Why are you using a Dedicated Server for GTPlanet?

Is it because of it's massive size. I was just thinking wouldn't some of the problems dissapear if you were using a non dedicated server host?

I might be confusing, sorry.

Why would problems disappear if the server wasn't dedicated? That doesn't make sense.

Jordan, said GTP is having problems because of the new server.
To use a Server for a website you have to sign up for Dedicated Hosting Package(s).

You have to pay like $100 + for a dedicated host. I'm not 100% sure about Dedicated host's so I might be incorrect.

I just got this while editing a post.

There seems to have been a slight problem with the GTP Forums database.

Edit

But it was much longer.

Apparently the server is a lemon so that's why we've been having problems with the server from what I can guess.

The opposite of "Dedicated server" is "Shared server". I.e. with a shared server, many sites run off the server, and the server needs to load-balance. With a dedicated server, the server runs only GTPlanet and no other sites, so Jordan gets all the power of his server. It is more expensive, but this is a financial commitment that Jordan has made to running GTP.

Jordan has been working on solving the issues that he is having with running the new server, and as a part of this, there are errors occuring. This is a live site, and therefore each change that Jordan makes will either make things better or break the site. By and large, I think we'd agree that the performance and reliability are improving all the time, and that Jordan is doing a very good job with a very complicated problem.

As Giles said, a dedicated server is really the only option for a site of this size. There is so much traffic and so many things to process (especially with dynamic forum pages such as this), it takes a whole computer to be dedicated to just that task. I am in the process of looking for another new server, one which will be more capable and hopefully more stable. (At this point, it would just be nice to have a server that could stay up for more than 6 hours at a time!)

Have you thought of putting up banners to generate some type of money to support this site? I don't know how much it costs to maintain a site of this size, but I imagine it costs a fair amount.

I, for one, wouldn't mind it.

well it would take some getting used to.

Jordan has elected to go with pop-up adds instead of banners. One of the perks of registering is that the pop-ups no longer occur. Hit log out and go to the main gtplanet page, you'll see a number of pop-ups appear.

I for one would rather send Jordan a chunk of cash every month (paypal?) than to have banners on the site.

Various members have offered this to Jordan, but he's nice enough to pay for GTPlanet out of his own pocket. If this site ever comes close to what Granturismo.com is going through, I'd certainly shell out the cash.

Yeah, I'd hit Jordan up with some cash on a regular basis through Paypal!

I don't have any more need for GTPlanet clothing or collectables. :)
Jordan, is there any way you can push your GTP products more? Get them more recognized here?

PayPal Jordan, I'd love the chance to be able to help you out!

Think about it. ;)

With GTPlanet's hosting with a hefty average Joe Bloggs price per month Jordan, I'm surprised you have put that much money into this site!

I'd like to say now I know how much it really costs to run this site I am absolutely flabagasted that this is a solo effort in funding. Now I know how much I've just taken GTPlanet for granted.

Yup, Jordan need's around of an applause.

I'm just guessing here.

$10 for yearly domain
$200's for the dedicated server
$10 a month/year for vB.( $160 For the licence(only pay once) )

Something around that.

Thanks, alot J!
