how do you change your psn id?

This is your online PSN name, right? If there is a way to change it, I'm not aware of it. Recently, I just created another one though, just for gtplanet(with "GTP_" in front).

But you can create new accounts.

Create a new user (Users-->Create new), and go to the "Sign up for PS Network" option under PS network (I'm assuming you already know how to set it up) and create it with the desired name, but you will need a different e-mail address than your other account (Setting up one on Gmail is really quick)

If I do that, all my gamesave data is gone. I've put in way too much time at GTP to start all over again.

You can just copy your save game date to the new acount.

and you don't need a new email as such, you just need another, you can swap your email to the new email on your old account if you have no intention of using the email and account fully, then sign up your new ID on your normal email.

I've done a bit of looking around and I don't think it's possible. I was hoping it would be, because I don't have the need for two accounts anymore and the account I want to keep is a sub-account.

Nothing, except that the games, etc. you downloaded using your master account would be unplayable.
