HANS Device option

This is viewable in the new trailer with the helmets, so this is how I am taking this news.

If they actually update this game with 660 different Hans Devices to choose to wear this will be the next sad news for this game, giving us this option that has no meaning. Its not like they will be able to be seen well.

Wow, let the justifiable complaints begin.
I guess paid advertisement is better than paying ourselves though. ;)

The award-winning Gran Turismo 5 on PlayStation just got safer. Participants in one of the world's most competitive and popular motor racing video games can now choose to wear the HANS Device prior to starting their engines.

Introduced in November of 2010, the global sales of Gran Turismo 5 have exceeded six million. The HANS Device is now the exclusive head and neck restraint available when participants choose their helmets.

“Gran Turismo 5 has a strong following among young people who are interested in motor racing,” said Gary Milgrom vp of HANS Performance Products. “This is a great opportunity for us to introduce young drivers to the importance of the HANS Device when it comes to safety in the real world racing environment.”

Developed by Polyphony Digital and exclusive to PlayStation, Gran Turismo 5 features a large selection of over 1,000 remarkably realistic vehicles ranging from NASCAR Sprint Cup cars to Le Mans prototypes or exotic street cars like Ferrari. Participants can compete in their vehicles on some of the world's greatest race tracks or on courses created by the contestants themselves.

“We know that great champions like Jeff Gordon used video games to help hone the skills he used to win four Sprint Cup championships,” said Milgrom. “A lot of our next-generation drivers are going to emerge from the video game community and we're glad to be associated with a market leader like Gran Turismo 5.”

The HANS Device will be available as part of a patch to be distributed to all countries where Gran Turismo 5 is sold in the regions of North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. “We sell the HANS Device around the world, so the global reach of Gran Turismo 5 matches up well when it comes to bringing the message about safety to all participants in motor racing,” said Milgrom.

1. Drivers in GT5 have always had HANS devices; it just wasn't until the 1.10 patch that either:
a) they were branded as such.
b) we were given the ability to view the back of them to see the brand.
2. Why is this in the "Seasonal Events" section?

^ All very good points.

You can also see the device when pictures of your A spec driver are taken.

Wait, I don't get what this is supposed to be about? I thought we already had HANS Devices on our drivers?

Maybe PD is thinking about adding 1000 differently designed HANS Devices? (Hopes for My Little Pony theme! :D)

Someone has already moved this thread, perhaps they could be kind enough to merge? :gtpflag:

EDIT: Asketh and you shall receiveth 👍

Advertising --> PD Getting more money --> Cheaper DLC?

Here's hoping. I can't really see a point to it other than being a money spinner for PD. If it does help reduce costs of DLC then I welcome it.

Also there's another thread on this already. I'm not sure which came first though.

As I said in the other thread on the same topic...

Drivers in GT5 have always had HANS* devices; it just wasn't until the 1.10 patch that either:
a) they were branded as such, or
b) we were given the ability to view the back of them to see the brand.

*HANS is not just the specific brand, it stands for Head And Neck Safety.

We don't and wont have the option to wear one or not, our GT5 drivers already wear them in racing cars and have since release, except as mentioned above we now can see a "hans" logo on them.

without the Hans Device you get alot of shaking of your head. With the Hans its less Shaky... just a thought

Hans device doesn't support your head during normal racing.

The purpose of this is simply to promote the HANS device and it's real-world benifits. This, however, will not really attract any attention towards it as
1. THe HANS device is not very visible
2. your GT5 driver doesn't recieve any form of damage, mental or physical, meaning there will not be a need to equip it. Also, it means uninformed people who dont know what the HANS is will think that it's ok to race IRL without it:dunce:

Counterproductive, IMO

For this to be a viable promotion of HANS, PD would need to intergrate HANS and the driver's physical status, which I think they will choose not to do:scared:

Or they could have mentioned this oh I don't know last year when the game came out and not seven months later.

It makes me want to buy one IRL then put speakers on the side and install a bluetooth with it. At least I won't get whiplash when someone from online racing sends me to the rail.

Nope, trust me as an owner of a real life HANS I can tell you it does precisely 0 when you're not in an accident. In fact with the new sliding tethers you don't even know its there which is nice, it allows full range of movement for your head (plus it has nice padding underneath making your shoulder belts a lot more comfortable when you're in an endurance race).

Actually HANS is a specific brand, while you are correct about what the acronym means, the specific device that has always been pictured in this game (and is now branded) is the HANS device. Other types of devices are referred to as head restraints or neck restraints by most sanctioning bodies and are visibly significantly different than the HANS.

So, there's an option.

I suppose when we opt to wear hans. Our car got shunt, and the driver survive.
Without it, the driver dead and we'll be back on a-spec level 1. :P

The same goes to the bobs...

Seriously, i don't think it's useful on games. Unless PD planning to make driver's phisycal damage.

This sounds like a press release written by someone with no intimate knowledge of the game making assumptions about the functionality. If I were to take a guess, this part of the article is all that was necessary to report:

" The HANS Device is now the exclusive head and neck restraint available when participants choose their helmets."

seriously who gives a **** about the suits and this HANS device...
yeah the suits look good, but imo they should of been introduced at the very start of the game! which you should be able to customize them with paint chips!

why cant they concentrate on what the people want, i.e actually 1000+ cars and not 200+ skylines, 200+ s2000's,200+ mx-5's etc...

i also think they should add famous drag strips from all over the world and you should be able to customize you normal car into a drag car..
something like this..
image.axd

i also think you should be able to access the settings menu from the pit lane....
the message box that appears when someone enters the room should be an option to turn off, i find it really annoying when in a race someone enters, then there greeting comes up, then they realise there is a race goin on, so they leave, then there leaving message comes up, thats 4 times for someone joining and leaving a room!

and also a better restrictor for cars entering a race, i dont really like the race cars, so when i start a room i say road cars only, but yet there is always one that wants to get in a race car! its quite annoying!

an actual track editor, rather than just putting together a track that GT has already designed, or that you can actually see what your are doing when you are selecting different bends etc....

dont get me wrong i love the game but the more i play it, the more i pick holes at it... this game could be sooooo sooo much better! if they actually concerntrated on what we want, rather than just giving us crap that we dont want nor need!

WTF. This kind of thing is fine, whatever- But what pisses me off is that there are things that we were supposed to get that we haven't yet like in race endurance saves! Also stuff on the box that isn't in the game yet. Oh, and what ever happened to the driver's Club??

I can see adding this type of thing if GT5 were as polished up as it could be, but it clearly is not in a lot of ways. Fix the big things- THEN add the unimportant crap nobody asked for or cares about.

Another WTFPD moment for me.. Oh well.

I know that's just a joke, but my overly-analytical streak demands that I point out that 99% of GT5 players would gasp at the price of a HANS device (or a racing helmet, for that matter). At least from their own website, a professional HANS device is just shy of $1000, and the sport ones are still around $640. The other sport series is about $685. While we're on it, helmets on SafeRacer.com look to start in the $170 range but typically several hundred to even $1500.

Not sure why I felt the need to point out the cost of these things, except that I recall shopping around for them before (we're still wanting to get a low-budget racing thing going) and we kinda gasped at the cost of these things.
