Well, it's not a win, but I just got my first oval podium. Was racing the Late Model and even ended up with the fastest lap of the race too. Got a stupid 0x->4x though because a guy spun in front of us, I avoided him well enough to just brush his nose with my door, but then the guy behind me plowed into him, causing me to then be "involved" in the accident. Lame. :(

It was a great race again though battling for 3rd-7th for laps 10-45, all great racing, a little bumping, but nothing crazy, just good clean racing.

I highly suggest some of you try oval racing if you haven't already. I hated it before, and never even gave it a chance until now. Boy was I wrong.

Congrats on your podium:tup:. I was in the middle split race. I finished 2nd, but was disappointed with it. I was #1 and started on pole. I don't race the late models as much any more so I went into the first turn kinda slow and took it easy the first 2 laps and got passed. I just waited and let the 2 guys burn up their tires. I got into 2nd early on, but couldn't get by the leader. I was way faster through the center and exit of the corner and was running 2 tenths slower behind him than what I was doing in practice. It's tough to pass at Iowa in general because of the progressive banking. You can run the car harder on the middle to top line making passing on the inside about impossible sometimes. Wish I would have made the top split because the guy that won I happen to race with right often and we normally have some good battles.

I'm having a difficult time keeping a leader's pace, I pretty much depend on others to make mistakes from pushing too hard while I stay consistent. I can't figure out where these guys are getting the extra few tenths that I'm missing out on. I'm sure it will come with time, but right now the only way I'm going to win is to be "gifted" it when the leaders crash out.

Iv just recently started oval racing. Took me 25 years to figure out that oval racing is actually awesome!
Im really into F1 but I probably have to play iRacing at least a whole year before im gone be able to do that :-P

Keep at it and it will come. Just try not and over drive the car into the corner. You will burn up your tires quicker. I actually just got into oval racing too when I joined iracing last August. I always road raced so I had to learn a lot myself. That was the mistake I made the most and still make a lot of times is trying to drive into the corner too hard. Try and brake early and carry your momentum keeping the wheel turned the least amount possible. More you have to turn the wheel more speed you scrub off. Try and have your car setup loose as you can and still keep control. If it's too tight it will burn the tires up too fast and just push like crazy. The cars are going to want to push more as the fuel burns off and the tires wear so the looser you can have it in the beginning the more it will pay off later in the race.

One thing I'm just now noticing, which has cost me in the past, is just how cold the tires are on the first lap. Even in a grippy car like the MX-5, the first lap feels like driving on ice. I wasn't aware of it and slid out a few times.

Class D BABY! Haw-Lay-Lew-Ya!!!!!!!!!! :gtpflag:

Congratulations!

What car do you think you will go into next?

If you are still enjoying the MX-5 and/or Solstice, I highly recommend the inRacingNews Challenge. Great entry level multi-class racing.

Definitely the Skippy. Love the Formula 2 mod from Grand Prix Legends, so I heard the Skippy behaves similarly to that. If it's true what they say about it being a drift machine, then I'm all over it. Plus if I'm forced to use a cockpit view in this game, I'd rather drive an open wheel car.

But yeah, I heard about the inRacingNews Challenge. I might give that a go too. I just hate the fact that a lot of these series run only every two hours. That sucks. I wanna race EVERY hour dammit! :D

Some love the Skippy, some hate it, and some (like me) are somewhere in the middle.

If you want to race every hour, pretty much you are going to have to buy more content, or expand your horizons into oval racing as well (or both). I run multiple series on both road and oval so I can utilize the time I do get on iRacing as well as possible. Remember, there are also open practice sessions, time trials, and qualifying runs you can do while you are waiting for the next race.

AWESOME! after today's update we all get a new free track (its an oval) USA speedway. and then it has been confirmed (after lots a rumors) the CTS V WILL BE FREE!!! when it is released.

I just completed my first race last night. I didn't qualify, but forgot how to start in the pits. Ended up starting 6th in a field of 8. I got off to a slow start and was 7th or 8th at the first turn. I was really cautious in the first turn after hearing about all the mayhem. There was a couple spins and a couple off tracks and ended up in 5th place after the first corner. I barely missed a couple cars by inches. Pretty much had an uneventful race after that. A lapped car caught up to me slowly and I let him pass on lap 10 or so. On the last lap I was all of a sudden 4th. Not sure why, I'm assuming a leader must have dropped out. I stayed about 15 seconds behind the next driver for the last 10 laps or so. I thought I was gaining a couple of times, but never did make up any ground.

I had a few offs, but no major incidents, so ended up gaining 0.11 SR.

Earlier last night I did a time trial. It didn't go very well. I didn't realize you had to follow the lane coming out of the pits. I cut to the left side of the track to set up for the first corner. I received a black flag for unsafe pit exit and was told to do a stop and go. Came into the pit and stopped. I sat there for about 3 or 4 minutes and thought this doesn't seem right. I hit Esc and was then able to start. I still didn't realize what I had done wrong on the first pit exit and did the same thing again. So I came in for another stop and go. This time I hit Esc right away and was ready to go again. By now I realized that I needed to follow the lane when I came out of the pits so I got it right that time. I was now down to about 15 minutes left in my TT. I did 2 nice laps, but then had an off and had those erased. I was now down to about 12 minutes left and was worried I wouldn't get in my 8 successful laps. I drove a few good laps in a row and put in my best lap on the 4th of 8. I think it was about 1:04.5xx. The next lap I came within a hair of going off so thought I better drive conservatively so I get 8 good laps. I had forgotten that it's not the best lap that counts, but the average of the 8 laps. Driving for a few slow laps, boosted my average up to 1:05.9xx. I had a few minutes left so I pushed for the last few laps and was able to bring my average down to 1:05.4xx or so. After all that I was able to gain 0.05 safety rating.

Overall it was a fairly good night of racing. I gained 0.16 SR despite a few offs and gained a lot of experience. I'm learning alot every night right and expect I will for awhile yet. I'll likely take a couple nights off and get a couple more races in this weekend. I'll have to figure out how to start from the pits though as I don't want to get into that 1st corner mess.

OK Superbike, Swiftwilly, etc..... I am about to make my first big iRacing purchase. I have filled up my cart with as many road racing tracks I can think to cover the road content I need for the three cars I know I'm going to want to drive: The Skippy, The Mustang, and The Star Mazda and the Radical.

Please take a look at all the tracks I have here and tell me if there are any I should add in order to ensure I have all the road content I need going forward:

Any other tracks you think I need?

Or do you suggest I simply buy everything available? :nervous:

Buying everything available is up to you, there is no way to tell for sure what tracks will be used next season and what cars you may decide you want to try.

The safe way? Yeah, buy all the road courses, but then there is a chance you might not ever use some of them if you stick to only a couple different cars. Buying more up front now will save you a few bucks, because you won't have to worry about purchasing one track if you end up not having one.

Just check the past schedules for the series you want to run in, see which tracks always get used, and then think about wild cards.

Thanks. Do you by any chance know how long content stays in your iRacing cart? Or is there a deadline to buy what's in there?

Are you serious!!! That's awesome.:dopey:

It's on the main iRacing Membersite. The story is on the left side of the page right below your current race information.

Thank You. I found it just after I posted this. I can't believe I couldn't find I before. I guess it's a case of "not seeing the forest for the trees"

Any news or rumors about what series the CTS-V will race in?

I like the idea of starting on large ovals first then moving to short tracks. I'll wait until S2 to start oval racing now. Hopefully there will be less of the chaos I hear about

Nothing official yet, but you could expect it to run with the DP on the Grand Am series. But then again it is a World Challenge car and Grand Am pretty much is World Challenge's competitor... So who know's!!
I'd love to see it replace the Mustang on Grand Am and have a mixed series with the Mustang and Jetta as the Grand Touring Cup, but then again I love the MX5 in the Grand Touring Series! So many possibilities with that car!

Part of the deal with Cadillac is if they were going to pay iRacing to develop it, the car had to be available to EVERYONE.

This means it will be included from now on when you start a membership.

This also means one of two things (or maybe both):

1) It will be available straight out from the start (Rookie license 2.50 SR).
2) It will be like the F1 car and it will have a "FUN" series where anyone can drive, and then it will be further utilized in another series (MC, maybe it's own series, etc)

I'm leaning more towards #2, because I think that a 500hp+ race car isn't the best for a rookie, but if Cadillac made that part of their terms, that is what will happen.

Yeah, 500hp in a rookie series is pretty much SR murder! I think they'll make it a C class car.

My thoughts as well, it would compete with the Riley also. That would be a fun series.

Thats over done
1. your not going to have enough time if you want to be competitive. I spend pretty much the whole week in a Skip just learning the best lines and getting the best times. Unless you don't plan to go out, anything more than 2 series being competitive is overload. Depends how you want to approach if. Do you want to be just ok in comps then ok to race multiple cars. If you want to be no.1, concentrate on one series at a time

2. Once you pick a car, then proceed to purchase the tracks for it.

With it being week 5 (i think), theres only about 7 tracks left.

so go with that.

I really really really don't suggest getting that many cars as you won't have enough time to race in them.

I also won't suggest the Mustang as it does not have NTM at the moment.

[edit] Reply to isamu btw

Only reason I'd advise buying a bunch of stuff at once is to take advantage of the 20% off. I'd drop Daytona circa 2007 pronto! I'd drop Iowa! Granted I have both Daytona & Iowa & Indy (and they're all awesome) but for starting out I wouldn't buy Ovals if I was strictly road. I personally run a little Oval so for me I get more mileage. But for a rookie roadie that's not the best option

Focus on buying TRACKS and less on acquiring Cars. Buy all the road tracks you can. Ovals are absolute bottom priority. Buying CARS you cant drive in a series atm is not the best idea either. But it can give you a taste of speed. So I'd recommend buying at least one Class C+ car

I bet you want to buy Iowa cause Star Mazda is running Iowa. But recognize no other road series running Iowa. SM may never run Iowa again. Don't do it! *Keep in mind it's the fans that vote for tracks they want. These are dedicated, seasoned vets that have all the tracks so on a whim they may choose to drop Iowa

Have fun!

That would be awesome... Would help grow out the Grand Am participation. Mustang GT isn't any help cause the Class D version gets way more traffic, splits, etc. Now if they ever added the real mustang GT thats occasionally ran in Grand Am that would be a different story

If the CTS-V is a World Challenge car, I believe it could run with the Mustang in some way because I read that the Mustang Challenge cars were incorporated into WC when the Mustang Challenge ended.
