A little clarification is needed here, unless
I'm the one who is confused:
LOW gearing, also called 'short' gearing, is made for acceleration. In other words, the engine turns more revolutions to turn the wheels at a given rate. This limits top speed because the engine redlines at a lower mph number. On the auto trans setting this would also be called 'close'.
HIGH gearing, also called 'tall' gearing, is made for top speed. The engine turns fewer revolutions to turn the wheels at a given rate. This helps top speed, but hurts acceleration. This is 'wide' on the auto trans setting.
However, it is possible with the race transmission to set the gears to be close, and then make the final drive ratio taller for maximum top speed. Or to set the gears wide, and then make the final drive ratio shorter for acceleration. Why you would do this, I don't know, but you could.
Sorry if this is like elementary school, but it seems that a number of people in this thread are using 'low' incorrectly.
