No idea what that can be. Is it a little horsie on the hood?

Yes, it's a prototype. However the car bearing the same name did make production.

The picture I posted was a Rambler Tarpon, not a Marlin. (according to the site anyway) It was close enough for a correct answer though.

Just looked a little harder and there's hardly (if any) difference at the back.
 
The Tarpon might have been the 6-cylinder version of the V8 Marlin.
