I have a Magnavox 51" TV I bought just for GT4 and every time I hook it up to the HD componet jacks I get a scrolling screen with slanted bars at a 45 degree angle.

I set the PS2 to progressive and I can now see movies in 480p but when I boot up a game (any game) I get the messed up screen...

I even when to Frys to see if there was some kind of converter but they say no such thing exists (the assumption was based on the screen destortion)

My TV model number is 51MP392H - Does anyone else have this TV? Also, I'm using monster componet cables.

Any help at all would be most appriciated

Try this, boot ps2 with no disc inserted. Goto component output option in menu and change output from RGB to Pb,Yb,Pr or something of the sorts. I think that is what your issue is.

Can anyone by chance tell me how much of a differance 1080i makes? I pick up my HDTV on friday (Phillips 27 Inch) Im really excited to see HD on my games on my TV :)

It's a big big difference over the regular video.

noticable diff over s-video.

over component jacks, it's not really a LOT different between 480p and 1080i, in fact, I prefere 480p, as I have a 4x3 tv, and you see the jaggies less.

our HD set up is great (60" SONY) OEM Sony S-video cable to the tv = no probs

rjcc, is there a converter I could get to support 480i with the componet jacks??? I have tried everything unless there is a converter. I'm a little supprised I'm the only one haveing this issue....

snowden - I'm not sure what people do in that situation, I know that that was the reason microsoft included in one of the xbox updates, a way to make the dashboard appear in 480p, because people were having that same problem, my tv isn't like that, hopefully someone here knows a workaround.

christmas - I dunno, I have the cheap component cables for my ps2 (the mad catz ones), and progressive scan dvd's and games look great. I've switched thme out with the sony brand ones and noticed no difference, and I tried monster HD cables on my xbox as opposed to the stock ones, and noticed no diff.

If you have the cash to spend on monster equipment, from what I hear, they do have the engineering to back it up, but if you only have a 27" tv, I doubt that the cost is going to be worth it for you.

I have the same problem, my slanted bars are not slanted :) they are completely vertical, moving across the screen.

Also I have a freaking big screen TV and I don't get a superb quality from the game, I am not convienced.

For those who have big screen HDTVs, what's your config on the PS2 and how did you connected to your HDTV?

I have a Hitachi 57F510 and it runs great on mine. My only complaint is I called Hitachi last night because I was concerned about switching from 480 to 108i0 between races and they said that it could hurt the lifespan of the TV.

Anyway second off if you are running component run it directly to your tv and not a reciever as it will screw up your picture no matter what type reciever you have, this info I found at avsforum.

Third make sure you have component set in your PS2 settings.

Lastly I am sorry for those who bought the monster cables they are inferior to the OEM sony ones.

In GT4, 1080i is the equivalent of turning on Antialiasing. Road, grass, and tree textures shimmer a LOT less. Not everything is improved, and actually the method they're using to simulate depth-of-field becomes more obvious, but once I've seen 1080i I can't imagine going back.

Thankfully this is on a TV that handles switching back to 480i on the Components with no problem.

I fixed it... I'm having a Mitsobishi delivered tomorrow and the Magnocrap is getting picked up on Saturdat.

Just an FYI, this is the only TV that won't work for GT4 in HD. I went to frys and they hooked up a PS2 with GT4 in nearly 15 TV's and sure enough my model was the only one we couldnt get working...

Thanks for help

and just think... at one time, 480i was the only thing Component cables were good for (before HDTV came out). Now they make TVs that have no clue what to do with 480i.

I have a 36in Sony Vega TV (Digital w/component input, but not HDTV) and am running the s-video cable the game came with. I would like to run a better set of cables to the TV, would I benefit from a set of component cables? Will GT4 show up on my TV if I run it progressive or 480i or will my TV deny it because it's not HD? All opinions/comments appreciated. Thanks!

What's this 480i people keep talking about? I thought the only options we have are 1080i and 480p. (I'm using 1080i, which I understand is supposed to be the clearest.)

480i is the standard image. 480p is progressive scan (better) and 1080i is the best (High-Def).

I beleive I've found an answer to my question in another thread. Now, another question, if my TV does have component input, but does NOT support 480p or 1080i, is there any advantage to buying component cables (if I am currently using S-Video)?

I havent been able to figure out how to play movies on my PSTWO in progressive scan, 480p. How did you enable it? Whenever I try it wont let me select the option to turn it on in the PSTWO DVD options.
I do play GT4 in 1080i; without problems, whats the deal? Games play in HD but my movies don't!
Anyone know how I can watch DVDs in progressive scan? What am I not doing?

Yes, before I bought HDTV, I switched from S-vid to component... noticeably better picture.

Good enough for me. I'll pick up a set. Too bad my TV only has 1 component input (I think) so now I'll have to switch my DVD player and PS2 when I want to watch movies (or I could just use the PS2, and let my $300 DVD player go to waste). :guilty:

If you are referring to the difference in picture quality of GT4 the statement above is fine. 480p however, can't hold a candle to true 1080i.

For those who have big screen HDTVs, what's your config on the PS2 and how did you connected to your HDTV?

Set your PS2 to Y-Pb-Pr and screen size to 16:9. Use a set of component cables between the PS2 and your TV's HD input (not a component-video only input). Select the correct option is GT4's menu, screen size 16:9 and 1080i.

If your TV's native resolution is 720p rather than 1080i, using the 480p setting in GT4 may result in a better picture.

That's just silly. I've been using a set of Monster Cable component cables with my PS2 for over two years and they provide an excellent picture.

You'll have a much better picture with your Mitsubishi than the Magnovox.

Now, another question, if my TV does have component input, but does NOT support 480p or 1080i, is there any advantage to buying component cables (if I am currently using S-Video)?

Technically you should experience a better image but it will be smaller than going from composite-->S-Video and will depend on your TV and your expectations.

My Mitsubishi WS-55411 has been ISF calibrated for 480i, 480p, and 1080i. 1080i clearly looks the best to me for GT4 even though it's being upscaled. My TV, as most HDTV's, exhibits the flicker but it will likely do no noticeable damage by the time the set itself dies. Any TV that exhibits this problem with GT4 will also do it with a cable or satellite signal when switching from HD to standard resolutions.

I urge everyone to take the 10 minutes to read the manuals of your gear so that you know the ins/outs of it. Most of the answers to your questions can be found there.

My tv's 1080i input only accepts 480i, 720p, and 1080i, whereas the 480 input accepts 480i, and 480p, the menus in gt4's 1080i mode run at 480p only so if i want to run in 1080i I have to keep switching back and forth inputs just to see the menu then switch modes and cables to see the race. It was a cool experience but now I am just permanantely running at 480p. I wish I had thought about inputs when I bought my TV (48" samsung DLP) Don't get me wrong I love my tv, but after seeing this game in 1080i it's hard to just settle.

Or buy a home theather system with multiple component inputs. I bought one two weeks ago with component video upconversion. (I'm not exactly sure what that does, but it seems to have improved the picture of all my components, no pun intended.)

To clear up something else, switching from 480-1080 will not hurt your set. It's a resolution switch nothing physical.. It's like changing channels.

While I agree with you that switching resolutions all the time can't be good for the longevity of your display, your wrong about the the component cables running through a receiver, that's the way mine are run using a Pioneer Elite 56TXi and I have no problems at all. And last of all, the Monster Cables are certainly NOT inferior to the Sony OEM cables, they just cost more and are 2 ft longer.

Please don't post false info.
