I just found out that this car has a torsion beam rear suspension.

Really Honda?

It is a European Civic... after all. :lol:

If it can do the time, I'm not all that bothered. Of course, one wonders how ungodly stiff the rear suspension is, in order to keep that from being a big problem.

Looking at the video, it's probably pretty damn stiff.

But then again it does have adjustable dampers so it could soften up quite a lot.

That was the single most annoying thing in my '00 Sentra, I absolutely hated it. They might be ok for handling, but ride quality suffers. I bet with as stiff as this thing is, it's reasonably horrible.

Adjustable dampers may help a lot as I said earlier before.

And apparently this new Type R Turbo has been making impression to the press according the first reviews. Low 5-second 0-60 it pretty good achievement for FWD hot hatch.

That looks so much better than the hatchback. Gets rid of the terrible rear wing.

Weird how much trouble he's having shifting. Can only assume it's a problem with that individual car, and I think it's probably harmed the lap time somewhat - I'm not too familiar with what constitutes a good lap around Tsukuba, but looking at a few websites which list laps there it's both a little slower than that model is capable of in someone else's hands (1:07.40 apparently) but also slower than stuff like the Megane Trophy R by about 1.5sec. The Megane is mega on a circuit, and power doesn't matter as much on a smallish track, but I'd have expected the Type R to get closer.

@homeforsummer

Based on lap times set by Best Motoring, 1:07 is not bad. It's getting in close range of NSX Type Rs, Skyline GT-Rs, RX-7s, and a few other of the "280 hp" Japanese sports cars which varied from around 1:04 to 1:06 depending on weather and atmospheric conditions. Considering the Civic is FWD, I think it's time is fairly good. If you dial out Gan-san's shifting errors as well, I feel that it can nudge the 1:06 range, which would be very good.

Here's a BM video featuring the old DC5 Type R and AP1 S2000, both of which lapped in 1:09:
