Help with long drifts

If you have plenty of power and a well-balanced car, just keep giving it more throttle.
 
of course ebrake doesnt work.... its a brake - meaning it SLOWS YOU DOWN

it's in the lsd settings. I'd start by lowering the initial torque slightly, and also the LSD accel settings.
Power helps, but isnt required in a well setup,a nd balanced car. The long turn at Apricot Hill can easily be completed in a sub 250hp car.

also, try searching this topic for additional clues. It's a very common problem for new drifters to encounter and there have been many threads on it in the past.

edit: also keep in mind that going for too much angle will cause you to lose speed as well. Your drift angle has to be appropriate for the length of the corner.... otherwise you get one of those 'stopping drifts'

But... With empysis on the angle maintenance... I still struggle with long drifts every now and then, but the key is to keep a shallow angle for most of the turn and only on the exit increase it...

The other thing (and you'll hear this a lot here) is PRACTICE, PRACTICE and MORE PRACTICE!!!
 
practise, practise and pratcise!!! thats what they say to me. Ive started drifting in GT4 today btw... I think its very hard. 5 times harder than in GT3! but will keep practise! :ouch:
 
1 more vote for less angle, at least on entry. Also, don't floor it. Keep the throttle low so that you're just spinning the rear, and use countersteering or slight ups and downs on the throttle to maintain angle.

When taking long bends I also find it useful to make very slight sawing motions INWARDS with the wheel to help maintain the angle, or to increase it slightly.

The practice bit is needed to find out just how much steering/throttle you should give it, and how much to modulate that to control and adjust your angle. Judging your angle and what to do with it is also learned gradually, if you overcook it on the entry it's a million times harder to make it through the corner in one drift. I generally find that increasing the angle is a lot easier than decreasing it and still keep going sideways.

Speaking of decreasing angle, any tips for the first double right on midfield 1? I just can't do it and it bugs me.. Most of the time I just regain grip at the outside clipping point (middle, on the short straight). Taking it reversed is cake, but on Normal it's damn impossible :(

I can help here, cos I nail this every time!!!

Generally the first left is a 5,4 gear corner depending on the car. In my case it's a 5 gear corner... What I do is feint heavily in 5th gear into the corner, then maintain the drift throught the first left (you say you have no problem with this part, which makes the next part easy) Then when I get closer to the second left 3rd gear, I brake quiet hard (normal brakes). this shift the weight of my drift even more and gives me even more angle.. plus is slows me down enough to take the 3rd gear left... Simple!!!

well the part I have problems with is keeping angle out of the first bend while going in the right direction, ie following the short straight cause the track is too narrow to take the whole thing in one arc :\

the game doesnt allow for positive camber (b/c it's utterly useless). Any camber you put on the car will be negative camber in GT4, meaning the top of the wheel is pulled inwards, the bottom pushed outwards from the center of the car.
 
Some D1 guys use positive camber at tracks like Irwindale. NASCAR also uses positive camber and there are probably other motorsports that use it as well.
 
positive camber? That's gotta suck. The only thing ive known it to do is make you slide more.(usefull in d1, but Nascar?)
 
For banked ovals, the inside wheels will have positive camber, the outside negative to keep the wheels planted in the bends... would work for Nascar since they're only turning one way anyway....

OK, perhaps these pics below will help you with your line... These are taken on the same drift!!!

OK, so here I'm doing roughly 180km/h when the corner should be taked at around 150km/h, but I've feinted heavily and have good enough angle to maintain that speed sideways... You need to be drifting near the apex of turn 1 in order to not go off the outside of the track...


Now I'm slowing down (by sliding) and getting ready to break for the 3rd gear left.


Same pic different angle, it's at this point that you want to get on the breaks... I'm doing roughyl 140km/h here, still sideways, and the corner requires roughly 110km/h so I brake hard... this slows me to that speed and increases my angle for the tighter bend...


and this is the end result, a clean 3rd gear left hander to end it off...


Now here's another seperate drift that shows a good smoke trail about midway through the 2nd turn, so you can see how the drift needs to be kept all the way round..

i already know how to drift in the 1 long turn in apricot hill thanks to vixen but the long U turn in autumn ring is troubling me.
 
OK, sorry for jacking your thread a bit, but the reply above was for ske... lol...

I can do the 270 loop @ Autumn Ring downhill, Uphill I haven't got right yet...

I'll give it a bash when I get time and try to post pics and explanations similar to what I did for ske... K!

That's not the turn I was having problems with ;)

I'm talking about the very first double right after the starting line on MIDFIELD normal, which has a pretty sharp first right, short straight into a shallow right (sort of like taking Apricot turn 1+2 backwards)

Oh well, in that case.... good luck,, hehehe... Since you can't really accelerate while drifting in GT4 (well I can't) I find it hard to do those two in one sideways motion... (it's not decreasing angle as you said earlier on the thread, it's increasing angle)...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think GT4's physics allow you to accelerate while drifting....

I usually come out of turn 1 (midfield now) and manji left slightly then hit turn 2... Problem is it's slightly uphill after turn 1, so you slow down hectically...
 
The best thing to do for that U turn is to initiate late, then pull your initiation back further and further. So, for starters you should actually be in the corner when you kick it out.

Hmm isn't the radius decreasing when the first turn is sharper than the second? :dunce:

I saw someone do that double apex in a vid recently (I've actually made it myself, on accident and very messy though), so it's quite possible to do.. it's just the correct approach that keeps eluding me, especially since I want to be drifting as I enter the first turn and not take the cheap option of semi grip then kick it out at the first apex.

And I find that accelerating or at least holding constant speed while drifting is quite possible if the angle is low enough. I can't do it with the d-pad, but it seems easy enough now that I'm using a wheel.

Anyway, this thread has been hijacked enough :P I'd make some kind of specific corner technique thread, but I doubt it'd stay open for long :indiff:
 
Actually, if you look at the map, that corner is a constant radius. The thing that makes it tricky is controlling your speed since it's up/down hill. When going downhill there is a clear clipping point, but going uphill you need to maintain your speed so the outside line is your best bet.

Btw, you can accelerate while drifting in GT4.
