Is it possible that a 22b exists in the United States with JDM specs?

The question simply arises from a frined claiming to have spotted one. I personally think its a heavily moded 2.5rs... Yes it looked like a 22b...

I believe there were 2.2L Impreza's sold in the US, but they weren't anywhere near the 22B specs. I believe it was 146hp.

It also could of been a Legacy... Not sure. I saw one that said, "2.2L", but not sure of the model.

but could someone have imported the extremeley rare 22b STi is my question

There is a possibility that someone imported the 22b STi.

Like one in a 500,000 chance.

The US did indeed get the super-sexy (yeah, right) 2.2L engine in the Impreza from 1995 to 2001 - it filled the gap between the base 110bhp 1.8L engine (front-drive, low-end models only) and the high-performance 165bhp 2.5L engine (all-wheel drive 2.5RS model only). The 2.2L put out 135bhp originally, but Subaru changed that to 137bhp in 1997 or 1998.

As you point out, the Impreza did indeed take the engine from the Legacy, which used the engine from 1990 to 1994 with both a turbocharged, 160bhp version, and a non-turbocharged, 130bhp version. When the Legacy was redesigned in 1995, it continued to use the non-turbocharged version, and it did so through 1999 (though the 2.5L from the Impreza 2.5RS became optional in 1996). As with the Impreza, the 2.2L was rated at 135bhp originally and was changed to 137bhp in 1997 or 1998.

When the Impreza was redesigned for 2002, and the Legacy for 2000, the engine was dropped, and both vehicles began to use the 165bhp 2.5L 4-cylinder as a base engine - it's now the base engine for Subaru's entire range.

But why would someone make a 2.2 litre wrx look like a 22b STi... Can one be imported M5, Wihtout much trouble.,.. Does it pass cali laws and emissions...

Why do people make a 1.8 litre Focus look like the World Rally Car? Or put "GT-R" badges onto a Nissan Micra (March)?

Rarer still is the Impreza SpecC, which comes with twin-scroll turbo and ~300hp. These occasionally find their way onto British shores. But I doubt the 22B Type passes those Californian emissions laws, which in some respects is a pity. But in other respects is just fine... More for us :D

Something to add to my simple Subaru knowledge. I really must work on it.

The simple answer is 'no', because most things (a stock Toyota Tundra included) don't pass California emissions. The only way I would assume one could have a 22B Impreza in the US is illegally (through Mexico or something) or by working really hard to change a 94-01 Impreza coupe into a 22B - as I say, the engine was already there, but it would require the replacement of most of the body plus a huge amount of engine upgrades - I'm not sure what the final numbers for the 22B were, but they certainly were not 135bhp. It's probably doable, but extremely expensive.

thanks m5... that is basically what i was thinking... My friend had simply seen an extensively modded 2.2 wrx or 2.5 rs... Thanks for the confirmation.

thanks goes out to you too famine
