If you were to design your own car, how would you want it to be?

I just want to see what most of you would do. Mine would be optimized aerodynamically and would be mid engine awd. A pastel color would be cool.

Hmm.. i guess something like a Honda: affordable; reliable and well built; quite sporty/bit of racing heritage; RWD or FWD (to hopefully keep weight down); relatively fuel efficient/decent economy; great suspension geometry; great use of tech, and an overall great aesthetic design language, whilst still remaining aerodynamic.

PS. the car should have a little room for improvement: performance related OEM parts.

[EDIT]
Pastel colours would be cool also, but an optional extra from the base colours.

* Free, without having to pay anything!

* 100% safe in whatever situation you are or whatever accident you're in.

* Good for the environment (so no exhaust).

* Drive as long as you want without having to charge batteries, fill up the gas tank of whatever.

* Very comfortable and nice to be in.

* 100% theft free :D

* The possibility to change between FWD, AWD en 4WD. FWD for daily use because it's safer to drive that way. RWD when you want to play (e.g. snow) or drive on a race track. 4WD when I go on vacation in the winter to the Alps.

* Decent performance. I.e. a lot of torque, like a powerfull diesel and a lot of Kw like a gasoline engine. And very sporty when you want it to be.

You asked, I answered. The title doesn't say it has to be realistically.

It would be RWD, Proper Manual none of this flappy computerized garbage just a simple old clutch and H-Pattern shifter.

No computerized bs like abs,tcs etc.

- RWD with an option to activate AWD only if the rear tyres slip (and even that limited to 10% for the front wheels).
- Full manual gearbox, 7-speed.
- No driver aids whatsoever.
- 7.2L Twin-supercharged V12, two 6-2-1 exhausts with unequal-length primary headers. I'd presume a track mode with no boost from the chargers at around 900hp, with a boost to about 1556hp for the long straights, would tune for a flat torque curve.
- Decent comfort for long trips.

I once had an idea of designing a hypercar around a fifth gen Pontiac Grand Am Coupe. Not sure why, i just like the shape. here's what i would do to it:

-Upgrade the chassis to accomodate for extra power and speed
-Keep standard 2.2 Ecotec 4 for front wheels, mount LS9 where rear seats used to be for rear wheels
-Dual engine setup allows a cruising/economy mode for front wheel power and you can turn on the LS9 for sports mode, keep both on for maximum potential
-Mount on the new 7 speed manual from the C7 Vette

Never did think too hard on it. I chose dual engine power over cylinder deactivation because it sounds cooler.

At the moment, my WRX with an EJ257 instead of the EJ205 (more torque predominantly) with turbo-back exhaust and ECUTeK retune, thicker custom intercooler and with Bilstein coilovers, Ohlins dampers, Volk Racing RE30s in black with polished lip (18x7.5, +53 offset), shod with Toyo T1 Sport 225/40ZR18 tyres.

Designed (roughly :sly:) from scratch, I'd go for a similar setup mechanically to the Prodrive P2 prototype (YouTube that 🤬 :D), as a 3-door hatchback with similar overall body shape to the Audi RS3, but with a Liberty/Legacy 4GEN GT front end adorned with an STi front splitter and an FMIC. Also rather than the EJ257 I'd go for the EZ30 flat-6 with a Raptor Supercharger (somewhat for sound, but mostly for less stress as a high-performance engine), and a feature list similar to that of a current WRX STi Spec R...but with better look and feel of course because the STi's interior is pretty damn drab.

18x9" 5-spoke concave-face wheels, with Federal 595RSR 255/35ZR18 tyres. Target weight would be about 1400kg taking into account the creature comforts and the AWD system. Projected power at the flywheel: 325kW+ (435hp+). Due to drivetrain losses, target power output would be 225awkW (301awhp).

Front engine, front wheel drive 3 or 5 door hatchback with three variations.

The standard model would come with a 2.0L I4 good for 180hp and would be connected to a 6-speed double clutch. It would fit the bill of what a hatchback needs to do. It would have excellent rear cargo space, even space for 5 people, lay flat rear seats, a comfortable suspension that wouldn't shatter your spine on long car trips, and would have some pretty good gadgets in it: SatNav, Bluetooth, 15 speaker stereo, HID headlamps, heated and A/C seats, and so-on. It would start around $25,000 and go up from there, think kind of a 5 door Volvo C30.

The sport model would have a turbocharged 1.6L I4 good for 210hp connected to a 6-speed double clutch with optional paddle shifters. It would have a tuned engine note to make it sound the part, along with sport seats, 18" wheels, summer only tires, tuned suspension, larger brakes and a unique aero-kit that actually improved the aerodynamics. It would also be available with SatNav, HID lights, etc. An optional track pack would be offered that would fiddle with the turbos and a few other tuning options to boost the car to 230hp and would strip out the back seat in favor of a roll cage. The tuning package would also be sold as a dealer installed option for those who still wanted a back seat.

The eco model would have a plug-in diesel electric hybrid system good for about 90hp, but would be one of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road. The transmission would be a modified CVT. The car would have an different aero-kit separate from the sport model, would be lower to the ground, have solid wheels and come standard with almost nothing to decrease the weight.

Geez. Super creative. That sounds like a lot of work too.

Sounds like it would be really heavy.

My first racing game was an off road truck game. But I don't know, the whole truck thing never caught on to me. I grew up in a desert area and having a lifted truck was the cool thing to do, most kids would take their trucks off road for fun. But sport cars caught my attention more. There is just something sexy and intriguing about them. Specially the part where once tuned and optimized for performance they take on this similar appearance to other sport cars. It is as if the geometry for speed happens naturally, sort of like the number pi. And also the exotic colors some of the manufactures pick. They are shiny and look like an art piece. You can wax it and it looks like a mirror. You turn on the engine and even the sound of the engine takes on this characteristic distinctive sound that just says "I was optimized for maximum efficiency when it comes to performance". The tires are just the right width and diameter to fully use the power that the engine has to offer. And the transmission or trans-axle have just the right gearing ratios to allow the car to reach the speeds it was designed too.

Sorry I got carried away lol.

If it is just for you, that's cool. But there are people who would probably need those aids. Or they would crash or something.

These things are really hard to accomplish and engineers have been trying too for decades.

Yeah. That is the thing though, front wheel drive is the cheapest most economical way to go. The robots at the factories work faster just plumping an engine and trans axle assembly to the front of the car, and the designers can add less material to the overall body of the car, like the rear. Also the extra weight in the front allows for better traction, thus, saving fuel.

My dream car would probably be similar to the Aston Martin V12 Vantage: beautiful, front engined, rear drive. It woudl have a 6 or 7 speed manual, two seats, a big enough boot to make it useful, and a big, smooth V12. Aslo, it would have to be unbelievably beautiful.

I grew up with a father who had a passion for big trucks so it instantly caught on. That and the fact that it looked and sounded way more badass than a lot of people vehicles I knew of, and most people knew my dad by that god damn thing. Most of the stuff performs really well offroad where we usually were but it just always looked nice and had lots of high-performance and strong stuff on it so I came to love them.

About an exact copy of this beast, but with modern brakes (ABS) and suspension, a mildly built 460 rated at a conservative 500 hp, and a limited-slip differential to do a 2 wheel version of this in the face of hybrid drivers:

:sly:

All for under $25,000, which would be entirely possible if the UAW didn't exist.

Something like the Panther Solo.

Nice car. I had a book that has that layout, and that car too. I forgot the name of it. I made the mistake of giving it to some girl when I was trying to get in her pants, since she was a car nut too. Stupid mistake. Man I was dumb back then.

I wish cars still looked fancy like this.

Yeah my dad was a muscle car guy. I like muscle cars too, but I preferred sport cars. He thinks sport cars are made cheaply and they would fall apart even in a low impact crash. He also liked trucks. He had a Ford Bronco, and he broke an axle getting stuck in the mud.

Let me see.

All wheel drive, with a controllable center differential and torque bias.

Turbocharged. More power, less motor.

It needs to be useable on a daily basis. So it should seat five.

Hmmm....

WRX-STi-8.jpg

Awww... great... they beat me to it.

If I were to tender a design for my own vehicle, it would probably have the following characteristics:

- A large displacement, naturally aspirated V8 or V12 mated to an 8-Speed automatic
- Mid-Front engine, rear wheel drive
- Classic GT proportions; long, slender nose with a shorter rear deck, highly swept back windshield and extremely organic, curvaceous body - no tack-on scoops, spoilers, etc.
- Extremely luxurious interior accommodations for four:
- A full suite of real analogue gauges
- Rich, finely oiled burled walnut. Everywhere.
- A full, powerful audiophile-grade stereo system
- A herd's worth of nice, supple tan-butter coloured leather with plush carpeting and all the bells and whistles
- Power everything
- Chrome 5-spoke 19" wheels
- Quad chrome exhaust,
- Black with very heavily tinted windows, minimal of chrome trim around the grille and windows
- Full HID/LED lighting

I suppose it'd be a heavy beast, but it'd be great for blasting across continents with ease and dispatching most anything in a straight line.

It's name: The Dreadnought.

The Tommy Kaira ZZII from Gran Turismo 2(Not the one in GT5). Specifications according to the screenshots.
Fell in love with the car when playing GT2, but was shocked to see how it looked in GT5. Apparently the GT2 version was the prototype and the GT5 one is the final version.
I hope I'll be able to build it one day.

Bronco's are good vehicles, but anything can break in the mud. Luckily I haven't broken an axle before. I have managed to put the front driveshaft through the floor however.

True. I know it's an utopian dream.
But who knows, one day ........ .

Some sort of 4-door, looks great, has a decent amount of cargo space, and about 650 hp. Also with a comfortable ride, which can instantly be made into a track-type setup. 4 racing seats & harnesses, along with a roll cage.

Sort of like a longer, lower, winged Aston Martin Virage.

  • 2.5 Turbo 5 cylinder engine making around 350 HP.
  • 6-speed manual or 6-speed DCT (Haven't decided, but leaning on DCT)
  • FR configuration
  • Designed by Henrik Fisker
  • 2+2 seating configuration
  • Base price of $30,000-$35,000

That would be pretty sweet.

If I were to design a car, it'd...
  • be a 2-seater/4-seater coupe.
  • have to be very light, with the car weighing no more than 1200 kg. Below 1000 kg would be fantastic. 👍
  • be powered by electric completely.
  • I would aim for a 50/50 weight distribution.
  • be either a 4WD or a RWD.
  • power wouldn't matter, even if it's less than 175 HP.
  • be made of something that is reusable and environmentally-friendly. (Does aluminium fit in this criteria?)
  • make use of renewable energy. (Maybe solar panels fitted to the roof?)
  • cost less than 110,000 USD.
I believe the Tesla Roadster would be the closest thing to it.
I know, most of them are crazy and unfeasible ideas, but I couldn't have come up with anything better...
