Is anyone else disappointed with GT5?

I wouldn't say that GT5 lived up to my expectations, but I wouldn't say that it's the worst racing game either. I still enjoy playing it despite its flaws or unfinished features as one might call it. It seems a little bit short though, but that seems to be the new standard for today's games, which is a shame. But it's better than having nothing.

And besides, now Polyphony Digitals have a template for Gran Turismo 6 should it come out for PS3.

Yes, content has been recycled but there are still 200 premium cars here model to an amazing amount of detail. Chuck the standards away and there is plenty of work in this game.

To say they have been doing very little in the last few years is just cobblers.

It is very easy to say "what have they been doing?". Back seat developers. Cha!

There undoubtedly has been a lot of work put into GT by PD, unfortunately most of it has been done in the wrong places.

I was initially blinded by the flaws - and there are several - but I've been going round the 'Ring all evening in my Silvia RM and getting faster all the time and now I can forgive all the cock-ups. This game still drives sublimely.

:tup:Well put I would have to agree 100%👍

I already know this game will last me for the 2011 year. easy. One of the few games I will keep going bak to. Looking foward to other games as well. :)

Sounds like you memory is faulty of the previous games.

Yes, the AI still aint perfect, but it is definitely better and different than previous instalments. Simple example is that you can spin an AI driver fairly easily - previous games they rigidly stuck to the track, unmoved.
I beg to differ. The AI is still completely dumb, although with a slight improvement, as they constantly manage to spin me out; on straights mostly, effortlessly too.

I've also been trying to spin them out (due to frustration) but somehow they keep being glued to the track as only a tank could get them out of control.

yes, i am disapointed of the game, and i hate those special-events i hoped for a gt4 with better graphics and not a game for those alien-fast.
and i never liked b-spec.

I have no interest in B spec so its a pointless feature for me. However I disagree about Special events because for me these have been the most enjoyable challenges.

Still say the biggest disappointment is how easy this game is. I managed 60 golds on the licences just a few days after release and now I have all golds on the special events with the exception of the last one on AMG because im level 22 and you need to be 24.

The problem for me is GT5 is unbalanced in many respects. The difficulty is extremely unbalanced in the licence tests, special events.

I just hope PD keep their promise and launch the leaderboards because these will keep me going for ages. What PD should of done is look at what Turn 10 did with FM2 and followed suit. What I mean by this is all licence tests, special events should of also had leaderboards. If not worldwide at least have them for your friends. It would of been great fun comparing your times with your friends and competing against each other. Having leaderboards for single player events gives you more motivation to keep re-running them to gain extra credits. Without having leaderboards makes this a chore.

Lets hope these updates bring GT5 into 2010 because at the moment it feels like i've gone into a timewarp and gone back in time by around 10yrs. What I mean by this isn't the quality of the graphics but the overall game design. I noted someone started a thread asking members to post their laptimes. Sorry but this is pathetic because leaderboards should of been in this game on day 1 of release.

I only wish Turn 10 and PD could join together and make a racing game. Have PD responsible for the physics, graphics but allow Turn 10 to concentrate on the online features. Sorry but Turn 10 are years ahead of PD when it comes to online gaming and so are MS.

If I put myself in Kazu-san's shoes I have to be loving all of sniping and criticism. I would feel that there was something wrong if people weren't moaning and groaning hysterically about this or that. It's like your favorite sports team. Always complaining about the GM, the manager/coach, the star player, the lack of depth, etc., etc. Basically, you all are complaining because you care. You don't like some feature? Too bad, deal with it because its not going to change because you don't like it. You're here because you care. If the game was a total piece of garbage you would not even be here. You wouldn't be wasting your time complaining about stuff that really doesn't matter.

Accept the fact that you're playing the game because you like it even though you enjoy complaining that it is not the way you would have designed it. You don't think the production team debated everything you're complaining about? I have news for you. I've been on the inside in these projects and it gets very animated and lively. This game is the Mona Lisa, for chrissake, and just because you like blondes more than brunettes, Leonardo is not going to change his mind to color her hair blonde just because you want it that way.

Kazu-san is sitting back smiling and laughing at all of us. He's ecstatic that his masterpiece has invoked so much passion. The guy is a creative genius who has total control over his creation and guys like him don't come around very often. Steve Jobs is the only other guy that comes to mind who has such total control over his projects.

Appreciate the work of art for what it is and be thankful that it is finally here. You didn't waste money buying it. For better or worse it stimulated your brain and you are here talking about it. I doubt any of you loaded it up, played it for an hour or two and then put it on the shelf forever. Do you know how many games I've bought or rented where I've done that? Far more than not.

And I think this is why i'm spending so much time on it despite all the flaws. I'm loving the fact that I can take all these cars and test them on the RING or Tsukuba.

Yeah, right. Got it all the way up there haven't you?

Just spent an hour cruising the 24 hr Ring with 15 others at a track day, went from dusk to absolute pitch dark, so dark you cant see your car from 3rd person view, only camp fires light certain sections, then to an eerie early mourning fog then noon

Breathtaking

Even drag raced a 458 down the long straight

PD could release just the 24 hr Ring with a 100 cars and sale millions

lol @ GT5's 8.3 metacritic score. it has flaws yes, but rating this under 9.0 is ....I dont know

For my opinion some special events are not fair and just to achieve on gold with luck, example Top-Gear test-track the last event on the kuebelwagen with those AI- cars running another loop on the track and kick you off, or the nascar-school last event when the AI is trying to block you, even when your allongside of them and they touch you,and you will be disqualified.
Also the prices for the race-cars are way to high, and why you need to wait for the right day to find them at the used car-dealer, why can`t you buy them new?

Anybody may say what he want, for me some parts of the game are realy frustrating and I don`t care for gold anymore just gathering enough money for the interesting cars to take them to the ring.

As I said a few month ago, a gt5p with more tracks and some racecars would have been fine for me.
By the way i am level 21

How many game franchises have an immensely popular website + forum buzzing with activity dedicated to it? Not very many. This alone is a sign of excellence.

The game has flaws, yes. But there's nothing out there on any console that provides a better driving experience than GT5. Like Earth said, if this game contained just the ring and 100 cars I'd still buy it and play it for months. That alone is an experience unmatched by anything I've ever played. I don't think I'll ever get enough of blazing around the ring.

Most reviews I read cannot be taken seriously for the sole reason that they bring up NFS Hot Pursuit which tells me that most of these reviewers have no idea what they're talking about.

Okay, I'm gonna post, can not resist. I am VERY disappointed with the game for MANY MANY reasons, most important are: Graphics, music, menus, B-spec, used car dealer, level-grinding. This game does simply not feel right or complete, the more I play it (level 25 btw.), the more disppointed I am. 5.5 years for this? For me, worst GT ever, ever, I played them all to 100%.

Im a p.c gamer and fps is my genre, since the launch of gt5 the p.c is now getting used for internet browsing only which has shocked me due to im very anal about graphics.....aka poor shadows and no AA(cough...GT5).

I get the grinding issue but when youve played p.c singleplayer games that last 6 hours im finding it a refreshing change and its nice to spend hard earned cash on a product that doesnt finish prematurely.

Most games have bugs, glitches, poor textures, bad developer decisions etc...just a shame people cant put across a positive arguement to the developers so they will take notice instead of negative rants.

Example

"To PD/Kaz
Would it be possible to address the blocky shadow issue in GT5,tends to ruin the amazing effort youve put in to create such realistic looking cars?."

Back to OP ...Love it!

this AI is really starting to annoy me
i thought its been crap the whole time but not its taking the piss
im doing s-9 right now and these cars just bloody ram me for no reason and break on the straights for no reason

This X 1000. Some of these design choices are going to evolve racing games in the future imo. Take the menu system for example, it was an incredible break from the norm of racing sim menus. To me, racing sim menus were the most boring menus in gaming.

The menu system is not meant to be entertaining or not-boring. Its purpose is to get you quickly and efficiently from one part of the game to another. The GT5 menu system does neither.

The menu is pretty self explanitory, so it is very efficient. Interface style is more along the lines that you and I disagree with each other about.

I doubt you have ever worked on UI design before. The navigation is very good, given the controller.

You do realize that most of us have played a lot of video games right? With menus? So it's not like we don't have experience using them which is kind of what is required to judge a good menu system...

Is having experience designing UI's supposed to be some prerequisite for determining whether one works well? I suppose you have to be a mechanic to be able to tell if a car drives well?

BTW the UI is horrible and it's horrible for a controller... for one thing the options should be kept to a grid system if at all possible... that car delivery truck totally falls outside that guideline as well as a lot of the A spec menues where pressing left should take you directly to the Home button but doesn't until you get to the bottom of the list.

The UI is absolutely form over function. Form is great as long as it's not at the cost of function... the GT UI is decently designed for a mouse input and better yet for a tuchscreen, but for a controller it's just bad.

This is compounded by the ridiculously repetitive nature of the functions... recieving a car requires far too many steps and confirmations... God forbid you try to buy more than 1 used car at a time (all of which require a trip to the Auto section for an oil change anyway) and buying upgrades? You have to confirm you want to buy it, confirm you want to install it then click the ok button to confirm you know it's installed...

Add onto that the fact there are noteable load times between menu screens that really make no sense as to why the game has to load anything let alone for upwards of 5 seconds for a screen with some buttons...

Sorry, the UI and menu system for this game are just bad for a console... there is no two ways about it.

Quite possibly good for other input systems but rule one of menu design is consider your platform. A good touch screen input is no good if it's on a controller only system.

IMO the UI is a mess, particularly on the GT Life screen. If I had a mouse it would be very good, but with a PS controller it's pants. As someone above said, if this game just had the 'Ring and 100 good cars I'd be very happy. The negatives - UI excepted - I can live with as I don't really use them.

Oh, and more money would be nice. Seems I've been saying that all my life though so at least that's consistent with RL.

i agree with you on the ticket system, that's just freakin annoying.. but the menu is pretty damn easy to navigate with a controller imo.

back on topic i'm liking the game a lot now, but then again i'm not at the mid 20 level where there are hardly any events left to level up. i really hope pd reads this thread and maybe can add more events or PUT XP/CREDITS IN ONLINE!!

I suppose you are saying because the main menu options are in a grid, you have to move X-Y to reach all the options. GT4 wasn't any different, better looking in some ways, but still the same to navigate.

What would be better? What is not a mess?
