What do you guys think of the Isuzu VehiCROSS. Most of the people I have talked to have either loved it or hated it. I believe Isuzu made them for 3 years 99-01.

Unfortunately for motorists, the VehiCROSS was indeed produced from 1999 to 2001. It wouldn't be so bad - it's ugly, but it managed to slip under the radar of all the thirteen-year-old design experts - save for the fact that Isuzu attempted to sell it, new, starting at $30,350. I would consider it the biggest ripoff of any car, ever - so did the US buying public who, along with staying away by the millions, managed to get the car cancelled after just three years. On a related note, depreciation is extremely steep - the 2001 you could've bought for $31,000 is now worth just $20,000 if you're lucky.

The engine was well enough - 215hp 3.5L V6 from the Trooper - but all other specs were a disaster. In truth, this was a Jeep Wrangler competitor for nearly double its price. When Isuzu finally collapses after they can't manage to sell enough Ascenders, we will be able to look back and blame this (and the Impulse, and Stylus, and Axiom, and GM not caring what happened to Isuzu, and poor engineering, and overall incompetence - but mostly this). In fact, Consumer Guide gave the vehicle 17 out of 70, the single lowest rating I've ever seen them give. By the way, this was the only stock SUV to ever have a carbon-fiber hood standard. Phear

EDIT: I was fortunate enough to find this, the total number produced by colour for North America. Total is 4,153:

Supposedly, in Europe, Japan and Australia, less than 500 were ever sold, so there's less than 4,700 on Earth. Thank God

Believe it or not, there are several of those things roaming free here in Delaware. I hate them. They were the first hint of the "new school" of cars that look like anything else in the world, so long as they don't look like cars. In this case, they made a car that looks like a tacky cross-trainer hiking/running shoe. Sneakers being possibly the most over-designed product on the face of the planet, it doesn't make a great inspiration for a car.

Why in God's name were they trying to sell it for 30 grand?

They were never sold new here - I've seen one or two grey imports. Isuzu only sell large trucks under their own name here - their Rodeo ute/light truck is sold as a 'Holden' and they sell heaps of those things.

Big engine, decent utility. If the competiton was selling for $30k it would make sense, but that's true in all cases.

Amigo (1990-1994, 1998-2000); Rodeo Sport (2001- ):

You got them both as the Holden Frontera? I thought a 'ute' was a pickup truck, or something with a full bed.

No - that wasn't the vehicle. We did get that one as the Frontera, but the Rodeo I was referring to was this one.

Old model.

We got 'old model' in the form of the similar Hombre based off the US Chevrolet S-10/GMC Sonoma, which ironically I saw today, which is odd because they're rarer than uncooked steak, especially in extended-cab trim... wish I could have one of those.

Mmm - just tidy up that little red X there.

They're very common here. Tradesman's genuine work ute of choice - although we're seeing a lot more Falcon utes, particularly since it's gone genuine cab-chassis.

I disargee, think the upcomming Chrysler Crossfire, Chrysler Pasifica, Buick Rainier, Pontiac GTO and the SSR are rip offs.

how about $40,000 for a cadillac catera.. is that a rip off?
i think it is

Cateras were produced from 1997 to 2001 - they aren't still being made, and used ones rarely beat $20,000. They started around $32,000 and the only way you could get it over $40,000 would be to really pack on the options, if it was possible at all - $40k was in keeping with the vehicles Cadillac was attempting to compete with at the time, though.

All of these cars are well-placed within current price ranges (except the SSR which is without competitors) for the amount of kit they offer. Care to clarify?
The Crossfire looks promising. It's going to sell for USD 35K, right?

Crossfire starts at $33,620 and comes with a standard 215-horsepower 3.2L V-6. One of its class rivals, the Mercedes SLK, starts at $39,600 with a 192-horsepower 2.3L I-4S; another rival, the Audi TT coupe, starts at $32,500 and comes with a 180-horsepower 1.8L I-4T - so the Crossfire's well-priced.

Plus it looks much better than the SLK and TT. WHich is the most important factor in buying a car. Especially when you wish to show off your middle-age crisis.
