True Dapper, very true.

Maybe my expectations were too high, but I wish there was a free way for me to prove my skills and not race with all the nubs.

My biggest complaint is that if I want to move forward, I have to keep shelling out more $$ I thought my $12 included everything in the game, my mistake there 👎

iRacing may seem expensive at first, especially when you are used to the free games. But based on how you describe your driving, my instinct tells me you will treat this more like a hobby than a game, as many iRacers do. These also seem to be the people who get the most enjoyment out of it. The competition truly is a wonderful experience, and it was cool to just jump on a practice server and see guys like RusiRaser and others in the Le Mans Series racing the other night at Road America with 30 other cars on track, just doesn't happen in other games.

After you spend the first bit of money, you will realize that as a hobby where you spend considerable driving time over a long period of time (ie years rather than weeks or months from other games), it really doesn't cost very much. And once you've 'bought' something, you have it forever (or until iRacing shuts down).

I have saved TONS of money I would have spent on movies, alcohol and other 'hobbies' BECAUSE I spent a little bit in iRacing, so it's cash positive for me!!! 👍

As for the crashing and associated frustration, I have learned that my best and most consistent results came from LEARNING HOW TO AVOID accidents, caused by me and especially by others. You really aren't as good as you think you are until you have analyzed accidents that you've had and figured out how you could have avoided them. Rookie series is a great place to learn, and you keep using that skill all the way up to the highest level.

Dapper you done for a while eh? Bummer, I was hoping to share some track with you in the MX-5 sometime.

Indefinitely I would say. ;)
Even if my subscription wasn't up I wouldn't be racing much, not as much as I'd like for sure, just because me and my wife have new schedules and time seems to be kind of a luxury item these days.

I was/am really looking forward to a GTPlanet league or something of that nature. I think that would be a perfect blend of competition and familiarity. 👍

I only started about a month ago aswell and I found iracing to be great. My advice for cleaner races is practice a bit more and get more consistent faster times, as generally the faster the drivers the cleaner the races IMO. Aim for a low 1:00 on lime rock and a low 1:02 on Okayama and hopefully that clears you from the accidents.

Don't give up just yet cause of a few bad races, even just start from pits like others are saying and if you are as good as mentioned you should have no troubles gaining a few positions.

All the best mate and hope to see you on the track.

I was struggling to find time initially but then with a stroke of luck my work hours changed from 12-8pm to 7am-2pm, so instead o not being able to play on workdays I now have half a day to play every work day. Win.

As for spending money, I accidentally have now ended up buying every road course and car. I figured, well, dont really do oval racing.
3 weeks on, yep, I'm on the ovals...

every one has posted very well about IRACING and I agree with every post. I am hooked on this game and I find myself using my PS3 less and less. As some of you might know, I just dropped a nice chunk of change on a tower mainly just to play IRACING at max eye candy (lol), but now I'm looking more and more about just selling the PS3 and going to PC for everything. BATTLEFIELD 3 is going to be insane (off topic).

I can't wait to try IRACING once my tower gets here, I never thought I'd be so excited about buying a tower lol

as long as IRACING is here, I will be a member 👍

I've had the dirty thought of selling my PS3 to help fund a new tower, but that's a big step. I always have a deep dark hope that Kaz will someday give die hard GT drivers a real draft and tire model but that'll probably never happen.

I'm also getting a tower this weekend, although it won't be a super computer, it's a Dell from the office with an updated video card, but it'll be a major step up from my laptop. My hope is that it holds me over until I can afford a super bad a$$ computer.

sweet as long as it's a step up, you are going in the right direction lol.

did you pay for it or were they tossing it at work?

Nah, I own the joint and it's been laying around for some time now after one of our economic restructures. It's a Dell but has 4 gigs of ram and my part time IT guy is going to clean it and put a nice video card in it over the weekend, so I'm considering it sweet fringe benefit of running the place.

We don't know how good it's going to be but it's got to be a step up from my laptop, last night at Okayama I was getting low 40 FPS the majority of the race.

I hope either you are willing to ship a PS3 over here if you don't mind. At the rate my financial aid is going, I may not even have money to get another PS3:indiff:

congrats

SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE POST :dunce:

what happened to your old one? I have a PS3 fat sitting here, with a bad blu ray reader but everything else works on it 👍

if you have a fat of the same type, you can just swap the blu ray in yours into mine.

I also have a brand new blue ray eye for it (it didn't fix it, I needed a new blu ray reader)

Is yours a 60 GB? Mine has this problem where it'll cut off after only a short time of being off.

Good to know, thank you for the comment.

Yep, I bought the lower end MacBook Pro 15 inch with a 256mb pixel shader graphics card. I'm running a medium graphic quality and 100 fps. I ended up buying a super desktop. Now I'm running 350 fps! And I have it limited.

That might be needed for most drivers, but I had no problem switching to iracing, the physics are pretty good. I read over some rules and such and I decided to hop into a race in the Mazda cup and got it right this time (no really, I shouldn't be celebrating that I found out how to race finally ) and I got the top time of everyone with a 1:02.497 and I didn't quite have the best start as I waited forever for the lights to show and upon entering turn 1 of lap one, someone spun me out! 👎 :grumpy:

What I think is I"m no rookie, I know how to drive and here I am stuck with a bunch of other rookie's who don't know what they are doing. So I tried it again later and someone else hit me hard from behind and straight into a wall I went, not cool.

Then, I decide to go try something a little further away from the rookies and what do I find? I have to Buy more tracks and cars? Ugh....so I think I'll be sticking to GT5 since I don't like the slippery slope spending iRacing has. Sorry for the rant, but after racing online in GTR2 and GT Legends where the races were 99% clean and competitive, I expected the same. /rant

No, it is for all (yourself included) to read to see how iRAcing operates. yeah, you may be fast around the track (arent we all! :dopey: ), but it is critical to now how the system works.

...and if you spent more time around the site you will find everyone says, "the goal of a rookie (that is what you are when you first join iRacing :dopey: ) is to get out of the rookie class." Up there you will find much cleaner racing.

Shame you have to go. remember that if you ever recondsider iRacing all purchased track/car content (if you bought any) will still be available.
:indiff:

Yeah, as others have mentioned, one should now more about iRAcing before jumping in. I tried the game ~2008 and loved the physics (the best!), but I had not time to play the game. I finally got around to joining fulltime this summer and I am loving it. However, I knew that my schedule does not permit clubs or leagues so I was looking for clean pickup races and I could not find that in GT5, S2U, GTP, GTR2, pickup races except once in a blue moon. I get cleaner racing every night in iRacing (touch wood! haha)!

So no worries! enjoy your GT5 racing!
:)

edit: I did not see your name on the GTP iracing directory. If you want to PM your iRacing name I can take a look at your stats
(another good think about iRacing is using 'real names' and having so many stats of each player available for public viewing)

Fail for IRacing.
"use real name"
supposedly they make use of your credit card name.... with the exception of "minors", since that would be illegal (apparently).

I find this 'term of use' to be well intentioned... but like the saying goes... 'with the best intentions'... :/
Back to F40 GT5 driving I guess....

I don't really see a reason why it would be so wrong, just like any other purchase...

I'm not sure where the registry is but can you add my name there if it's not on the list already? John Wilding.

I like that they use our real names, it keeps people honest by not using multiple gamer names to create havoc. I also love visiting people's pages to see their lap times and results. One more plus to the sim.

Hey Spec, are you mainly running Miatas? I jumped into a hosted session with Bryan and Richard Towler going around Sebring Club at night in the Roadster and they were just killing it. I was so humbled and off pace by miles.

What's the big deal about using your real name?

Wardez, whats up man!

Yeah, I'm a measly "high rated" D License guy who doesn't want to spend too much money until I get a proper PC. I hope the Dell Tower I get donated to me this weekend is a significant upgrade from my laptop, if it is then I'll buy some more content. Long story short I've been focusing on the MX-5's, Solstice's, and Jetta's in the Grand Touring series. It may be obvious by now that I'm a hardcore tin top guy.

Fingers crossed that the tower is nice. :D

Hope the new setup turns out nice for you man!! Looking forward to some good racing with you in the GrandTouring series!

Yeah, you're the man when it comes to those cars so the GT series sounds like a perfect fit for you.

I did a fair bit of official racing in GT when it first came out, then I got addicted to the Skippy :D

Now with the NTM it's even more addictalaber!

xD

Hope the tower works out, any little upgrade in hardware really flies with iR. So you should be good. From what you're doing now I really think you'd dig the Radicals and the Vette. Possibly the V8S if you're into it.

Are you gonna join the GTP league? Hope to see on track again soon.

Hey Spec, how ya been man? I've been on iracing here since about June and I'm absolutely loving it. Gonna be good times to run door to door with you again in the touring series:tup:
