How do you all feel about using drivers aids, specifically ASM understeer in order to drift?

I've noticed a good amount of settings in the Depot have asm understeer at 10 or above. I think it pretty much takes the technique away from the driver and lets the computer/car do the majority of the work.

I'd really like to hear your opinions on this. I know some have been scattered throughout this forum, but none in a focused thread. So what do you think?

The ONLY aid I use is the occasional TCS tweaking when driving 7-1000+hp cars that just can't gain traction.

I just realized that isn't exactly an answer, but you get my drift. [/pun]

IMHO I think using driving aids in general is a bit weak... For drifting I usually go for the pure drivers feeling. No need for electronic messing, it just doesn't feel right!
Racing at high speeds is another story, but for drifting I'd definately choose no aids but N1 tyres and a little suspension tweaking.

When i first started drifting i did use aids i posted a thread with settings and i beilieve a few guys said using the aids is just letting the computer the work and there is no real tecnique involved. and i also find it more gratifying when u acomplish a drift.

Driving Aids = 👎
They are bad and wrong. They are badong.

Lol. That is from Kung Pow Enter The Fist...badong LMAO what a word. Well my opinion on driving aids is that it is a good thing to start learning with. I will admit I started to learn how to drift with understeer at 10. Then afterwards when I got better (still am though) I decided to go down to 5 then just plain ol no driving aids. So I would have to say if you want to learn how to drift a little easier try understeer at 10 then work your way down and you will get used to it.

So basically aids are good to help learning with but not to straight up drive with. Sorry.

I never use any of the driving aids. I'm one of those that doesn't like the driving aids. It really does hinder your potential, and slows the learning process. The same goes for mis-matching tires, both crutches for weak technique. Instead of manipulating the actions of the car, you're more just making it easier for it to loose traction in the rear rather than actually "controlling a forced movement" and applying good technique.

ASM Understeer is weaksauce... 👎

me
Drifting with ASM Understeer on is like riding a bike with training wheels
thats my thoughts posted some while ago in the drift reference.
I guess its an individuals choice if or not to use the aids, or settings posted in the depot that mention the use of aids.

however:
I will not regard drifters using aids as being particularly skilled.
I hold the view that settings with aids are a cheap way of masking a flawed suspension and drivetrain setup. I dont believe any car in the game requires aids to drift, with the possible exception of FF's (if you want to call that drifting).

I'd rather members post just a few good settings in the depot without driver aids, than post 18 settings per day with the ASM cranked. :indiff:

ASM Understeer is like carrying a gun. Sure, it makes you look good and feel big, but without it, you couldn't take candy from an ant.
Learnin to drift without it will make you able to always kick that ants thorax, and go home happy with his candy every time. 👍

ASM?

I don't even like to modify my cars when I drift.

Makes me feel hardcore.

Oh, I consider FF drifting real, it just requires different techniques, helps to have good settings...and oh...it helps to rock a lot.

I personally find it demeaning when I see someone's video with the ASM flashing like hell.

lol Onikaze, ...such a StrongBad type attitude

Most people use ASM for 4wd cars, and Some use TCS for 1000hp+ cars to keep it from burning out at the start (or the supra at 6 gear going 50mp...)

I have no problems with that.. But for a nice EZ car like uh.. Altezza... s14,s15 etc.. NO need for ASM or TCS

Like what someone already said, using the ASM oversteer aids is like driving with training wheels. I think the ASM oversteer aid can be good to help train you and build your confidence so you know what you should be capable of doing. But if you seek drifting because you want a challenge and want to understand more about technique, then do yourself a favor and turn it off. ASM should not be allow in GTPDC.

one quick comment that I know was discussed a while back. ASM understeer will help you initiate the drift, but once you are sideways, if you try and countersteer, your car will essentially "think" that it is understeering, and the ASM understeer will pull you out of the drift, not hold the car at the angle you want. I have not tested this theory at all but it is what I assume would happen.

thats why you see all the best drifters can hold long graceful angles with countersteer....they dont have the ASM working against them.

I really don't care... Its there so why dont you use it...
people are different therefore between the people their techniques are different.. ya know what I'm tryin' to say?
I think it make the drifts look better cause your able to get of an angle through out the drift... :D

thats just my 2 cents

i agree with whoever said AIDS should be banned in GTPC/DC's as they are to show driver skill, not the lack of by using aids. i dont use aids, and i can prob drift better than most anyone using them. i feel they are not needed at any point in drifting. not when you being, not anytime. if you want to learn to drift, start off right using no aids and same tires all around.
i hate the fact that 90% of the settings in the depot have aids turned on.

I wouldn't say ban it even though I don't like it either. I'd say just knock down the control and style points. There would be no better motivation for someone than loosing because they never took the time to learn w/o driving aids. Inspire learning with a swift kick to the nuts...

huh, huh...You said "swift"

USE AIDS TO TRAIN or whatever....if you dun want to learn it yourself....but i won't drift with anyone that has em on...call me cocky...but the only aid u need is the accelerator!

you might wanna change that to crotch, since we do have at least one female here...

Or are working on becoming one... 👍

"I really don't care... Its there so why dont you use it..." I like it. :)

I say aids off but if the person likes understeer or oversteer on, hey it's their style and I support ya. :)

ok i understand your logic for this but i would strongly recomend turning these aids off its been said many times before and i know its true because i started drifting with the aids on. And i thought it was easy nothing to it but when i turned them off boy its a whole different story much more chalenging.
So maybe if you do use aids once you have matered drifting using them try turning them off and see the change in the learning curve you will be suprised.
