(Edit: I just noticed you're in the UK so my USD prices don't really apply to you but they'll still give you an idea of the cost of each bass relative to each other.)
The newer Squier basses are *really* not as bad as Squiers of years past. The 2010 and up models were improved considerably in fit and finish compared to older ones and for $300 you can't go wrong. This is a low end bass though all things considered. I don't gig, I just jam with a few friends and make noise in my living room. Value for money? Go for the Squier Jazz Bass or Precision Bass, both are $300. The factory nut was junk and buzzed on the A string. There was also a buzz coming from the original bridge and that's one of the reasons I replaced it with the HMV bridge.
If you gave me $600 and told me to go find a nice mid-range bass I'd immediately go buy a Schecter Stiletto Custom-4 in Vampyre Satin,
as seen here. MSRP is $699 but they can be found for less than that. The one I had my eye on at Best Buy was $549.
Cost no consideration?
A MusicMan Stingray. I can't explain the logic behind a $1500 bass, but go to Guitar Center and play one and you'll immediately understand.
