For everyone's information, the fastest lap at SPA in the F1 is supposedly 1'44.3 by Samuel Libeert but the fastest I've seen is 1'44.6 by Max Dell'Orco. Personnally, I have improved to low 1'45s and a YouTube video will be posted tomorrow, if not today. Unfortunately, I had one little (x1) incident on that 1'45.282 but still it's a cool lap to watch!

Care to share a setup?

Yeah I really think I should give it up sometimes. However, I have so much fun if I can just get past Lap 1-2

I am wondering if I should try going back to longer races though instead of the short fixed races, etc. I can only recall like 2 races in Grand Am series when someone took me out before Lap 2 out of the tons of races I did last season

Am I correct that people just tend to be more patient in longer races or perhaps maybe Grand Am is that way because we all knew each other?

Man guys like that are just too fast... Honestly I've been thinking more and more bout retiring form sim racing for a bit cause I just dont see myself getting fast like these guys ever lol

This might sound like a silly suggestion to some people, but have you considered reading a racing book if you havne't already. The Skip Barber Racing School put out a fantastic book that I can't say enough good things about. The really fast guys aren't faster because they have amazing reflexes; they're faster because they know things we don't. They see the track and feel the car in a different way from us. Once you known what they know you're practice time become SO much more productive.

That reminds me... I really should finish that book. :dopey:

This has nothing to do with speed per se because rather people have 3000+ iRating or as low as 1000 they all get wrecked in the Prototype & Gt fixed series fairly often (unless they're an HPD on Pole).

I'm trying to figure out the safest place to go so I can survive Lap 1 intact

* Remember livemusic's post about this a few pages back and he's crazy fast with a nice solid iR

If I can survive I can hit top 5 or 6th-7th consistent;ly

To give an example, one race at suzuka where i was left untouched I took 4th.

edit- You know what I can solve this riddle myself fast by looking at race results from Prototype & GT open series which have much longer races. If I see a lot of folks survive Lap 1 that is all I need

edit2 - Grr, it looks like thats a mixed bag too.... I'm seeing a lot of Lap 1 deaths in the race results already this week.....

I used Jacob Nielsen's setup in the iRacing's F1 forum. He posted it on the first page, right beside Steve Leko's setup. Both are really good and stable but Nielsen's is 1 second faster per lap. In a race I wouldn't know though.

I just started oval racing, and have a question.

I was in a race, had 0x car contact, black flagged due to damage, so I fast towed to pits waited for the tow timer to finish then rejoined. I thought in rookie races you get a new car when you fast tow? I didn't and got dq for driving with damage, even though the car felt fine.

feel like crap. still cant do brands hatch after 100's of laps.

going to rewatch senna documentary to make myself feel better.

Just ran a load of laps at Laguna Seca in the Solstice. Despite setting a what I would regard as a good time (1'47 dead after struggling in the high 1'48s for a while) my ego has taken a big bruising when I looked at the world record times which are in the high 1'41s. I'm used to being 0.5-1s away from the leaders in the WRS in GT5 with a clean lap, but being over 5 seconds away?

I could maybe get down to a low 1'46 or a high 1'45 if I spend a couple of days attacking the circuit but that is still a long way off. Maybe it has something to do with setup, or maybe i'm just not quite as fast as I thought I was

Well, I hate brands hatch so much but I don't think I have learnt so much advance techniques in such a short period of time. I have really advanced my knowledge of the Skip on this track like no other yet I am no where that fast or as close to WR as any other track. Odd. I think I have a lot to learn about the Skip over the next few weeks, I am going to take the techniques I have learnt and practise them some more.

Overall, not happy about my progress. PB 1.42 but I have no confidence of producing this in race mode or over 15 laps without a spin out. Sad.

Looks like I ain't the only one who hates Brands Hatch. The level of participation compared to normal races is astonishing... 50% difference?

I think the low turnout is due to the track not being in enough race series and that it isn't a US track. I love Brands Hatch. Some of the corners are so special and not replicated in any other circuit. The first corner, Paddock Hill Bend, is so difficult to get right but when you do it feels awesome. The changes in elevation are great and the whole track has this special feeling when you head out into the woods only to then return into the natural bowl where most of the spectators are.

(Oh yes, and Brands Hatch is my local track and I've spent many a happy weekend there. :))

Be careful when you're looking at the world records as over time the physics have changed, so you should only compare against the times in the current season. So I've got some good news for you, it isn't as bad as you thought, the fastest times this season are low 1'42s. :sly: :sly: :sly:

Did you get black flagged (DQ'd) or black with orange dot flagged (pit for repairs)? If I remember right, you only have so many laps (think it's 3 on ovals) to pit before you're shown the black flag.

I got meatballed at first, black flag with orange dot, I then towed to the pits, waited for the tow timer, then rejoined the track, at which point 2 laps later I was DQed.

I would just avoid oval racing. :)

Just kidding, I have no idea but it seems weird.

Good luck!

I see you just got the game. It might take more than a day to instantly click. A lot of places where you can lose time even thought he lap is clean is under braking and corner speed. I recently just got it too.

 What got me at first was the shifting. I couldn't for the life of me manage assistless shifting even after practicing for 2 hours at Laguna Seca. Now I use auto-clutch, but you still have to tap the throttle when you downshift, which took me a while to figure out I thought auto-blip would do this for you but it doesn't, so that didn't work either.

In other news, I am currently ecstatic. I just took my first win in an MX-5 at Okayama :D. I started in second place and kept with the leader, the two of us leaving the rest of the field for dust. I overtook him on lap 5 or 6 I think, then the race was uneventful from there on. I made a slight mistake around lap 12 or 13 which meant he closed in but I opened the gap right up on the next lap, eventually finishing 1.2 seconds ahead. It was only my second race

very nice. this is about the actions i took when i first started, the mx5 just clicked with me. wait till you get to the d class and c class stuff it will get much more fun and competitive

@Seismica - Are you sure auto-blip is on? Because it does blip the throttle when when you downshift, if yours isn't then there's something wrong.

I can't seem to turn both auto-clutch and auto-blip on (drop down box only lets me select one). It's not a problem now though as I've gotten used to it. Maybe in the future I will turn off auto-clutch and start to heel/toe but for now it's a little difficult for me to do both.

When I was practicing at Laguna Seca I used auto-blip and it didn't seem to work, at least for tapping the throttle when downshifting, though I think it did auto-lift when upshifting.

My first race was more competitive but I wasn't fully used to the car (And I hadn't got the hang of tapping the throttle like I mentioned) so I finished 6th due to a few mistakes I made. I know at some point the quality of the field will level out and i'll be more in the midfield rather than challenging at the front.

When you select auto-blip it automatically selects auto-clutch too. There's no way to run auto-blip without auto-clutch.

The way you described it is the opposite of how it works. It doesn't lift the throttle when upshifting, just blips it when downshifting.

Also, in the configuration menu there's a box on the bottom left corner you can tick to save the configurations just for the car you are using at the time. Maybe that box was checked when you chose auto-blip and then you wouldn't have it on other cars.

I see. That's a shame :( I wanted to get used to shifting with clutch and the H-shifter at speed but that combined with toe/heel was too steep a learning curve for me. There should be an option to used auto-blip with manual clutch.

I think for now i'll stick with auto-clutch and paddles, i'll leave auto-blip off because it really gets my heart racing knowing that I can make mistakes so easily.

Why would you bother getting towed in the first place if it was only a 0x contact? If its driveable get it to the pits under power and save time. You said you're just starting oval so I assume this was in Legends?

I loved that movie! (assuming you're referring to that recent senna movie)

Yeah I tried making some laps around it but still too slow. just dont have the time to dedicate to mastering it right now

I am thinking I want to try Skippy again when they hit Oulton Park. I'm buying that track

Ya, Brands Hatch is a difficult track, I first tried it in Sim bins "Race 07" but it is not the same as iRacings laser scanned tracks. The Skippy was made for tracks like Brands Hatch. I have Oulton Park, fun but another hard track to master.

Anyone have tips for the MX5 at Barber? I'm stuck doing 1'42s, consistently, but would like to get it a little lower for qualifying at least. Basically using the stock setup, but I lessened the RF camber with it being a predominantly right-turn course. Still need to remove probably 1.5psi out of the LF, possibly drop all tires down a little for better times further into the race.

For anyone wondering, the Continental Endurance Series race is being held tomorrow as scheduled but GlacierTV is doing a tape delayed broadcast because they've had to step in to cover the Daytona 500.

This is going to sound stupid but I couldn't find the entrance to pits, and I didn't want to get hit trying to find it. Also towing let me watch the replay. Yeah it was a Legends race.

I'm done with legends, I spend all the time avoiding other peoples wrecks.

If you want to get out of Rookie oval, do it at Lanier. Wider track, more room to avoid wrecks. I didn't think I'd ever get out of it either. Run a few races being overly cautious. Don't stay close to anybody and don't try to make a pass without watching that driver for a couple laps to make sure they can keep their **** together. Mix in a few time trials while you're at it. Just make a bunch of clean laps, as many as you can in that session.

@livemusic, that's a very good vid. Too bad I cant see the brake inputs though. I wish skippy had a modern dash like the HPD. That way I can see your gears, etc

Sandbox. You don't need to see it. You can hear what gear he is in.
