Are you kidding?
Shanghai based manufacturer Geely, renowned for "clones" on other cars, have come up with a new saloon.

Anyone notice a certain similarity with a class-leading saloon?

And for comparison...

No they look nothing alike, thoe two Audi pic's at the top are instantly recognisable compared to that Geely at the bottom.

Seriously, they might have bothered to change the bonnet lines.

The nose is ok - shame that rest of it looks like something that came out of Poland in the 80's

Really?

I thought the side profile had a look of Korean budget saloon about it.

 Ditto. Harsh but true. 👍

So what's it called? The 4A? Available with Brattro? Does it come with a fake Rolex in the welcome packet?

I can see it now, the lone car designer gets out his biro and a sheet of tracing paper, and begins!

The directors see the drawing and nod vigrously, they've finally got something to compete with the Germans! ;)

Will Nissan, Hyundai and Toyota ever cotton on to this?

Yes. Somebody please set off a thousand corrosive grenades in their factory(ies).

It's brilliant. They must be doing something amazing not to get sued. Unless everyone has realised that they are not even competition.

The X-trail one is best 👍

They effectively can't be sued. That's because pretty most of China's copy cat automakers are in some way shape or form, owned or controlled by the State. The chances of anyone successfully suing China is probably slight less likely than the chances of me personally verifying that Tyra Banks' breasts are indeed real.

And China's government protects intellectual property rights about as vigorously as Michael Moore supports the NRA.

In addition, most automakers are too busy falling over themselves trying to get in bed with the Communist Party so they can tap the fastest growing auto market in the world. So what's a little imitation amoungst friends anyway, right?

plus, it's the same case as Japanese automakers copying US designs (not only automotive) in the sixties and seventies

I don't get why people care so much. The cars will be sold in China, but it's still just China, which is just demonstrating its corruptness. Those designs will not be allowed here in the United States, or in any other major market or anyplace that counts.

Exactly. And, even if they were sold in other markets, just simply don't buy the car if you don't like it.

I wonder if it has a line down the middle and breaks within 2-4 days...

Even me, a guy that gets a little defensive when it comes to Chinese cars, think this is not right... at all.

They just don't want to hire any designers, it has nothing to do with human resourse though...

That company NEEDS to be bankrupt...

Although the Japanese did copy American auto designs when they started out... they weren't carbon copies. They followed the current trends slavishly, which led to a lot of their cars looking like popular American and European models. At least they hired designers for their cars.

These cars weren't so much designed as... traced.

Like the X-Trail copy, though.

Why, just why do they copy other peoples cars, tweaking them a little by making them "90's" style and put them on sale?

Without going to far, the last generation Mitsubishi Galant looks suspiciously alike to the BMW 3 Series... anyhow, I'm with NSX-R, it's a matter of laziness in not wanting to hire designers. Just take something that's good and copy it... that's the whole basis of Chinese manufacture. Look at their other products. They'll most likely take the same name and just change one or two letters in it, but keep using the same fonts.

X-Tera will probably be one of them. Maybe Lan Cruizer... and so on.

Look guys the average person in china is very poor. So this company just makes extremly cheap knockoffs. They have been doing it for decades with motorbikes already. They dont hire designers because its not cost effective. The person that buys these cars doesnt earn enough to be able to demand something beautiful.

It doesn't particularly matter if the car is ugly as sin, just as long as it's original.
