HDR photos

Here's one of the Red Bull X1 at it's home.

Here's my attempt. Been playing around with PhotoMatix and getting a feel for things.

I agree in that is perhaps the best looking picture in the thread, but its dynamic range is not very wide... there are some parts of the photo that are pitch black (tires, front grid). But great photo anyway!

I will certainly not be coming to the defense of the claim that my image is the best-looking in the thread (though I'm grateful for the compliment).

However, I thought I'd at least say that it was my intention not to have an overly broad dynamic range in this image, as I was going for a far more realistic look than the usual HDR. In fact, the pitch black on the tires was a great deal of work for me - had to mask in a levels adjustment layer in order to get them that way!

Here's my next contribution to the HDR photo thread - another one with limited dynamic range, I'm sorry to say... but with the same intention of subtle HDR effects.

Good afternoon GTplanet, I've been playing with photomatix a bit (not so much cause i've been ill)

This is my first HDR

OK, well I saw what some of you guys have been able to do with this and was amazed, so I tried it myself. Here is my very first attempt, but it doesn't look all that great. Does anyone have any tips for me, maybe I'm doing something wrong? It would be greatly appreciated.

It just takes some time to understand what the various settings mean when it comes to tonemapping your images. I don't know which HDR application you're using (Photomatix is the gold standard, IMHO), but there are usually sites - official or otherwise - that help you understand the various sliders and adjustments. Keep trying!! 👍

I got Photomatix Pro v3 (v4 wouldn't work on my PC) and have been using that. For now I've just been playing with the sliders and choosing what looks best, and I know what most of them are from my work in Photoshop for graphic design, but this is a totally new thing and so far I'm liking how it's turned out.

That Camaro is gorgeous but I really, REALLY like this one. I love how you can see the reflection of the Christmas lights on the rim. Easily my fav.👍

Finally getting a feel for using photomatix. Here's another HDR of my pimped out Fiat 500. I'm quite pleased with this one.

Just used exposure bracketing to bring out the detail in the clouds mostly...very subtle HDR.

Lovin' the more natural look myself, pixeljunkynz - a couple of fine examples you've posted. I especially like the second shot - great sense of motion, nice composition, and no blown-out detail in the clouds.

I took 3 photos, 0.0 ev, +3 ev and -3 ev, saved them all and put them on my mac but when i open them in photomatix they are corrupt, is there anything i need to do when i am taking the photos to make them readable in photomatix? they open perfect in photoshop etc...

If you can open them in photoshop, trying saving them out as tif files then loading the tifs into photomatix.

Where is it doctored? I'm not disagreeing, I just want to know because I can never really tell.

And yes, that picture is one of the best I've seen.
