JGTC S3 Application Thread (GT500 spots open only)

Ok, so I have my 4 guys of thrust here for the car testing job for S2. Here's the list :

GT500

- Casio
- fasj6418

GT300

- Nuvolari
- jctraduz

I will contact you tomorrow via PM on GTP with all the info you need to know to get started. I must also have your msn contacts, I think in the case of fasj6418 & jctraduz that's already done. :)

hOt6o4bOi there's no problem at all if you want to be full-time, if you tell me you'll stick around from the start until the end it's all good. Like fasj6418 said you can't have the exact same car but you can have the same model and of the same year, so it's pretty much the same car!!! But there's no such thing as quitting because you can't beat holl01 or whatever, if you say you will finish the entire season all is good and right away I'll enter you full-time with a teammate. :)

gt500 please, full time

One question, are there going to be teams again? If so I need a teammate and I guess if not then I am still in 👍

Awesome report, though it makes me want to run in GT300 with the Garaiya. I love that car.

Great job Nuvolari.

Figured you'd appreciate it with your real world racing background. I'm sure you know how hard proper testing is.

That Garaiya is one sticky little car. Too bad there aren't skid pads in GT4 like in GT3. Lots to be learned driving around in circles so long as I don't get dizzy.

That's awesome. So far I have about 40 times scribbled on a piece of paper

Now not only do Fasj and I have to get all these cars perfect, we have to make an even better race report!

But that is a nice idea on Super Speedway, should we give that a go Fasj?

(Groan) I just went back and re-read it and found several dangling participles. Oh well, I made a couple of mistakes in 1983 too.

yes, we will have a pretty report too:tup: i´m just too busy with WRS this weekend. but this coming week i´ll do all the other tests i want with the cars... speedway might be nice, we are seting up them only for mixed tracks, but it all depends on the final track list, because we have to set up the cars for those tracks...

Attached below is the reviewed and corrected report, which becomes final and is in the public domain.

I've also stuck in an old photo that might be of interest. It was taken at the Lockheed wind tunnel test facility in the early '80's, and may be of John Paul senior's highly modified 935 turbo with which he and his son and Rolf Stommelen won the Daytona 24 hours, but I can't remember exactly. It could be another one of JP's many cars. The guy at the left rear is Lee Dykstra, and that's me leaning over the car looking for a good spot to place the pressure taps.

The thing that makes this photo interesting to me is that the Pauls had a seemingly bottomless pit of money. Test time at the tunnel was very expensive and they bought three or four days worth on the occasion when the photo was taken. And they were a pretty strange group, hanging around staring at everything.

Turned out that their main source of income was from a huge underground marijuana farm in North Georgia. Subsequently they got caught and went to jail, then during the appeal process the crazy JP senior chased down one of the witnesses and shot holes in him, and senior ended up under the jail and I think he's still there.

Awesome picture!

The car testing report is great, too.

It really is a funny story about the Pauls, both senior and junior. I was busy in one of the "facilities" in the pits at Daytona one year and written on the wall was "John Paul is a ******g a*****e !!", all in caps. Nice handwriting too.

Always wondered who it was that wrote it.

Okay, one more final update on the GT300 car testing report. My friend Soyfu raised some interesting questions about the cars in S1 configuration, so I did one last test, which may offer a bit more insight. The addition is near the end just below the results of test five, and reads, "In comparison, terminal velocity for each car, in the original S1 configuration,...".

Here it is:

Okay, my good friend at VTRacing has brought to my attention a tip about a mysterious characteristic of the Garaiya that I was completely unaware of. So I will be repeating some or all of the testing for that car only. The tip from VTR made a major difference in the Garaiya's top speed and it may make a difference elsewhere.

So, I will be updating the test report once more, and hopefully that will do it.

Just stand by........

The following is a description of the nature of the Garaiya that has caused re-testing:

The tach is a completely misleading indicator of the engine power characteristic caused by the combination of the turbo and the restrictor. The engine seems to go "flat" beyond about 6500 rpm indicated and the actual torque peak is somewhere between about 4000 and 7000 rpm. But it's hard to tell just where that torque peak is. The red line and shift indicator lamp flash is far past where the shift points should be. I ran some new preliminary tests at the oval with the gearing set at 290 kph, and the car was much quicker, though it didn't feel any different. VTR's information was most apparent at the Test Course, where the Garaiya didn't seem to care how high the gearing was set, it would run 10 km faster than before with the gearing at 330 kph than when geared to just come up to redline. Very strange.

So driving the Garaiya is like driving a tractor, where torque is everywhere but the combination of rpm and torque, which are the two components of horsepower, is actually reduced ABOVE about 6500 or 7000 rpm. So anyone driving the Garaiya should shift gears at quite a bit less than max rpm to get the best out of it.

Anyway, I'll get the re-write done tomorrow and get it posted.

Re-testing done. See the attached report if you like.

JGTC S2 horsepower setting recommendations per the new data:

Wedsport 299 bhp +21 bhp
Cusco 335 bhp +22 bhp
Apex 341 bhp +23 bhp
Amemiya 315 bhp +13 bhp
Garaiya 324 bhp + 5 bhp

Soyfu
Wow, that's a big change.

BTW, how does one pronounce the name of that car? Gar-EYE-ah?

Perfect, Soyfu.

Yeah, big change. The tip that I missed was the automatic shift point from first to second gear on rolling starts, before the display says START, which was maybe a bit less than 7000 rpm indicated. Running the engine even to there is a waste of rpm and will slow it down. If you want to try a quick test to show what happens, go to the Test Course and put it in the highest gear you can and take off, shifting at maybe 6000 rpm and see what top speed you get at the end of that first straight. Then play with it and gear it down step by step and see what happens when you get to what would be the max rpm for about any other car.

Too bad no one got to drive it in Season One.

So the basic rule for the Gar-EYE-ah is shift it before 6500.

VTR knew all about the torque curve but I sure didn't.

Yep, it was actually my car for a few days way back when I first started this series in season 0, (before I got bumped to GT500). I noticed the benefit of short-shifting then. It's fairly common for turbo cars, particularly if they have a turbo restrictor, and there are a few in GT4 that you have to watch for and make a judgment about whether it's worth revving it out. But I haven't found anything else where the penalty for going to the redline is so great.

The Garaiya was used in season 0 by Kolyana in GT300. She discovered that trait independently from me.

I probably should have kept my mouth shut and run in GT300 with a 350hp Garaiya....  :p

Strangely enough, when I was testing in the last couple of weeks.

For no reason, I picked the Garaiya as car of choice in the GT300 class, and ran it round Apricot Hill. A very similar track, in style, to Grand Valley.

And I did find that if I shifted early I was faster, but also and maybe more importantly, smoother! This allowed me to get 9-11 laps out of medium tyres, as this was my aim anyway (to preserve the tyres) I was chuffed.

The power-band in this car didn't, to be honest, even enter my conscious thoughts.

Weird!
