I think it's ugly inside and out. It has a lot of potential in the looks department, though. The shape is good, but the features are not.

Also, that gauge cluster looks mighty strange and the steering wheel even looks off-center.

Hopefully they'll come out with a better flavor for their next model. I think the Genesis sedan is far better.

it's not bad, but I don't think "kickass" is the right word.

It's nice but that grill needs to be about 2 inches wider eitherside.

For those of you who are "nitpicking" lets take into account that this IS KOREAN. Honestly, this--for a former designless country--is just about as good as you can get. I mean it looks better than anything Toyota has right now--and I'm serious. The Genesis saloon and coupe are flatout better than Toyota. Score. If they keep the FWD Tiburon I hope they go smaller and lighter with a turbo 4cyl. It would be an epic Honda competitor.

Apparently they want to start drifting it early...

I'm still not convinced that its better than the Mustang, but its growing on me...

You know my love affair with the 2005-2008 Mustang GT, this could honestly be a VERY close second to it if I drive one and like it. The only thing that will ever knock the Mustang GT off my love affair list is if something comes along and SOUNDS better.

Nothing on the market in this class sounds as good as this:

NOTHING.

True, but better design does not = good. Not in my eyes, at least.

its got irs. so its already better than a mustang.

Look everyone, the Artist is calling for conformity and apparently can't recognize camera lens distortion when he sees it! Atta boy, Artist.

The Mustang does very well with what it has, but in the end an independent setup will always be better for handling and ride comfort.

well there you go. i couldnt care less if this thing can compete with a mustang in a straight line. but how does it match up against a Z or even a 335 coupe through the twisties.

Are you sure about that, JCE? I was under the impression that much of Korean car designs are outsourced, from Europe.

I think both the coupe and sedan borrows little too much from the Japanese and the European counterparts, but if Hyundai designed these cars on their own, I'd be really impressed.

P.S. I'm digging the cockpit. 👍

FAIL.

At this point, I remind everyone that it is of course beating a dead horse to bring this up and of course that we have settled this arguement numerous times before; The IRS setup is of course behind the times and should have been replaced... That being said, Ford has done a good job of making it cheap, surprisingly functional, and in the end the Mustang remains an excellent car for the money.

Either way: For $27,000 you've got a lot of great choices out there for a high-performance coupe.

I agree with YSSMAN. Yes, the live axle is holding the Mustang back, but it really doesn't come into play until you slap 500 horses to it and try and pass it off as a Corvette competitor. Up until that point, the Mustang is prefectly adequate at handling for its price point. Its no SVT Cobra, but I don't think anyone was expecting it to be.

I was under the impression it was entering one of the American drift series this year. Can't remember where I heard that (probably Autoblog), but it would be an interesting publicity stunt. Then we'd get to hear what it sounds like too.

Yeah, conform to something that looks attractive, please.

Thank you for having a brain. I'm so tired of the LRA vs IRS comments about the Mustang...especially and specifically the V6/GT models.

Don't a lot of IRS suspensions get camber problems which require an adjustment kit too? Main reason I'm glad my Ute has LRA. Cheaper.

I only have a problem with the LRA when they get into the upper level Mustangs (notably the Shelby GT, because no one with half a brain really thought the GT500 would be anything but a straight line tool no matter what suspension it had in it). On the GT and V6 models it is perfectly adequate for what it is called upon to do.
The fact that the Mustang hangs so close to the theoretically far better in every way 350Z tells you that Ford must have done something right with the suspension tuning, and people who harp on the lower level Mustangs simply because it has LRA need something better to spend their time on.

No matter how good a car this is… it still has a Hyundai badge on it. And I know in the recent few years they’ve slowly been picking up their game (It’s that old Excel which really makes me angry ), but I believe you will still look like an idiot driving a Genesis Coupe.

I’ve gotta say though, it doesn’t look all that bad. I think the front grill could be a bit wider (as many said), and the wheels in this picture look rather cheap (I wouldn’t be surprised if a simple clean of degreaser chemical would destroy them in one hit, like they do in all other Korean-built cars).
I don’t know… if you want a good-looking car with a V8 and RWD, get a Mustang, Commodore, or anything you can get in Europe IMO.

I must disagree, I think this car might even demand respect. It's just so cool, an when you think about it Hyundai are disliked by the "ricer" community which only improves company image. This car will have a true enthusiast fan base I think, and will be popular like any American or European or Australian car.

PS- The more I think about it the more I want this car  (After I buy a Camaro, a Commodore/Ute, and a number of other GM cars)

Well maybe I would like it better if Hyundai made a performance arm… or if they placed the coupe under another manufacturer all together (Similar to the relation between Lotus and Proton). Sounds a bit silly and expensive… but then it would probably make it a cool car. That nice leather interior looks wrong with a Hyundai badge… it’s really just the badge I’m bickering on about.

Times change my friend. I'm sure you will come good to Hyundai, well better than now anyway :sly: They will never replace anything American or Australian that's half decent. But I will now have a lot of respect and like for Hyundai too.

+1 And you want to know what's even more perfect ammo against the Shelby GT-C? In the April issue of Motor Trend they dyno'd several Mustang models to show their stock wheel horsepower...and the results are *ahem* shocking.

Let me post them until someone can scan it for me. Its on page 69.

Model - stock crank power - wheel power:
Mustang GT = 300bhp, 320lb.ft (claimed) - 262rwhp, 285rwtq
Roush Stage 2 (suspension and aero stuff only) = 300bhp, 320lb.ft - 261rwhp, 286rwtq
Saleen S281 = 335bhp, 345lb.ft - 277rwhp, 292rwtq (worthless)
Shelby GT-C = 319bhp, 330lb.ft - 273rwhp, 304rwtq

The lesson here kids is the regular Mustang GT which YSS and I have been harping on all this time for being value for money has once again proved to be the best of the Mustang trim line to get. The Saleen is hugely disappointing...The extra ~16bhp gets washed when you compare it to the Shelby which only has a better intake basically.

And for the last time the Mustang GT and Roush handle quite well--and much better than you people are giving it credit for. The Roush has one killer suspension and it actually does VERY well on a track. Even Jeremy Clarkson liked the Roush.

But this is offtopic...

Anyone who brings this argument up anymore is an idiot. If it's just the badging, de-badge it after purchase.👍

Haha, well sorry for being an idiot, GT3man ;)

@ holdenspd; I think you're right about Hyundai. It could grow on me in the same way Honda grew on my parents... they use to think they were rubbish cars, but now, many years later, they very much like them.

But this is offtopic...

Well, not completely. I think its pretty clear that its going to be Hyundai's main goal to take on the Mustang with this car. A 300 BHP V6 in a 2+2 configuration puts in squarely in the market with it, and if the price estimations are any guess, it is going to be one helluva battle.

Personally speaking, the V8 is still the selling point of the Mustang, but if the Hyundai can deliver similar performance with better fuel economy and such, why not get the Korean?

I think the biggest problem with the car is that its going into what will eventually be a very saturated market. It'll be going up against not only the Mustang, but also the Camaro, the Challenger, to some extent the BMW 1-series, obviously the 350Z (and to some extent the G37), among others.

It can be a stand-out car if the performance matches the looks, and one hopes it can do it.

Hey, how about a bit of propaganda too?

NEW YORK, March 19, 2008 – Hyundai unveiled Genesis Coupe, a new benchmark for affordable 300-horsepower sports coupes, during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show today. The 2010 Genesis Coupe is a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sports coupe featuring two performance-focused engines – a 212-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping all-aluminum 306-horsepower, DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. Genesis Coupe is scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009.

Following the introduction earlier this year of the rear-wheel drive Genesis sports sedan, Genesis Coupe is Hyundai's most dynamic performance car ever and the second consecutive all-new model introduction from Hyundai appealing directly to the car enthusiast. Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture that was originally developed for the Genesis sports sedan.

Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Genesis Coupe 2.0t (2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo) offers an optional five-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® while the 3.8-liter V6 offers a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC to handle the additional torque.

"We think our entry-level Genesis Coupe 2.0t, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sports coupes," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "The 3.8-liter version of Genesis Coupe takes things to an even higher level, rivaling the capability of premium-performance coupes like Infiniti G37."

Genesis Coupe was shown as a concept at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show and its transformation from concept to production reveals that its signature design features have emerged intact. Genesis Coupe is also unmistakably linked to several Hyundai concept cars. The powerful curves, surface detail, and "Z" bodyside lines come straight from the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sports coupe. Genesis Coupe's arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car's broad shoulders and wide stance. Genesis Coupe rides on standard 18-inch alloy wheels or optional 19-inch wheels, both delivering a bold stance and aggressive handling.

In keeping with its mission to be the most exciting, affordable sports coupe on the road, the Genesis Coupe boasts a cockpit designed to enhance the driving experience. An information display screen, features an outside temperature reading, audio system information and HVAC settings. Analog gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster features Hyundai's signature blue gauge illumination.

Music lovers will welcome the inclusion of standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods®. Among the other refinements are an Infinity audio system, sport bucket seats and two-stage front seat warmers. Genesis Coupe also offers the convenience of a proximity key and push button starter.

The 2010 Genesis Coupe includes a wide range of both active and passive safety features. Standard safety equipment includes driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, along with front seat-mounted side airbags, side air curtains, active front head restraints, four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry's most effective life-saving technologies.

I wonder how well this would perform against the GT-R with a turbo V6.

this thing looks like it's going to be a sleeper when it first comes out.

is this thing supposed to be the Tiburon's "bigger" brother?

-> I should say that the Genesis coupe (I have to get used with that name, since I keep on calling it Tiburon), is a great value for the money for what it is. I don't even care if it has an H-badge, I'd take it over any Detroit-made slumber-party of a car. 👎

-> I had driven a S197 Mustang GT M/T, and it was a disapointing value for money, only good for people who says that the S2000 is a harsh vehicle to drive with everyday. :indiff:

-> I'd still say that this coupe will under-cut a LOT of cars not just with its class but any FR vehicles as well. Namely the 135i, G37, especially the over-hyped Camaro, and of course the S197 Mustang. :)

-> For now everyone is hating it, but I'll wait 3 years later and see what happens. :trouble:

~> I will laugh if BBC's Top Gear will like the Genesis more than the Mustang GT. :sly:
