How much difference does a wheel make

A lot. It's like having ten times more control because the travel of the input devices is ten times larger. Accel pedal is 3 inches of travel and maybe 10-20 steps of input. Controller
1/4 inch of travel and maybe 2-4 steps of input. Wheel 8-20 inches of travel and almost infinitely more steps of adjustment/input than an analog stick at 1/2 inch. Its all or nothing with remotes more or less. It's why the physics and handling Characters are different for different input devices.

I used a DS3 from when I picked up my preorder until early October, when I got myself a G27. I can vouch for the fact that the learning curve is wicked, but its worth it. Game is much more enjoyable and I'm getting really good with it.

The quality of the driving in lobbies has definitely improved as more and more people are transitioning to wheels. I see less and less people in front of me on controllers twitching about. I remember when the game 1st launched and I felt like the best driver in the world because I was already on a wheel and had experience from prev gen's. People are catching on to the wheel quick and getting in to high end precision wheels now. As a user with a son who is forced to use the pad and share the wheel. I can promise you the wheel is faster. I am looking for a second.

G27 + wheelstandpro = AU$700
Driving the SLS AMG on the Nurburgring with steering wheel = priceless

Dumb question: Do any of the wheels available for GT5 have Paddle Shifting?

Pretty much all wheels have paddle shifting available. Even my MOMO that isnt supported can use paddle shifters, mainly because the actual gear stick doesbt work with GT5.
Chances are if it has paddles, they will work.

Really? You can't use an H Shifter with a clutch in GT5? I'm a bit surprised.

I know the DFGT doesn't, but you can buy paddles for it online for another $30 or so. Haven't done it myself but I've heard good things about it.

You can with the G27, I think he was referring to the MOMO wheel.

I have always used the joypad, and just accept that I'll be pushed around on line and 3-4 secs a lap slower most of the time. I can keep up in road cars on road tyres, but I don't stand a chance in race cars, and I have big problems driving the FormulaGT with the pad. But no space for a wheel, so I get on with it, but having a wheel makes a BIG difference.

Dont feel like you have to be slower with the pad, I have raced many people online who use it and are really fast. I always mention my friends 6.07 lap on Nurburg 24 hour track in the Formula GT. I managed a 6.18 with the wheel, try it :D

Thanks for all the advice GTP'ers but the original post is VERY old now :D
Keep commenting if you think it will help other people but after using a wheel for months now I am very comfortable and successful with it 👍

Yeah thats what I was saying. At the moment I am using the MOMO Racing wheel and the only way to shift is by using the paddles, the stick shifter isnt button mapped for GT5.

I was thinking about getting the mig welder out and making some kind of frame for it. Just to keep it steady, lots of examples online including one for £1500!
Oh and i already have fun with the DS3, dont mind admitting im looking for precision (and better lap times). Id like to compare with a good wheel racer but maybe not publicly in case my lap times show me up lol

If you can weld, spend a couple of bucks on some iron, a seat, and some hardware and you are set. I built this in a couple of hours and it has really helped me get my lap times down. I tried other styles, but they all seemed to move around or were unstable and rocked back and forth, etc, so I built one where everything is tied into the seat to stabalize the whole thing.

I am not the fastest guy around but a lot faster than I was or could ever be with the DS3

I currently race with a ds3 and was hoping that some drivers who use quality racing wheels could tell me if their laptimes got better using a wheel.
I do ok with the ds3 but while i can see the racing line i want i cant always follow it perfectly.
Cheers in advance.

It's a driving sim-Get a wheel!

I used the ds3 for the first 5 weeks when I bought the game on release day. Not happy with my times/feel of the cars etc. Endurance races with the ds3? I don't think so.

Got the DFGT and never looked back. Got the G27 now. So sweet!

Thanks grazbro but look at the date on the OP, I have had a wheel for a good while now.
DFGT helped me win my FGT championship and I do ok in other races online now too.

Used to own a G27 and it was certainly so much more fun and precise over the DS3. However, sometimes I can be more accurate on the DS3 for some strange reason and I actually obtained my license using the DS3 only. :yuck:
