Is anyone else disappointed with GT5?

When actually playing the game, one thing got me truly disappointed:

weatherwtf.png

When I first drove a car in the rain with the cockpit view (and it was one of the first things I did when I started the game), and saw the water on the windscreen I actually thought "they fooled us".

The difference between the actual game and the video that first showed rain is HUGE. Sad, really.

I'm glad someone else also noticed that to the point of creating this image.

Other than that, my main grips with game were before it was released, and it was the news about the Standard cars and, when we first saw the complete car list, the lack of recent hot hatches.

EDIT: By the way: having said that, I love playing this game.

Wow didn't realise it was this different! They really screwed us in the ...

This one is clearly labelled under the tag "I've got pictures to prove it but not enough wisdom to analyze further". Notice the location of the wiper and also the fact rain in GT5 isn't always at torrential strength- it's dynamic. And that speed affects the how the trail of water appears on the windscreen:

ya... im kinda wishing i waited another 6 months to buy this. either when it was marked down heavily, or has some serious patching done to it.

races.... are a joke. as has been said, theres just no real meat to them. theres a hand full of races in total, no restrictions, and no challenge. with very few exceptions, ive not lost a race yet. gt4 may have had too many events, but i never ran out of things to do, or thought the game was too short.

race prizes are just a sad, cruel joke. im looking at your nascar. i worked my ass off trying to avoid the retarded AI, and you give me a 64 Tempest Le Mans GTO? or better yet, getting all gold in the nascar challenge. my muscle car gift? a freaking taurus SHO. i mean... really? a freaking taurus as my muscle car gift?

damage, its 2010, im playing GT5 - the real driving simulator. the bumper cars havnt changed since 1998. still get that same dull thud too.

ai hasnt changed since 98 either...

slip streaming is still an over powered joke.

buying/installing parts shouldnt be a 30 step process.

acquiring a car shouldnt take a dozen steps either. congrats, youve won a car. would you like to acquire the car? heres a way too long video of your car coming out of the shadows. would you like to change to this car now?
it just took you 2 mins to acquire your car and put it in your garage. you now have 9 more waiting in your trailer still..

i really hate to say this, but need for speed has a better AI, and a more convincing damage system.
over all they took 1 step forward, and 3 massive steps back.

Plenty of things bug me:

Can't speed up B-Spec
B-Spec itself, if I wanted a racing management sim I would have bought one
Lack of events, thought there would have been tons but there just isn't.
Lack of cars from dealers, now you have to trundle through the used cars to find most of them.
Price of certain cars, 20,000,000 credits is just taking the p**s.

Overall though, so far i'm pretty happy otherwise although I have to say, graphics aside I prefer GT4.

x2
B-spec from GT4 was better. & GT4 graphics from GT4 where. Great specially. For the old PS2 hardware 1080i. we didn't have tire. Smoke. Or tire. Marks on the road but it doesn't make sense 5 plus years & the game still needs GIGABYTES of patches.

Sony & PD need to put the people working on GT6 on a production average & give them bonuses that's the only way we gonna see GT6 under a 3 year period.

Overall. GT5 is a solid Game just the time it took doesn't make sense to me.

In response to the OP, I was to start with, but then I had let myself fall prey to the hype machine that had wound up out of control in these forums. The AI winds me up at times, but I am finding that I actually like this game for what it is - brilliant. 👍

I wish there was a more simulation oriented options for practice in tracks, starting from the boxes and being able to leave it like in any pc sim.

aside from the pure visual feast that GT5 offers...i am finding it VERY hard to enjoy 5 as much as i enjoyed 4.

the layout of the garage was better.
cars were delivered to the garage WITHOUT having to go through agonizingly slow process of claiming the cars via a ticket process.
WAAAY more races.
I WANT dealership races back.
main page was much better organised, cramming it all together the way it has been on GT5 makes it look claustrophobic and cluttered to say the least.
the separation of A and B spec...not cool!
AI as has been mentioned...is still "stupid".
removal of B spec fast forward makes watching B spec race an entire race time and time and time and time and time again-to painful now.

i have a feeling (and yearning) i will be going back to 4 (even with all its flaws) and my copy of 5 will soon find it self on Ebay.

Why would it? Have you ever led a team of developers and artists to produce something of this scale before?

And again...THEY. WERE. DOING. OTHER. THINGS. IN. THE. LAST. 6. YEARS! Somebody should make a sticky post with just that in the title. How many more times are we going to hear this tired, hackneyed line?

yes, i am disapointed of the game, and i hate those special-events i hoped for a gt4 with better graphics and not a game for those alien-fast.
and i never liked b-spec.

Admittedly what can I add that hasn't already been covered lol. Sigh ... the one that's smarting right now is the rain effect in cockpit view - it looks awful. From the snippets you got in the trailers I was expecting WAY better. :(

This scale? The Mount Everest of gaming, Gran Turismo 5 is not. Better games have been made in less time. Look at Forza. You can debate weather it's actually better, but to appease the bias that seems to flourish here (see your post for example), we will say Forza is an 8.. no make that 7 out of 10 game. We will give GT5 a 9, higher than most reviews I might add.

Now, thats 20% difference. So in say, 2 years, Forza managed 70% (35% per year). In 6 years, GT5 managed 90% (15% per year).

Imagine if Turn 10 was given 6 YEARS

1. If you hoped for a GT4 with better graphics you have got that, and then some.

2. If you don't like b-spec, don't drive it. It is an optional extra, a freebee if you like. GT4 had it as well.

3. This game is not only for the alien-fast - there are even more driving assists than before.

There really is no pleasing some people.

How many more times? Six years was not the total development time!

Who said it was the mount Everest of gaming?

I have played Forza 3 a fair amount, and there are plenty of areas that don't come up to GT5 standards. Perfect it ain't.

Actual quality of output against a given time frame doesn't always correlate. You are oversimplifying it. Without any experience, or knowledge of, the process they have gone through to create this, you are stabbing in the dark with pointless guesses.

Better games have been made in less time? Almost certainly. But did those games have 200 3D models with the insane about of detail that the 200 premium cars do in GT5? This is the kind of thing that takes the time. Yes, doesn't make it a better game necessarily, but it may go someway to explain why they haven't been sat on the rear ends for this time.

there's allot of people here who have replied to those of us moaning and calling us all sorts of names like "wingers" and "grippers" and whatnot but lets look at it from a different angle...

IF Kaz/PD had never made GT's 1,2,3,4 and that GT5 was infact the 1st GT on PS3 we would all be singing Kaz and PD's praises and saying things like "what a great game, needs a few tweaks and mods but all in all, an excellent game", but that is obviously not the case so, GT5 has allot of reputation to live up to...which in MANY peoples books GT5 has failed to live up to expectations and feels more like GT4 and a 1/4.
yes, the graphics, visuals even down to the grass blowing in a cars wake as it flies by are truly breathtaking, but the game play sucks big time and the licences have been rendered more or less obsolete for some people.
the licences especially MUST go back to how they were in GT4...and thats coming from someone who took an awful long time to get all golds.

Ofcourse Forza doesn't reach Gran Turismos "lofty" heights... it didn't take half a decade to make.

I know my method of comparison doesn't show all underlining factors, but it's beside the point. We waited 6 years, weather they were working on GT5, or racing cars is of little concern to me.

Considering how much content was recycled/used in GT5 from their previuos creations during that six year period I would say it's pretty close to accurate.
I mean look at how much was ported in from the GTPSP version... all the car descriptions that were wrong there are wrong in GT5, so you can't say "taht was GTPSP time!" because it was ultimamtely both.

You wouldn't say "It wasn't really 10 years to make windows 7 because while it may have been 10 years between XP and Windows 7 they made Vista in between" would you? No because Vista was basically a point on the journey to getting to 7 anyway.

Ohhh where do I begin....

- Im really disappointed with the lack of specific events. I loved in GT4 main dealers had their own events so you would have to buy and sell a varied amount of cars to complete the game.

- I dislike the lack of progress in terms of modding, I would have liked to have more premium cars and maybe more aftermarket parts to buy.

- I dont like the unnecessary B-Spec part of the game. I hate b-spec, I only ever used it for endurance's and to get money, they could have at least added fast forward bit.

- A few tracks I like are missing such as El Capitan and Midfield.

- Not enough new cars in the game, just a collection of old, useless and stupid cars that I drove a billion times in the other games! Some cars I see and scream at the TV 'WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE!' Such as the silly amount of japanese k cars.

- I am also really disappointed at the jagged shadows in the game...wth went wrong there, how did this not get sorted before the game came out.

- Loading seems to take forever even though I did that HDD copy thing...

- When theres 16 cars on track and your at the back the gameplay doesnt seem as smooth, its really annoying, just get rid of a few cars, I pass them straight away anyway!

Basically at the moment GT5 feels to me like a GT4 for the PS3 but with a lot of features taken out. Its like GTA4 compared to GTA San Andreas, visually superior but lacking in the gameplay and stuff to do...

Buy a 360 and Forza 3 if your so disappointed. I'm sure you will find Forza 3 vastly superior, most reviewers did.

I'll stick with GT5, thanks

you know, despite GT5's shortcomings and Forza 3's incredible amount of features, I still find myself way more engrossed in GT5. I've probably spent more time with GT5 since it launched then i've played Forza 3. Go figure.

Why are some people turning this thread into a GT vs Forza debate? Forza has absolutely nothing to do with anything. GT5 is a disappointment based on peoples views of the last 4 GT games, it hasn't lived up to Gran Turismo standards and certainly hasn't lived up to all the hype (most of which came from PD and Sony themselves).

Well said.

The last few years around has seen a lot of hating on Forza's failures and I think now people are on defense a lot and keeping their Forza hate strong to detract attention from legitimate issues with GT.

If you're referring to my comment, that was not meant to incite a Forza vs GT5 debate. I was simply stating that despite its flaws, GT5 still has more soul to grab me while other racing games have more features. It was actually to compliment it.

But how can you say GT5 is a disappointment based on only the past GT's? I think people are disappointed due to the fact that PD was expected to 'catch up' to the trends of today's racing games, and surpass it! I am one of these people who thought that we would get all the features that other racing games had and get the extras. We didn't expect to take a few steps back from today's standards and even from the past GT'S. So to say that people's disappointments are only based on past GT's would be an inaccurate statement.

The thing I cannot stand is the AI. I feel like they didnt touch a single line of code to tweak the AI from past games.

Maybe the worst thing ever in the past games they kept, and that is having ONE AI car be much faster than the pack. Who cares if you can have 16 cars on the track when one of those cars is blistering fast and if you want a chance to win Gold you need a car that blows away the field. This KILLS the racing experience. It becomes a one on one battle rather than a good 16 car fight.

Also why the bleep do we spin out when an AI car rear ends us? Why doesnt that happen to AI cars if we rear end them? Another poor example of trying to make an already challlenging game MORE challenging by adding this black magic type stuff.

I really liked the game at first but the deeper I get into it, the more these things piss me off.

I've got to say, alot of the car choices in GT5 are strange at best...
Some of the premiums.....really PD...REALLY???

Why would they think ANYONE would want to drive them?

Yes...overall I'm very dissapointed with the game considering how long they worked on it.

I wasn't actually singling your comment out, I just noticed a lot of people talking about Forza which always turns into a mine is better than yours debate.

I didn't say they were "only" based on it, I made a generalisation because I couldn't be bothered typing a long list of reasons of why it's a disappointment because I've covered them in this thread and many others and it's getting tedious to constantly list them.

But how can you say GT5 is a disappointment based on only the past GT's?

Happens all the time in many areas... sometimes a new model car comes out that is just not continuing the trend of excellence. Maybe a certain TV company was hot for a few years but their latest model is not impressive.

I wasn't dissapointed with GT5P.... it was priced right and what was in it felt mostly right and well done.

GT5 I cannot say the same about.

I am disappointed, have waited a lot for this game and it didn't turn out to be nearly as good as I imagined. It feels choppy and just not up to previous GT games. The screen tearing, slowdowns etc after 6 years of development this is a letdown for me. Don't know if the sales gonna make SONY happy, let's hope so.

It maybe of little concern to you, but you and plenty others keep using the tired old line 'they've HAD six years' when, clearly, it is not as straightforward as that - in fact its inaccurate.

Yes, content has been recycled but there are still 200 premium cars here model to an amazing amount of detail. Chuck the standards away and there is plenty of work in this game.

To say they have been doing very little in the last few years is just cobblers.

It is very easy to say "what have they been doing?". Back seat developers. Cha!

Yeah that's right - like every single Ferrari in the game - yeah why would you want them? Errr, hang on, yes I would!

Sounds like you memory is faulty of the previous games.

Yes, the AI still aint perfect, but it is definitely better and different than previous instalments. Simple example is that you can spin an AI driver fairly easily - previous games they rigidly stuck to the track, unmoved.
