for you people who love downloading stuff to make your life simpler here is stuff to stay away from
1. PTP programs
2. anything pirated
3. programs with really wierd names and you have no idea of what it does

Just to let you know, P2P progs. will not do anything wrong as long as you use them to 'acquire' legal content. (i.e., music which p2p programs are most used for)

Why would you want to stay away from programs with weird names? Why not look into them and see what the program actually does? I'm sorry, but your advice isn't really helpful. We already have a policy of no talking about piracy on GTP so that goes without saying. As TS said, some peer to peer programs can be used legally for good. Just because there have been some that are used for downloading illegal content doesn't mean the technology itself is bad or illegal.

Given your past history with computing related topics on this forum (stating Mozilla Firefox is evil without any proof or knowledge what you were talking about and openly asking for advice on how to hack) I don't think your advice is worth much. You repeatedly tried to argue and stick to your guns in your "firefox evil" thread despite being told nicely that Firefox itself was not an evil or bad program and that actually it was one of the best pieces of software available. Several people in that thread have much more knowledge on the subject of computing and software than you seem to have, yet you didn't take their advice.

Alot of weird named programs are great for example; "foobar2000", "Crap Cleaner", "Picasa2" and heck even "Firefox" sounds weird, but we can't live without them! :D

oh sorry i just wanted to help oh well what i meant by wierd names is something like Niew or Nemu, i didn't know hacking was illegal so sorry, and i guess i just have really bad luck with the internet

Your suggestions are good, but you need to elaborate on them.

As others have already mentioned, P2P programs are not always used for piracy. For example, most Linux distributions encourage the use of torrents to obtain their operating system in order to ease the load on their servers.

However, there are some P2P programs, such as KaZaA, that are known to install 3rd-party applications (classified as spyware/adware) on your computer. Read the reviews on the P2P program and only download the trusted ones. Of course, don't use it for piracy.
Unless you're a pirate, then you have no choice.

Hopefully, you've learned a lot from the three threads (edit: 4 threads) you've started in the Computers and Web Design forum. There's certainly a wealth of information in these threads. You can usually trust what others have posted, and if any of the information is wrong, someone will quickly correct them. Perhaps you'll have better luck on the internet if you take some of our advice. To sum them up:

* Make sure antivirus and antispyware are running at all times. Prevention is better than trying to repair damage.
* Use Firefox. It is not evil. If you don't like it, use Opera. It is also not evil.
* Hacking is illegal.
* P2P is most commonly used for piracy, but it doesn't mean piracy is its only purpose.
* Applications with weird names are not necessarily bad. But before downloading a program, make sure you are clear of its purpose.
* Firefox is not evil.

foobar2000??? Isn't that one of those annoying popup toolbar POS?

You're thinking of FooBar.

foobar2000 is a simple media player that's very lightweight (low memory usage).

oh, does it have the same streaming capabilities as WMP? I regularly listen to FreshFM via the net, as I can't pick it up where I am, so I need something that will stream WMP streams.
