As I pointed out earlier, what IS a Japanese car? Or an American car for that matter.

There are, essentially, only 6 major car companies on the planet - sure there are a number of smaller independants, but between them they account for <1% of global sales.

Toyota is the largest independant Japanese maker. Mitsubishi have connections with Daimler-Chrysler. Mazda are controlled by Ford. Nissan have links to Renault (very heavy links, as it happens). Honda get by okay - but have historic links with Rover (now MG Rover, but previously owned by BMW)... You know the game "Six degrees of Kevin Bacon"? It's possible with cars too. I don't know much about American cars, but I'd bet you can link any other car on Earth to your Blazer in six or less moves.

I try to judge each car on it's design and merits, rather than any other factors (like manufacturing company or country of origin).

If there was a japanese car I thought was good good then I'd say it. Just like I really like the G35 and the 2nd gen Eclipses. I also thin that the old Datsuns are some of the coolest cars around.

But to go as far as call me racist, that pisses me off. You know what I mean?

I hope BlazinXtreme never buys a Chrysler, because I'd say about 20% on average of the parts on all Chryslers, Dodges, Jeeps, Plymouths, or Eagles was built by Mitsubishi.

Imagine substituting the "N" word (the one that rhymes with "bigger") into the sentence instead. Or any one of hundreds of other terms like that. Can you see how it might cause offence? It really IS a racist term - okay so it's easier to type, but there are a few three letter words I can think of that are easier to type than "black person", and I wouldn't dream of using them. Ever.

Do you have any idea how much gas cost in Japan? Of course you dont. My friend said it cost around 4$ american dollar a gallon. Thats alot, and with a 5.0L V8 think how much you will have to pay...

Very true, I hate people who dismiss a car because it's made by such and such manufacturer. It's like the Mazda 6, I heard people saying 'The mazda 6 is great barring the engine' which is the same V6 duratec used in the new mondeo (which is a great car). So just because it's got a ford engine people dismiss it. As for 5.0 litre V8's, yeah i'd love to own a car with a huge engine. But it would be impractical for most people in Europe, paying for fuel, repairs and not to mention driving something like that on Londons awesome (sarcasm) roads. Yet car imported from Japan are cheap (You can pick up a secondhand R32 Gt-R for about £9000) and have fairly decent performance, yes not earth shattering but decent. There is very little interest in the 1/4 mile in Europe (ok fine, one of my friends dad's owns a ford capri with a 502 I think chevy engine that he takes to santa pod, but the scene is no way as popular as America/Australlia) so huge amounts of power and torque isn't really essential. I'd love to see American cars like the SRT4 over here, but that is unlikely because Chrysler don't have much of a hold over the European market.

I'm not particularly fussed about power, that's why my next car is going to be a MK-I MR-2, which is RWD and has been noted as a fun car to drive. I was thinking maybe an older Ford Escort, but seeing as I already drive a fairly old one it would be more trouble than it's worth.

Anyways gas in the Southwest is almost 3 dollars a gallon and people still drive Excursions there. I mean its your choice to buy an auto with that kinda mileage.

WOW! 3 Dollar a gallon thats crazy. Here in TN its around 1.79 a gallon thats pretty fair if you ask me compared to the southwest.

In the UK, the average petrol (gas... whatever) price is £3.58 a gallon, or just about $5.20 a gallon. Oh, and our gallons are smaller than yours, which makes the comparison even more ridiculous.

My dad's Ford Explorer (when he had one...) turned 20mpg at best, from a 19 gallon tank. That's a range of 380 miles. And after those 380 miles you're looking at nearly $100 to fill up again. Average weekly mileage in the UK is 230 miles or so (12k a year) - so that's $3000 in petrol alone in one year. No ******g thanks!

He sold it and got a Mazda MX-3 V6. Which he sold (to me) and got a diesel Ford Focus Estate (TDCi). He gets nearly 60mpg out of it.

I haven't bought petrol for 3 months, because it's cheaper and less stressfull to take the train to work.

Average price at the pump for Unleaded is 78.9p per litre.

The train is cheaper? Not many! I paid £3,100 for a 12 month season ticket to London from K*nt. AND I still had to drive to the station of a morning. AND pay for parking.

Roughly 85% of our petrol prices goes straight to the Exchequer.

But we also get a higher standard Octane fuel than Americans do. Our normal unleaded is 95 Octane, with Super-Unleaded, for higher performance cars, at 97 Octane. I believe 88 Octane is normal Stateside?


Conversion factors:
1 Imperial Gallon = 4.546 Litres
1 US Gallon = 3.785 Liters
Current Exchange Rate (as 6pm GMT 18/1/04)
US$1.81 = 1 £UK
0.54 £UK = 1 US$

So 78.9p/litre becomes £3.58/gallon (Imp) or £2.99/gallon (US) - or $6.48/gallon (Imp) or $5.41/gallon (US). Ouch!
