This typhoon may not only affect Japan. If they get stuck there too long, they may have to bump Russia a week later.
Which would make it harder to get to Austin. It's more likely that the FIA will cancel the race to prevent it from interfering with the schedules for other races.

2 weeks wouldn't be enough between Sochi and Austin if there was somehow a one week delay?

The rain has hit Suzuka. This will be a wet weather race.

Mercedes' Twitter says it would be Inters if race is now and getting heavier.

My mistake. I miscounted.

Still, the FIA doesn't like making changes to one event if it's going to affect another in some way, even if it means both races can be run. The teams won't like it, either, since flights to and accommodation in Sochi would have been booked months ago. Likewise, the cars will have come off a three-race away stint (SGP-JPN-RUS), and will be using those three weeks to turn their cars around for Austin, Interlagos and Abu Dhabi. If they lose a week, there is less that they can do.

Dats alot of water already. Its not just a wet surface, it has a layer of water thru out pit lane it seems.

If the radar posted above is correct, the weather shouldn't be that bad for that long.

The Suzuka pit lane is notorious for flooding. Qualifying was a washout a few years ago, so the bored engineers amused themselves by building paper boats and racing them down pit lane.

I wonder if anyone will Maldonado the boats?

They don't look as bad as the Caterham image.

Looks "do-able" on the longer shots. Standing water isn't the only thing that may affect the race; Race Control will suspend the race in the event that the medical helicopter is unable to operate. Looking at the weather I'm hoping that the race runs 'normally' before the really heavy stuff sets in :\

That doesn't look bad at all. The race starts in 4 hours, I cannot see much rain from that shot apart from in the puddles.

Racecar Engineering @RacecarEngineer23s
30-50mph winds expected at Suzuka Circuit approx 1600hrs, building to poss 140mph by 2100. High level of probability.

What does that mean for us?

Think of the all the downforce they could get with a 140mph headwind
0% chance of them racing the full race if that's the forecast. F1 would get a huge backlash if they chose to.

2100 is 9pm local time Suzuka. They wouldn't be running that late....

1600 is 4pm, which would be middle of the race. It won't be easy for them to run in it but it is possible.

Edit: Honda refused to adjust race start by even one hour, so if anything goes wrong, they are to be blamed.

And F1 did not go for a contingency plan which makes this race likely to be a race to halfway (or less). 2 laps under the safety car... hmm, wouldn't that also be a huge controversy?

I edited, but the FIA had planned to move the race up to an 1100 local time start, but Honda wouldn't allow it to be moved up at all..

Judging by the conditions so far, it would be extremely difficult to hold the race at any point today. Yesterday wasn't an option, because everyone needed to get through FP3 and qualifying.

Doesn't the FIA have an option to set the grid based off practice time or points if such a situation arised?

So anyone know what Rosbergs performances are in rain conditions? Can Hamilton pull this off? Alonso will be a threat in the rain for 1st.

Do they abandon the weekend or reschedule?
