Is it time to let go?

It could just as easily be that there is so much more code for the PS4 and the game is so much larger, that they need more people just for the coding. Could also be some of them are replacement hires. Either way, it's pure speculation to assume that Kaz acknowledges this or that about GT5/6 and that these new hires are some kind of evidence of a new direction. We don't know what's really going on at PD and won't until the game is previewed and/or released.

Totally agreed. No-one can truly know what GT7 has in store until it releases. What I've said is just my perception of the future of GT based on the (admittedly few) facts we know so far, and how I've pieced them together in my mind. You have a different opinion, and that's fine by me, because no-one knows really knows anything about GT7 at the moment. Your view is as valid as mine at present.

I am not letting go until they shut the servers down.
Do you mean like they did with GT5 to try to boost sales of GT6? When GT6 was released it was garbage. But it has gotten better. Naturally you cant satisfy everyone. You still have the whiners out there lamenting the course maker or even worse "shuffle" racing

No.
When GT6 was released it was garbage. But it has gotten better.
Please explain why and I might consider accepting this. For now though, I can ensure you that online is very unstable. Much worse now than what it was at launch.

Is there something wrong with that? They promise it and don't deliver for over 1.5 years... and counting. I am one of those people.

And let's not forget, their answer to modding in GT5 was to remove prize cars and DLC for everyone.

I see the other games getting really cool content packs. We get unusable VGTs. I'm supposed to be happy that I am getting useless free content instead of being given the option to buy interesting content.

I happily purchased on the DLC that was offered for GT5. If they offered good content for GT6, I might do the same.

The point is that THEY have let US go. They did pretty much from the start. We've stuck it out hoping they'd come around, but they haven't stepped up to the plate for us yet.

I happened to quite enjoy getting brand new cars, unique to the series, completely free of charge. Would I have liked some more real production cars? Of course. Did I massively enjoy the VGT cars despite the relative paucity of production cars? Absolutely. I'm not entirely sure why you're writing them off as "useless" and "unusable".

Because they are USELESS! Where do you use them? Who do you race against? What series are they allowed in? How often do you use the VGT cars, in all honesty?

Can they be used in an open lobby? Nope. No one allows them or there are no rooms set up to allow them. Can they be used in an online series? Turtle had 1 event a few months back for all of them. The Mini gets probably the most use because it is also the slowest VGT and most controllable. The lastest ones have been these overpowered beasts that are hyperfast in a game that has flawed aerodynamics. The SRT events were not enjoyable in the least, unless you're a masochist. How about the LM55? Because LMP rooms don't allow it because it's an imbalanced car. So, I am actually (not kidding) interested to hear where you use these cars.

If you know of a place where they cars can be used, I am eager to know.

Frankly, if they charged for the VGT content, I probably wouldn't pay for it because of the lack of use.

I've been working on a leaderboard sort of thing for every VGT on every track. It's been good fun so far, sort of like a weird Top Gear power test from the future. My favourites so far are probably the Golf Supersport, Subaru VIZIV, and the Lexus LF-LC.

Me also

I had considered using some of the 5000km+/348mb MoTeC data to come up with some performance equalisation for an online series,... but then I remembered I don't do online

I very rarely play online in any game, to be honest. I've had more fun pushing every last millisecond out of my own laptimes than playing with others, and the same goes for Forza, PCARS, DriveClub, and so on.

So, essentially, just time trial. How do you reconcile that the performance points are all over the map and that their performance within that envelope is also all over the map?

And fine, some people don't play online, but how do you know that you are indeed "pushing every last millisecond" if you only compare against yourself?

Online is how games sustain themselves. CoD and Battlefield aren't the juggernauts they are because of single player. Frankly, if GT had no online (like gt4 and previous) I would have walked away in the winter of 2014 when I finished the single player.

I'm not saying they're all competitive together, because they aren't. All I'm saying is that I have found a good use for them. I do want real cars, much as you do, but I don't think the VGTs are useless. They've become my most driven cars at the moment.

I've never really bothered with online, I'm perfectly happy using my own performance as a benchmark. I'm not too bothered about how other people are doing, more that I'm doing the best laptime I possibly can at my skill level and driving ability. There will always be people who can drive better and tune a car for better times, but it's not them I'm bothered about beating. I'm more interested in bettering myself.

The reason why I was such a big fan of the MoTeC update was because it made it so much easier to get an eclectic time. Every test run I do is a 10 lap session (5 at the 'ring), then use the eclectic time as a target, and the deviation between the eclectic and my times as an indicator of my ability/consistency with that car - but ultimately it gives me a lap time less limited by my own ability...

... slightly back to the topic at hand, since my PS3's laser went down the crapper the other week I've been meaning to fix it ... The 2 VGT's revealed recently have spurred me on to get this sorted, so for me, it's not time to let go, it's time to invest another £40!

I have to say, I did get bored of racing games in general for a bit, as they're my most played genre by far and I just wanted to give them a rest for a bit. After a long while not really bothering with them at all, between this VGT news and the Forza 6 demo, the racing bug has come back and bit me with a vengeance.

My overall opinion is that while other games provide a better complete package, GT excels in providing an arena in which to pursue the solitary goal of bettering only your lap time and nothing else, with an astonishing track list and a massive (if inconsistently detailed and unevenly distributed) car list. I'm excited for GT7, and Forza 6, and pretty much any upcoming racing games. The more the merrier! :D

It's easier to just download the game and run it off the drive. Might be cheaper too. All your data carries over. I did that about a year ago. I wanted the 15th anniversary box as a collector's item but I didn't want it staying in the drive in the event that something would happen to it. Just a suggestion.

Good shout, actually didn't think about that option. However, the part's on order now, replacing the laser is no biggy, besides which I'd like to give Red Dead Redemption another run through.

Coming back to this..

How do you reconcile that the performance points are all over the map and that their performance within that envelope is also all over the map?

Please excuse the crap graph and incomplete dataset (I don't have my laptop, adn I still have lots of laps to put in)...

This is a plot of average speed (mph) against stock PP, across my 40+km combined test lap, with a linear trendline through it. Given that it's not separated out by tyre type it's still pretty linear and predictable, despite the 2X (at just under 800pp) is under performing because I can't drive it for toffee, for me it's a good reflection of the capabilities of each car. Also, this is the kind of stuff I like to do with the game, when I don't have the chance to get behind my wheel.

After 6 months of playing DriveClub, I tried going back to GT6, & I couldn't. Too much aliasing, bland graphics (by comparison), & terrible sounds! I think I've finally let go.

Then the conclusion seems that simulators are not for you, but arcades are.

Driveclub initially has a very good sounds. But recently some of the cars has its sounds recycled from others, often times not true to real life. Still better than GT6 but still...

If GT had no Multiplayer, I would have stopped playing it a long time ago. The multiplayer aspect of the game saves it for me. My friends are not on as often either.

I only go on to drag race with friends some nights.

So no GT6 will never be completely dead for me.

There will always be times when I go back on.

Most of my friends I met through PSN and GT5 multiplayer way back when.

Only GT can get bring back those magical times of playing with long time friends and tuning and drag racing having fun. This is how I'd want to remember GT.

The best times I had on GT5 although GT6 has given us a similar experience it will never be golden like it was on GT5.

Thankyou PD if for nothing else for giving me magical moments of fun and joy with GT online. Nothing could beat the fun factor of GT online.

I don't play the game offline or singleplayer anymore. I get bored of some VGT's being so expensive credit wise. They give me limited fun and limited use.

Updates don't excite me as much as they use to do.

When GT6 came out I though DLC monthly was going to make GT good again. By adding nostalgic and modern european, american brands or models of sports cars and super cars missing from the game.

Also the performance tuning system from GT5 is what I miss. I miss performance tools for timing my car and speed.. Transmission tuning, suspension, camber, when everything made difference but you could test it and see the result of your cars performance. Now its tuning blindly with no fun factor. Although that brings new challenges and competition.

... I don't have enough money and can't bring myself to play the offline GT6 career mode to make money ... It is a waste of credits for me. ... If there is a new update or new VGT or content being added it doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to buy it. ... So I'm at a stage where even new VGT content or update to the game doesn't excite me as much as it use to do.

The key to the VGT's is to get them with the seasonals, they're not hard to obtain and it saves you a million credits each time. You may never use the car, but at least it gives you the option to use it later if you want.

I do think it's a bad idea to not include the VGT seasonals into the offline portion of the game, so at least people who didn't have the game when a VGT was released still have the opportunity to get it for free.

In GT6 you are clueless with no performance testing tool. That is what I miss and is why I would go back to GT5 in a heartbeat.

The Motec data export in GT6 is a far, far greater tool than a simple 0-400-1000 time. It's just not as slick to use since you have to export the file and analyse it away from the game.

I finally let go of GT6 at the end of 2014. Traded in my PS3 with all PS3 games. The standards being carried over from game to game just killed it for me with the GT series. I wish PD and KY all the best with GT7. If they can do something surprisingly miraculous with GT7, I will consider picking up a PS4 and GT7.

That's not the problem for me. The VGT's don't excite me like other people. They are a few minutes of fun and nothing more. Then they are limited in their use and get boring quickly and not used again. So I played the seasonals to get some VGT, but as new VGT's get added my excitement for even completing seasonal events to win a VGT for free still isn't going to cure my hunger for what GT misses.

What I want to see is PD focused like T10 on actually modeling DLC and releasing car packs and adding more cars that are non existent in the game. Real life cars, like cars you can drive in Forza. Old and new car brands, sports and super car. Wider selection and variety of European / American brands and models.

Ans again the Motec data export doesn't interest me for all its hassle. I prefer having an in game performance tuning tool and being able to see the physics at work. PD claim physics are better than GT5. I'm not saying GT6 is worse, its obviously in some aspects simulates more physics that GT5 doesn't. My point is I want to see GT6 tuning physics at work with a native built in tuning tool. GT5 speed test showed the physics at work and every change to your car setup affected performance.

I want to be able to see the performance results, speed and timing of my car.

Even though I read the boards daily I never write or post. I am more of lurker, but I would like to bring up for discussion a topic in regards to what exactly Gran Turismo means to me, you and of all us. With Forza 6 just weeks away from release and still refusing to buy an xbox I'm starting to question myself a lot . Forza 6 looks AMAZING.
Also like a lot of you I started playing gt1 when it first came out..I was a young probably 11 or 12. Played with my friends for hours..great memories.
Then got gran turismo 2 one Christmas. I remember playing that all Christmas break with my dad ..one of my favorite memories.
My first ps2 came with gt3 remember being blown away with the graphics. And playing until my fingers hurt talking to girlfriends on the phone and listening to my teenage music in my room in high school. Memories.
Then gt4 came...i guess I was 20 or 21 or so. I was an adult and that's around the time my first son came. Gt4 was glorious. I remember my fiance thinking I'm nuts while playing hours and hours or taking photos or watching b spec Bob race for me or falling asleep with the photomode slideshow and then later winning eendurance races with blistered thumbs. Gt4 Felt less like a game more like a lifestyle.Memories, memories ,memories.

All four of the first games coincided with very important phases in my life. From pre-teen to teen to adult hood. From middle school, to high school to starting a family not to mention the Playstion upgrades . I grew up with that controller in my hand , with the tune shop, the the legacy tracks, the lounge music jazz...and I don't want to let go. I really don't. I'm 31 now. I have 3 kids..( and yes they play too and that's a trip in itself!) I am married I have a real job. I still play gt6 I'm the constant quest to find the "perfect car" or the perfect tune.
I like to read these forums becaus I see a lot of you like me, but I can't help but feel like a lot of us are missing out on making new memroies and playing a better game because we can't let go. I want that feeling of a new playstion and a new GT so bad, I'm afraid to buy anything else. Why...am I afraid I'll like it more? Is it time to let go?

Edit: I think the point I'm trying to make with all that is GT is more than just a game to a lot of us. Its part of who we are. How we grew up, and deeply intertwined with our soul, but because of all that I am refusing to try and get what could be an even better game.

Awesome post....brought back some memories.I myself like you have played from GT1 to GT 6 and looking forward to GT 7 . I now play with my son who is 19 who beats me quite regularly...Growing up with GT not too easy to change to another game .....Age 52 and still love SIM RACING.......

This brings me to a point that I think many people miss that they shouldn't. Performance points are a means to balance the game. If they don't actually do that, they why bother using them? They do a terrible job of balancing.

But, if this turns your crank, have at'er. I will say though that if players are reverting to this type of tangent to enjoy the game, then the GT live development team has done a terrible job. If they had worked for an EA, or Activision, etc, they'd have all been fired for mistreating such an important franchise.

That's not the problem for me. ....

Sorry, I must have missed that during all your post edits  ;)

It's not a question of "reverting" to this to enjoy the game, it's simply something that I enjoy doing "when I don't have the chance to get behind my wheel.", for sure it doesn't float everyones' boat, I wouldn't expect it to.

I think it's great when games do offer other forms of entertainment alongside the core game play. Data analysis happens to be interesting to me, some people might enjoy the photography aspect of the game, or creating liveries (in games that have that option)... which is all good. Doesn't hurt to exercise brain cells or promote creativity alongside sitting on your ass driving cars all evening

DriveClub can be more sim than GT in some areas, that's for sure. At least it has convincing lift off oversteer. Anyway, I got bored with DC very quickly as I have no wheel for it.
