1965-1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint 1600 GTA

170hp is also a vague period assumption. 190-200+ is probably nearer what competition ones get theses days, even using period regulations.

Alfaholics will build you a 1.6 with full period homologation (FIA app.K) and c.180bhp. Wouldn't imagine you'll get any change out of £25k though.

Alternatively, you can have a more modern 2.0l TS, with up to 240 bhp.

They all sound utterly gorgeous :)

Personally, my favorite is the GTAm-R

Dat ass

But those are rare as hell. I think only 12 were build. Not counting replicas of course.

I know that people should vote how they like, and I really don't want to start a big argument.

But those voting anything less than "cool" really don't seem to be getting what a "cool" car is. It's more than just initial looks, power figures, etc.

It's what a car is to those around you. And this car is more than any Ferrari, Lamborghini, or muscle car.

And if you just don't feel the Alfa magic, well I'm sorry. Not to sound like Top Gear, but there's a reason why so many people are voting SZ on this one. And it isn't just from power, looks, or pedigree.

It's a mixture of those qualities, and more. It's a perfect blend of perfection, with just enough imperfections. It's still understated enough to not be ghastly, but it sticks out enough to catch your eye.

Again, I really don't want to tell others that they're voting incorrectly. Everybody should vote how they want. But, if this car doesn't somehow shout cool to you..

Well said. 👍 It's something that science can't explain. The Alfa magic cannot be explained with facts but it sure as hell exists. It's like some spiritual level of the human nature.

Alfa models have been both fast and slow, sporty and luxurious, beautiful and not that beautiful, reliable and totally unreliable... yet somehow they ALL are cool.

Personally, I don't buy in to the 'magic of Alfa' purely because it's an Alfa... well, not the modern ones. It's the older ones I love. Much like Ferrari, I have no interest in in the modern models.

Yes, very rare if original, but many more replicas around. The one above is a replica.

I'm sorry too, but Alfa magic my rear. A brand has nothing to do with being a cool car or not, much much less a suposed "mistique" around it, which is pretty damn uncool because people go around talking about such stuff when in fact it doesn't matter. If a car is cool, it's just cool, regardless of marque. This could be a Fiat, a Lada or a Daihatsu, yet it would still be cool.

This.

This car is cool.

This one is not.

Both are Pontiacs.

Extremly cool ... this car defines coolness

But how?

Everyone here is voting SZ or cool just because it's an old lightweight Alfa. That's not good enough reasoning.

But those voting anything less than "cool" really don't seem to be getting what a "cool" car is. It's more than just initial looks, power figures, etc.

Alright, why don't you tell me what coolness isn't, and then tell me I don't understand coolness when you aren't even giving your own reasons why it's cool. Most people I know would be impressed if I pulled up in a '67 Mustang Fastback or a Ferrari 250. If I pulled up in this old Alfa, half of them wouldn't even know what it is. Not knowing what something is isn't cool. And here you are talking about some mystery reason for the Alfa Magic BS that almost everyone but me here feels makes this car cool. And then you're going on and telling me what that reason isn't.

Apologies if that sounded harsh, I'm just frustrated right now.

The debate is ridiculous. This Alfa is going to be the first car to reach the icebox for no good reason at all. Because Alfa Magic. I feel like I'm arguing with Siri.

This car is cool because it's one of the original sports cars. It's simple, lightweight, powerful, looks perfectly proportioned and also is Italian. Then you have the racing pedigree on top of all that which makes it sub zero for those who know about it. And by now even the average joe "knows" that old Italian cars are cool because Top Gear told them so and this way these cars are universally perceived as cool.

I voted Sub Zero, obviously. Because it's a simple, sleek, lightweight, classy, nimble, red Italian sports car with a sexy name.

To answer the first question, a Veyron is very ugly, won't take corners well

...I wonder when this old stereotype will fade away. I'm not even a fan of the Veyron, but jeebus. It's almost as ubiquitous as the "GT-R is a wheeled PlayStation" one.

You do have a point that 60's Alfas and 60's Ferraris are very different, but I'd still rather have almost any car that was built in the U.S. between 1965 and 1969 before the Alfa.

Of course you would. We'd all like some rather uncool cars. That doesn't make this less cool.

And while 170 hp is impressive for a 60's four-cylinder, it's still only 170 hp. I'd rather have some sort of muscle car from that era with more power, despite the higher weight.

If you decide which cars are cool based solely on their power output, well... I suppose that's your choice, but it's a bit like picking a wife solely based on who has the longest hair.

But how?

Everyone here is voting SZ or cool just because it's an old lightweight Alfa. That's not good enough reasoning.

You've already provided a few:

  • Old (read: classic)
  • lightweight (Performance-minded)
  • Alfa (Paired with that first trait is important; Old Alfa produced cool things, in the same way @Dagger311 pointed out for Pontiac)
  • Homologation special (almost always means a solid Cool-oriented vote here)
  • A real David-and-Goliath vibe (regularly beat up on much bigger cars)
  • Those looks
  • Rarity

Alright, why don't you tell me what coolness isn't, and then tell me I don't understand coolness when you aren't even giving your own reasons why it's cool. "Most people I know" tends to be the substitute for "I think this" around here. Again, I suppose it's fine if you view the Cool Wall in relation to your specific part of the world, but a lot of folks don't.

Not knowing what something is does not always make it uncool. I showed my girlfriend a picture of a Bizzarrini 5300 just now:

Arizona_Bizzarrini5300GTStrada.jpg

And in a split-second, she said it was cool. Naturally, this is just one test example, but surely you can admit that knowing the specifics of a particular model - or even who made it - is not necessary to deem something cool. Coolness is a gut feeling - so I'm not saying you're wrong to not auto-cool the Giulia * - which is why you're likely to get a bunch of people from various different parts of the world saying the Stratos is cool, despite most non-car folk having no idea what a Lancia even is.

The debate is ridiculous. This Alfa is going to be the first car to reach the icebox for no good reason at all. Because Alfa Magic. I feel like I'm arguing with Siri.

You've said "Alf, Imagine." I can't find Alf in your contacts. Try again?

* - You're still wrong, though :p

I challenge you to show an uncool Alfa then. :p
Well, coolness is for the most part subjectional, but here.
5390.jpg

I already hate the sound of turbos, turbo 4 cylinders sound even worse (in my opinion), and for the same price, I could own a Corvette :p.

Again, much like my signature says, all the above is my opinion. You may think the 4c is awesome. I don't.

It's hard to discuss coolness because it's way to subjective, to be honest... Everyone has a different taste, these polls prove it very well. There's never an option which has a 100% of the votes.

Another thing I never understood. Why do people hate race cars around here so much?

Who said anything about hating it? I love the 155.

Why do people find them uncool? Because what's cool about a car you could never drive? The Cool Wall - at least the inspiration for it, from TG - has always been about road cars, not racers. Obviously here, people are free to nominate race cars, but let's be honest, the only people who'd think you'd look cool pulling up to a club/bar/cafe in a race car would be car nerds. Car nerds aren't cool. To everyone else, you'd just look a douche-canoe.

They don't "hate" race cars, and this has been convered so many times you shouldn't have to have it explained to you by now.

The reasons some people vote race cars automatically uncool is based on a few factors. Firstly, most people will never drive them - and a car that you will never, ever be able to drive is uncool. You might say that the same is true of an exotic sports car, but the exotic sports car is also able to be driven on the road, which at least makes it a more realistic proposition than getting a chance to have a go in one of a handful of race cars ever produced.

Then there's the fact that if you actually drove a race car on the road you'd look like a colossal bell-end. Race cars are noisy, difficult to drive slowly, covered in wings and stickers, and because they're purpose-built to race and not to arrive at your destination in air-conditioned comfort, you'd emerge at your destination dripping in sweat and looking like you'd been beaten up.

I don't like to invoke Top Gear, but if you remember that episode where James May drove the race-prepared Aston Martin on the road, drenched in sweat, half-naked to cool down and sick to death of the squealing racing brakes, you'll understand why some people say a race car isn't the coolest method of transport posted in these threads...

Wait, so the whole of GTP could be considered uncool? Man, I really don't understand this "coolness" thing, I must admit...
