I actually really enjoyed Heat 3, 4 and 5. I spent ages trying to win the Daytona 500. When you found the difficulty level that was right you could have some incredibly tense races on the superspeedways getting into a good slipstream and dragging yourself, car by car, up towards the front before having to negotiate a restart or failing tyres or whatever and dropping back, then going again…I remember the first time I actually pulled off a final lap pass for the lead at Daytona, I felt about eight feet tall, proper sense of achievement that means those games always have a place in my heart, when you hit the sweet spot they were sometimes thrilling.
So I’m not out of hand saying this is another level to that - I’ve not recreated that thrill yet here, of course I haven’t, I’ve played it for a couple of hours. By my God the potential here is for this to be the NASCAR game of my wildest dreams. Everything I’ve tried so far works. Every little scenario I’ve set up to test the AI, the difficulty, the restarts, strategy etc so far seems to work. It’s going to have a learning curve definitely, but I’m completely bowled over by the potential here as long as it stays as solid as it has been so far. It’s funny because I don’t even think it’s a particularly stunning looking game with a great deal of instant wow factor, it just oozes authenticity and potential from every single angle. I’m ready and excited to sink a few weeks into this. I’m sure there will be a few bugs, frame-hitches and frustrations ahead but there’s just so much going on here and initial impressions are they've done a great job.
