on screen more than I drive the car.

And why when you win a car does it not go straight to the garage, instead you have to go through this frustratingly slow car appear out of the dark every time.

These poor menu designs totally ruin the flow of GT.

Also what I don't like: it is very complicated, and time consuming to reach the tuning shop from the point where you can select a race event.
I go there, check e.g the tire restrictions and I notice that I don't have that. So now I have to go back to the main screen, go to tuning shop, buy the tires, and go back to the racing event selection again. I am not saying that this normally would not be okay...but with these waits it is frustrating. There should be a quick link to the shop, buy what you need, go to race, that's all..no need to see the main screen again.

My bad, sorry. Just "magnetic drive" is correct.

Of course, the cost of the upgrade depends on the price of the certain SSD, which is more expensive than standard mechanical HDD.

I ran some tests on my SSD [solid state hard drive] on my pc. Random access read/write times were a little over 10 times faster than that of my standard sata II drive. Boot time of the PC was reduced by a similar margin.

These are pricey but very very fast and have the extra benefits of using less power, producing less heat and lasting virtually forever.

No you don't, it has been tested that SSD's on the PS3 show little to no improvement for loading times.

It shows huge gains in speed when the task has nothing to do with reading off the bluray drive. Games that are purely saved to HDD will boot and load way faster than one that reads mostly off a bluray disc.

Speaking of, I would love an option in the game to fully install the contents of the bluray onto the internal hard drive (music and all) and have the disc in the drive only to verify the game is there. During gameplay the drive should just idle. My bluray drive died last night during a race after music died out. The race still continued for a little with regular sounds, etc but then suddenly the controls stopped responding. I am also sure fully installing to internal would help load times even on regular platter type drives.

Did you guys notice that the more time you are playing it, after some hours, the game takes a little bit more to load?
