I made a thread about it, it isn't even that hard. I'm a Nürburgring noob and not a great driver, but I managed to do it 7 seconds under the gold time the 2nd time I've got to the finish line. TCS on 1, ABS on 1 and sensitivity on 7.

Not even going to attempt this without advice
Already frustrated at the prize money

It seems hard. The other guy starts 5 seconds ahead of you with a better car. He has higher top speed than you. This means that if you start the last long straight together you will lose.
First you must catch him. I catch him between Hocheichen and Quiddelbacher Hohe (that first top with the fast right hander)
The AI does not employ late braking or 'good exit' strategies. You must catch him with these.
Then you must stay far enough ahead of him that he doesn't take you out, again by driving like a maniac and defending your position with any means at your disposal. This is not fair racing - it's a fight to the death.
If you do it right you get to the final straight ahead of him. He will catch you. You will defend. He will probably get past you at the top of the hill but now we're so close to the final 3 corners (the second gear ones) and the clue is to reach those first...with late braking from 350 km/h to 30....at the last corner.....after all that driving.....BANG.

Well we'll get there eventually
It's the best race in the game I think.

So why don't you link the thread then? Otherwise your comment is useless not very helpful.

I'm a Nurburgring aficionado and consider myself competent and I'm 7 seconds off the gold. I can see the gold but I'm going to have to drive for my life to get it. Thus I'm really interested in your thread.

Here you go, there aren't real tips in the thread, it's just about me being happy that I completed it.
The hardest part for me was getting ahead of the other car as I tried to do it as soon as possible and I managed to do it after the S bend, before the right corner after which there are straights. I kept the lead until the last straight where I let the guy pass me as it doesn't help keeping him behind you with the time. In the end he finished about 5 seconds before me I'd say, but I still got my gold.

You don't have to beat the other GT, so on the final straight, allow him to go in front and you can use him to judge when to brake if you're feeling nervous.
I pass him at the same point as SirAlanClive, once you're past don't worry about blocking him, just focus on a good racing line to get the best time.
The only time you'll have to "block" is the long uphill section, but its narrow so he won't overtake unless you let him

Oh and 7:50 in a GT-40 is a very generous time, you have time for a little mess up or 2

I usually pass him where all those cones are, about 6 corners in but like the above poster says, you don't need to beat him to win. The rubberband effect is evident here as you can pull quite a lead then soon as it gets to pitch black he catches back up. Ignore him and if you find he's catching you on the long run to the finish......get out of his way, he will make contact if your taking up to much of the road and can be quite a scarey time getting your car back under control. Just be carefull on the last couple of corners if he is in front as it's the usual AI tactic of slow as hell in a corner and any kind of slight bump into his rear is race over and a restart, bad place to throw it away especially if on target.

I overtook him in first few corners, pushed like hell in first half of track and never looked back :). I remember seeing some lights in rear view mirror on the fast uphill section, but wasn't bothered by opponent at all. He cut the difference down a bit also on the last straight, but I never saw him in my mirrors. The time I got was arround 7:30, don't know the exact time now. I do love the Nordschleife and have done a lot of my laps there (from GT4 through GT5).

Point is - it is completely doable, all you need is concentrate on your line and driving. In the end, I think it's about the lap time, position is not relevant, so focus on that. Good luck

I messed up twice in the lap and still managed a 1:49.825 for gold.
As said before, do not race the other GT40, just do your lap an use him in the second to last corner to judge your breaking point :D

I'm done

Fifth time this has happened, anyone want to help me from destroying my controller?

What worked for me was being ridiculously aggressive at the start, enabling me to pass very early. Once I was in the lead I was able to concentrate on taking my ideal line. I blocked him on the last long straight until the crest of the hill, then drafted and late-braked past him at the 2nd gear turn before you get back to where the GP track starts. At that point I was focused on the time rather than my position - it was only luck that I came in first. But the time was good enough.

Please note that being ridiculously aggressive at the start translated to at least 5 restarts within the first mile of the track.

I trundled around quite conservatively on my first lap as the car felt like it was on the edge pretty much everywhere.
I came home with an 8:01 - 11 seconds off gold :(
The only way to knock off 11 seconds is to drive much faster (genius huh ?).
So next lap out I gave it the absolute berries, throwing caution to the wind, letting the tail slide where it may... and in fact there is quite a lot of latent grip in this car/tyre combo .. so much so that I cracked a 7:31 with my new mindset.
So the moral of the story is don't dilly-dally, thrash the bejesus out of the old girl and you will make the time comfortably.
I got past the GT before the first set of cones (T4), left him, then later it passed me on the long straight to home. I let it pass to use the slipstream, then managed to pass it again on the final right turn before the line, so got a win as well.
