I Hope Polyphony Decide to Map the Clutch to the Controller

Hopefully the do include support for proper clutch usage, even if its mainly aimed at people with wheels, at least have the option there for those few who will try using it on a controler.

Is there still a big difference between the wheel with clutch times and the controller times?

I remember there was always about 1.5-2seconds difference (wheel was faster) when the fast laps/league started here on GTP

Hmmmm.... I'm not completely convinced that wheels are faster. Don't get me wrong, they are better, WAY better. I think there's more to consider.

Someone who has a wheel is most likely a hardcore player who plays often, and is there for better. Vs. more casual controller players it's not surprising which times are lower.

The wheel is a better tool... period. There's a fluidity of control you can attain with a wheel that you can't get with a controller... though there are some controller-bound players who are very, very, very good... I find that I can be very competitive in the lower PP events with a controller, but my steering is never as smooth as a wheel-guy's. For more powerful cars, a wheel with a long-travel throttle pedal has a huge advantage over the controller and its one to one and a half inches of throttle travel.

Can't disagree with that. Except for the Clutch. The Clutch on the G25 is essentially an ON/OFF Switch. This can be achieved just as well with a button.

The clutch on the G25 is analouge, not an on/off switch. When you downshift with a G25 you have to either blip the throttle to match the engine revs (heel/toe), or you can progressively lift the clutch pedal for a bit of extra braking from the rear of the car. Also when you do a standing start in a powerful car you can slip the clutch to eliminate wheelspin.

I'm sure that if they mapped the clutch to the L2 or R2 buttons, the same effect could be reproduced, however controlling it would take a while to master

All of the buttons on the DS3 are analogue... (Not sure about dpad - assuming not as "dpad" = "digital pad")

Of course - the analogueness of the small buttons is a lot harder to use as their travel is fairly minimal!!

You guys do realise real life clutches have very little feedback, the 'feel' of the clutch is mostly dependant on the diaphram spring, position of the engaging spot is adjustment and wear and ~95% of the actual feedback is from the vehicles reaction in motion and sound (to a lesser extent vision and even more lesser vibration through the pedal due to friction) .

In games your feedback will pretty much be sound and visual and the main ingredient missing as always will be motion. The general feel/profile can be added with springs, like the Fanatec Porsche clutch that is springed to be 'poppy' rather than linear.

I think you've got a point there. When you lift the clutch in real life you're feeling for the bite point but also feeling for movement from the car.

Another point is that gearboxes feel different from car to car, even if you compare a car with the same gearbox layout. Some gearboxes feel notchy some have peculiar quirks, such as an old Nissan I had which needed third before you could get reverse :-)

So, for the above reasons I'm not keen on a clutch for controller or wheel as I've yet to try one which adds any level of realism.

Hi i'm new to the forum.

Anyone played Forza 3? They added in a clutch option and with all the assits off it made for a pretty deep and enjoyable (after a few races) experience. Im looking forward to GT5 and would love for a clutch option for the standard controller. Even if most people aren't going to use it.

Clutch kicks in drifting are a pretty big thing, well so i've heard, i'm not a drifter myself. A man can only dream!

The clutch option in FM3 is great, I don't really like to use it, but the problem is that it's either ON or OFF, no slow gradual take offs to prevent tire spin

Yer I know what you mean.

This is probably pretty noobish but is there anyway of asking Polyphony? It might be a bit late to add it into the game, but it would add that little extra for those who want it. You can only try.

It's quite difficult to actually get a hold of them. The only way is really through Sony of Japan

I did have a look on their site but they didn't have a contact section. I guess it a wait and see approach then, I just hope Yamauchi adds it in, but its not the end of the world. Got a couple of years yet! lol!

How many additional fingers do you have to grow to be able to manual shift using a controller AND use the clutch.... ?

You´re right...It is not impossible since I´ve tried it in NFS Pro Street, but it is a feature that it is not necesary at all. Its just a push-button mess. Just imagine doing the "toe-heal" manuver with your fingers! But I guess its a cool feature if you´re using a G25 wheel. I´d say...yes. Include it but as an option for having fun, and trying something different. Not as a mandatory feature.

Left analog for driving
Right analog as shifter
L2 for brake
L1 for clutch
R2 for acceleration

In my opinion that would be the most realistic set up for a controller, but nothing beats the real thing.

Left analog for steering
X - Acceleration
Square - Brake
O - Clutch
L1 - Shift Down
R1 - Shift Up

Thats my purrrfect set up. I'm not a fan of L2 and R2 as they don't have enough feel to them for racing, although you get more control.

Thats actually a really great set up, but it doesn't take in the motion of actually shifting gears which requires timing between the clutch.

The clutch in ProStreet was the only redeeming feature of the game, i'm surprised they didn't include it in Shift.

I'm hoping for a button mappable clutch in 5, mostly for drifting.

And of course the ability to destroy it! :trouble:

This dude's got the right idea.

When I play PC racing games with a controller I have it so Brake/throttle are right stick, turning on the left stick.
L1- clutch
R1- Handbrake
L2- Shift down
R2- Shift up.

Forza motorsport 3 put the clutch on L1(LB) and it work perfecly, it is tricky at the begin but 1 or 2 lap later a new world is opening to you, that affect a lot more than just the shifting itself .....when you drift it's awesome!!!
