Ferrari lured him over with the promise of a competitive car. They didn't hold up their end of the bargain, so why should Alonso?I thought Alonso said he was going to retire as a Ferrari driver. Guess things change.
Vettel's announcement feels like McLaren in 2012 beating Hamilton to the punch in announcing his departure.Alonso not confirmed at McLaren, I haven't actually heard that he's leaving Ferrari from the stallion's mouth yet despite all the obvious conjecture.
Indeed, FP3 showed that only Marussia and Ceterham will struggle to eclipse the best time from the SF14-Toyota.Super Fomula is one of the fastest feeder series out there - it's quicker than GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5. Also, the teams haven't done a qualifying simulation yet, so Rosberg's FP1 times aren't really representative.

That remains to be seen. For all we know, Vettel is replacing Raikkonen. So where does Alonso go now mclaren? And Button retires?

It's believed he signed a pre-contract with Ferrari that said that if he activated an exit clause in his Red Bull contract, a Ferrari deal would automatically start. Or it would at least give them the right to make the first offer. One more curveball, McLaren wanted Vettel as well so perhaps he is actually going there?...
Yeah but it's all basically confirmed, Alonso isn't going to Redbull so Mclaren is the only option.Alonso not confirmed at McLaren, I haven't actually heard that he's leaving Ferrari from the stallion's mouth yet despite all the obvious conjecture.
He's expensive, there's a lot of talent out there that's younger and despite his clear skill he's not an easy driver to live with. Red Bull's announcement has caught a lot of people on the hop I think... and it's left Alonso in an awkward place.
It's a feeder series to the big 3s factory efforts(Honda, Toyota, Nissan)but it does have decent national following such as Indycar.Indeed, FP3 showed that only Marussia and Ceterham will struggle to eclipse the best time from the SF14-Toyota.
But Super Formula isn't a feeder series. It's the top level of single seaters in Japan, a senior national single seater series. SF is to Japan what Indycar is to USA.
Only way it would happen is if one of their contracts got bought out, which would be easily possible with a Spanish sponsor that would inevitably come with an Alonso move. Not that I want Bottas or Massa to lose their seat, they're both doing a fantastic job at Williams, but I think Alonso would be very interesting to watch if he was at Williams next year.
Not going to happen though.

It was a relief to see the car could be fixed in time for qualifying without any gearbox damage and a lap that put him at least on the front row. Hopefully no reliability problems for the race. I want Lewis to win the pole trophy though so it has now become a bit more harder to achieve now. He's still on the front row, good time from Rosberg.
