So far, I'm liking it, but not loving it.
Don't get me wrong, its a technically a great game on every level, but.. something about it doesn't feel like GTA... I can't put my finger on it, but one of the first things that struck me, was how wide open the city was, it reminded me a lot of NFS: The Run! Driving phyiscs aside, it's much easier to just run flat out through the city without hitting anything.. And the whole character switching thing reminds me too much of the last Driver game. It feels like it's lost a little character in pursuit of being more real.
The other thing that it felt like was... when I first played Red Dead Redemption, it felt like GTA but in the old west... but now GTA V, feels like Read Dead Redemption, but in contemporary LA. That's not so much of a bad thing (because RDR was so good) but again it's like it's mixing its identity.
Don't get me wrong, it looks great, the attention to detail is fantastic, the story so far hangs together really well, it's obviously been very well thought out, the environment is amazing, the visuals are superb, the character customisation is great, the car customisation is great, (some of) the controls are better, all the other little features are great.
.. actually, two things I don't like about the game. 1) The soundtrack. I'm at 10% at the moment, and I've yet to have a good 'moment' with a song - y'know, where a song comes on, and it's a good song, and it's at exactly the right moment, that's a big part of GTA for me.
and, 2) I'm at 10% already. I had the unexpected and unwelcome* opportunity to play it for longer than expected last night (about 8 hours), and it's at 10% already --- and that time included a LOT of cocking about exploring the map... seriously.. take a PCJ600 on a straight-line North from LS! it's a surprisingly fun and capable off road bike --- but I'm worried that perhaps R* have sacrificed some of the longevity of the game assuming the online would compensate - which I'm sure it will for some.. but not me.
*I say unwelcome because it's due to a breakdown in communication with the missus... at least GTA is there for me when I need it!!
It is a great game, but at the moment, it just doesn't have the feel of a GTA game for me..
.. I'm not tooo worried though, I felt the same thing about San Andreas to begin with.. and that turned out to be freakin' spectacular!
