Depends where the game drops you, as an edge A/B driver I get a real mix. I can be in a mostly A room and can finish last and lose almost nothing or a B room and win and gain almost nothing. Both races back to back. It all makes perfect sense though.

I dunno why you gotta be so combative all the time
You're reading a tone of your own choosing.

I was (and am) confused why anyone would be annoyed about gaining DR. Well, other than people who crash it to seal-club in GTWS, but as the season's already started and has no dropped rounds that wouldn't make sense either.

I then very clearly explained the observations, to assist.

If that's "combative", clearly we have different understandings of that word too. The relevant member doesn't seem to have taken the same reaction...

Yesterday I started P1 and finished P3 but only gained 2-300 DR. Just a bit surprised I gained so many more points today for the same finishing position.
It all depends on the starting DR of everyone in the lobby.

At low A in a pure A lobby you could have a wild variance of 30,000pt (not as wild as A+ which now stretches to a spread of 100,000pt).

If you're racing high Bs too and they finish ahead of you, you won't gain so much DR, because you gain more from beating people who have higher DRs (and less from beating those with lower DRs), while losing more from being beaten by people who have lower DRs (and less from being beaten by those with higher DRs).

@Haitauer's point about the promotion bonus is relevant too. I wasn't really looking at the graph, but if you started close to the B/A threshold and got enough points from the third place to pass it you will have received a bonus DR bump. That seems to be there to prevent people sliding back right away and yoyo-ing.

Normally in race A my DR gains/losses are in the 10s, sometimes low hundreds. Today's race however I gained over 2k by starting P2 and finishing P3. This was a DR B lobby with one DR A player (who won). Bit miffed as to how I gain that much.

You reached DR A at 30k points, and the promotion gives you something like 2000 points extra as a bumber, so you dont drop back to dr B after one bad race.

It’s the jump or drop between levels mate.

If you drop below 30k then you won’t go to 29,500 you’ll actually drop into the 28,000’s.

The game just puts you deeper into the new rank. I’d guess this is to stop immediate bouncing up and down

Switched to the Jag in Race C and immediately knocked 1.4 seconds off my Genesis QT! Goes well in the race too, and it's very kind to it's tyres. Those who can protect their tyres may be able to get away with not changing them.

First race I entered with it Jags finished in the first 4 places, second race the top 4 were all in the Genesis though, so either looks like a good option.

I'm sorry to say this, but I've lost all hope. Even when I try braking earlier and coasting like people recommend here, I still can't go outrageously fast. I feel like I can only dream of ever making it to A+, let alone the Gran Turismo World Series. It just seems like there's something wrong with me that makes it impossible for me to reach the same level as the absolute best Gran Turismo players and the fact that I often can't match my times with elite players even when I try doing the same tracks again and again and again really shows that there's some sort of insurmountable barrier for me... I'm just a mediocre wannabe at the game and I just can't go outrageously fast as a controller user... I've tried so many different strategies for years and I still can't get better... I'm sorry.

I'm a bit lost as to why it matters? I'm a motorsport nut, I only get within 2 to 3% of the top QT times yet I am still just a DR-B driver. So long as you are matched with folks you can race with, what does it matter what DR you are?

The game constantly sorts me with people who have much better qualifying times than me and I'm almost never able to match up with their qualifying times no matter how hard I try and so I frequently start either close to last place or in it and I'm almost never able to move that far up from where I started, so my DR is often doomed to plummet... There's just something wrong with me and I just can't be that good at the game no matter what I do or how much I want to...

let alone the Gran Turismo World Series
One player in all of North America did that in the Nations Cup this year. In Manufacturers Cup you have to contend with the entire Americas. On pad alone, there's maybe a handful of people worldwide capable of it.

Don't worry about it.

Looks like it’s going to be a lonely week up front on the Alt account as I’m serving a month long ban on the main account 🤦‍♂️ need to take some Valium pre race I think 😂

Annoying to get the ban though! Some Wally went through me to get to the guy that pushed past him and send us both into the barrier! I had maybe 4 or 5 chances to punt him back and didn’t do any of them as it’s not really my style. Called him a Stupid idiot after the race and bam next morning 1 month ban!!!! Would have been better off destroying his race in the game and not saying anything!!!! Silly game!

None of us on here are that level mate. You’re comparing yourself to the world’s best! The GTWS is literally the 12 best players in the world and I think A+ is like 1 or 2% of the player base.

You wouldn’t go for a game of football and complain you’re not as good as Ronaldo or that you can’t throw an American football like Tom Brady or that Usain Bolt is a few seconds quicker then you over a 100m.

Stop beating yourself up, @newmedia_dev has always said that DR is just a metric that shows you where you are, it’s not the goal (took me a while to learn this but I’m happier now I have).

100% this! As long as you’re not driving around on your own then there is fun to be had! I’m not going to lie and say that fighting for 11th is as fun as fighting for a podium but it’s definately still fun!

I've got 120+ wins, some weeks I'm on the pace, last few weeks I haven't been at all. I've never been A, only B. It's how it goes, one week you'll find a combo that suits you. Give yourself a break.

OK, I’ll try to give you a more serious response than yesterday.

First of all, what kind of times are we talking? What DR are you at now? Without knowing the numbers in detail I can only assume a bit but it kind of sounds like you’re generally aiming too high. Not a bad thing per se at all to aim high but it sort of sounds like you’re trying to run before you can even walk. Somewhat lacking in patience? It does take a long time to develop the finer skills.

Some of the particular nuances in driving at a certain higher level may become clear(er) to you only once you reach certain times, whereas now you may feel clueless as to why you’re X second(s) behind.

Thanks. It's just I've been playing the game for years and I still can't make it to the top 100 players in the leaderboards in the long run. I've been stuck in limbo between A and B and right now I'm B and I've never made it to A+. I just always feel so slow and underpowered as a controller user.

So you're on my pace. Got news for you, you're never getting top 100, if you had the talent you'd have done it by now. Is what it is. Top 100 is hard as heck, I mean seriously difficult.

I do hear you on being stuck in tough rooms, i suspect you are a low A driver right now and your Safety rank is S, so you're driving as hard as you can and still at the back. Accept your fate and true pace and let yourself slip into DR-B, I was also A for a log time and got tired of starting P13 to 16. In b rooms i am top 5, not seal clubbing but able to race really well. It's not fun being pounded race after race, run with guys you can keep up with.

Thanks, but even when my DR is B, it's still insanely common for me to be put in tough rooms and I just can't understand why I don't have the talent necessary for getting top 100.

Same.

I have too much going on to dedicate the time to practicing. Back in the GT1/2 days, when I was a student, and the GT3 days when I could leave my job in its office, I could sink hundreds of hours in and set decent times on the old leaderboard sites. Now I just play for fun and/or work purposes (no quicker way to suck fun out of a hobby than having it be your job), and rarely even do Daily Races.

Gets easier and more enjoyable when you don't set over-the-top goals for yourself, creating unnecessary stress and pressure.

Just had a bumper race at Sardegna, started p2, jag in p1, quickly fell to p3 and almost further if it wasn’t for a mishap behind me which gave me 2secs breather, front two battled each other and inevitably lost time and got past those, built up a 2 secs lead at the pit on lap 6 and he came out and pulled it back to a sec, which is where it sat until the last lap and a small mistake for me on the last corner nearly let a jag in but held on for the win!

Switched to the Jag in Race C and immediately knocked 1.4 seconds off my Genesis QT! Goes well in the race too, and it's very kind to it's tyres. Those who can protect their tyres may be able to get away with not changing them.
That Jag looks a real decent race car and I feel that the Genesis is a little slow off the corners so I may well give it a go, I think I’m as fast as I can get in the Genesis

Dude, then you can join us in the ‘never getting to A+’ group 🤣 don’t sweat it mate, sounds like you’re trying too hard and getting too frustrated with it, it won’t help.

Spend a whole week on one track, do a few races per day, trying to improve your QT and racing trying to be smooth and finishing in the blue DR, top 7 or 8,

Watch some guides and see where they break etc and get to know the braking points.

It will take a lot of practice, or just get yourself a wheel, I couldn’t play this on controller I have to say 😁

@Lightsider74 i had a race this morning, nothing special, finished 2nd and this win and got 1200 odd DR points 🤷‍♂️

😂😂😂

Mate there is usually around 50,000 people doing the daily races! You’re fuming you’re not in the top 0.2% in the world!!!

I think for your mental wellbeing you might need to aim a little lower?

But if you really do want to ekk out some more pace then telemetry is your best friend. Pick one corner where you lose the most time and focus on getting that better and once that’s done pick a different corner. Build it up piece by piece

"you don't have to outrun the tiger, you just have to outrun the guy next to you" has never been more true here. The top 100 for the leaderboard (I'm assuming you mean in sport mode) is gonna be reserved for essentially some of the fastest drivers in GT, and that's not really very attainable on controller. I'm not exactly a pro myself (low-mid B), but to be brutally honest, it's not realistic to be going for those kinds of times. I've kinda found that racecraft is more important than pure pace anyway, and I think that it is possible to get to A on pad, it just requires consistency and grit really. As long as you can get top 5 finishes, you're gaining a solid amount of DR and that is the thing that helps really. At the end of the day though, the goal is to just enjoy the game, and "if its not fun, why bother".

Very true.

I've been GranTurismoing for years, run mainly now at DR C, and I'm happy if I get a QT in the top 10,000 😂. I managed P30,000 a couple of weeks ago (can't remember which race), but still ended up in some great races.

Also, still love the racing, even though I know I'll never be A rated, never mind A+....

This was meant lightheartedly!!

But telemetry is your best bet and failing that there are tons of coaches out there that could probably give you some pointers during a session

I think finding the joy in the racing is key. Still something I’m struggling with a bit as I’m still too focused on pace

It's all about the racing, if it is clean and competitive it is a ton of fun and the top tier of B drivers are no joke, they're pretty dang quick.

if you're still being dumped in super tough rooms as a high B, are they B rooms or split A/B? What percentage off the top time in the world are you qualifying with? Sounds odd but you may be better served tanking your QT a little because if you're really hot over a lap the game will throw you in mostly DR-A rooms rather than all b rooms, and yeah that is tough sledding.

This was fighting for low placings but the racing was so good and mostly quite clean, i did not really care.

I'll think about it.

Side note, reverse eau rouge on the thumbnail looks fun 😅

As a DR B controller player, one tip I will offer is to work on moderating acceleration and braking. I found my trail braking needed work as the brake application would turn out to be more all or nothing than gradual like the top players. That improved my times and turn in a lot.

Another piece I work on as a controller player is accelerating out of a higher gear. I see top players short shift quite often which prevents oversteer and spin offs. In the right situation, ot can cut lap time dramatically.

Thanks, but I just have too much trouble getting everything just right. I think I just need to let it go like others have said.
