It did nothing that the Sierra and Sapphire Cosworths didn't do before it (in fact like mentioned it was a Sierra with Escort panels) It also launched a zillion poor quality rip-offs. And most of all it's championed by the chav fraternity. Uncool. It would have been seriously uncool if it hadn't been such a good car.

I love the Escort Cossie as a car, but the plain hard truth of the matter is that its not cool in any way shape or form.

Too much of its image is either being owned by morons or ripped off by morons (stick on whale-tails pop up on so many sheds its hard to keep track).

Drive one and people will think you are a 'wide-boy', if you want a cool Escort then its one of these...........

.......but the Cossie (and I once again repeat that I love them as a car) gets an uncool from me, and its borderline seriously uncool.

Seriously, here in the UK you get so many knock-off Cossies, all occuped by these two...

....and you want to call that cool!

I don't consider the people who own the car to affect the "coolness" as I'm looking at the car not the idiot driving it, in my opinion anyway. I know it does for the TopGear cool wall, but I don't give one about the owner/driver. And that applies to all cars, even if it was the Lotus 7 driven by Patrick McGoohan in The Prisoner. (though Lotus 7's are cool anyway).

I imagine everyone has someone they hate that would potentially drive every car that comes up on the cool wall. There are many unlikable people who drive many of these cars because of the very fact they are cool in the first place.

I could also say that Jeremy Clarkson also owned a Cossie once but then again maybe he's not really "cool".

Yes, but it reaches a point where the car develops a reputation based on that. Burberry wasn't chavvy 10 years ago - it's simply the fact that 300,000 chavs started wearing knock-off caps and scarves that's ruined it. Same applies here.

If you wore Burberry in 1999, nobody would have batted an eyelid. Wear it now and you'll have things thrown at you.

As impressive as the Focus RS is, There's still nothing like a real 4WD car on gravel. Sub Zero.

STILL waiting for a new Evo/STI class car from ANYONE.

Not even close, unless VW is underrating the motor by about 35 horsepower. That's playing around with the standard WRX.

Sub zero at the time it was new, seriously un-cool now.

Reasonably quick back in the day, but with a fairly ordinary (heavily understeer based) handling set up. Today, any reasonably competent FWD hot hatch would show it a clean pair of heels and it wouldn't see which way a Focus RS or Megan R26R went, never mind an Evo or STI.

The Cosworth badge is a bit of a marketing tool on this one... The engines Cosworth were building for the last of the RWD Escort rally cars were the real deal... 2.3l, 16v heads, 250bhp+. Bolting a 16v head on an old Ford block and sticking a Cosworth badge on it and a turbo does not constitute a proper Cosworth engine in my book.

Shame the Cosworth name's been ruined over the years. I think Khan own it now... and they are sticking it on chavved up Range Rover Sports built for footballers and their wives.

For serious Ford subzeroness, you need a genuine RS500, a flat front Escort mk2 RS2000 or an Escort mk1 RS1800/Mexico.

This was a hard one for me,

I like Cosworths (though admittedly the Escort cossie is missing that extra something that the original Sierra Cosworth had). however the looks really havent aged well, and these are now only driven by chavs, or general other scum that I wouldnt want to be associated with.

Hence I've given it an uncool (saved from being rated seriously uncool because of the cars actual ability, and a lingering memories of the car from back when it was new.)

Uncool.

I agree with Jondot, Scaff, Danny & Stotty. Great car, ruined by it's chavvy image.

Being an American who disagrees with everything British people have to say, I'm voting sub-zero. We never got the car. I can imagine it would be bunches of fun to roll up on an STi at a stop light in one of these...

...and get blown away by it.

Sub-zero. The cosworth name makes it a legend and spoiler make this thing unique. Add to the fact that its a street legal rally car and you have one of the coolest cars on the street.

Meh, the boggo standard Impreza Turbo I had back in '95 would have eaten Escort Cossie's for breakfast... particularly in the twisties. STI's were import only at the time, but they were much, much faster.

Off the scale. Oh wait, there isn;t an option for that?! Oh well, then it'll have to be Sub-Zero. This is the best Ford ever.

I'm abstaining. It's a great car, but I've never really lusted after one. It could be a nostalgic road-rally weapon, but unlike the Delta Integrale which would get a subzero from me, it's driven by utter, utter morons as a general rule, so any cool it might have had has suffered under the vast weight of idiot that affects all fast Fords in the UK.

So I can declare it neither cool nor uncool.

Better Fords...

Uncool.

I agree with Jondot, Scaff, Danny & Stotty. Great car, ruined by it's chavvy image.

Chav (pronounced /ˈtʃæv/ (CHAV)) is a derogatory term applied to certain young people in the United Kingdom. The stereotypical "chav" is an aggressive teenager or young adult who often engages in anti-social behaviour,[1] such as street drinking, drug abuse and rowdy behaviour. They are often assumed to be unemployed or in a low paid job. It first appeared in English dictionaries in 2005.[2][3] The term Charver is more widely used in North East England.[4] Chavs typically wear tracksuits and hoodies made by sporting brands such as Nike and Adidas. Similarly in the way that the stereotypical 'emos' are known to listen to rock music, typically the type of music that chavs will listen to is dance music and its many sub genres, and rnb/hip hop. Therefore, the modern 'chav' and the modern 'emo' are on opposite ends of the spectrum and are often rivals. Chavs may use bullying or victimize emos because of their differing cultures, and vice versa.

Sorry, I had to look it up in "Wiki". So I guess it just made it uncool because of all the poser's although not quite sure if I drove a real one here in the US people would even know what car it is or if they would think it's a cool car.

My vote is on the Mk1 Escort RS1800. It's classic, stylish and cool. I always wanted one back in high school.
