I'm thinking Knighthood...
Its an interesting point none the less. I don't deny Phelps could be the greatest olympian ever but swimming events seems to be over represented at the Olympics. Swimming is as much of a sport as Tennis yet you can only hope to win 2 medals in the entire olympic games. Its quite simple impossible to win 19 Olympic medals playing Tennis every year. At best you can win single and doubles equalling two medals every four years. Then it would take you(or Roger Federer) 8 summer olympics or a span of 32-35 years(after you turned 16)(or more if you turn 16 the year after a summer olympics) to do this. Quite simply impossible even for the best player ever. At the age of 40 you just have no chance against a 23 year pro who is top ten in the world.
If tennis players had more opportunities to win medals they would do those events. .
But they really only have 1 or 2 which is singles and doubles and rarely do people win both.
Phelps is a phenomenal swimmer so naturally he will get medals in all events he enters.
You can make a generic statement for most other sports.
X is a phenomenal Y....but Phelps has more events available to him to win.
Tennis, Basketball, Soccer and others are one shot medals. There are no medals for dunking, aces, or individual goals.
I certainly didn't mean to belittle his efforts and achievements, but someone who does 1 or 2 events in a games is always going to lose in total medal count to someone who can do 8 events.I feel like you are downplaying the achievement of mastering many forms.
In Beijing he did the 200 freestyle, the 4x100 freestyle & the 4x200 freestyle. 100 & 200 butterfly. That's at least 2 races of each stroke that he does and 2 medley races too (200 & 400.)Granted, Phelps has all his medals in swimming, so it is not nearly as impressive as golding in swimming, gymnastics, and shot-put would be, but he isn't competing in multiple races of the same stroke.

If you take Carl Lewis. He got a load of medals, in 2 different disciplines, yet there were still only 4 events he could do. There is no 4x200 in running or else he would have golded that too probably.
But they don't all compete in doubles, so I suppose you're incorrect.
INCORRECT again.
And he has done so better than any swimmer, man or woman, is history. Recognize or Diminish? Your choice.
How do you propose a TEAM SPORT has legit competition for multiple medals? How many tickets would be sold for a Corner Kick Medal competition? Or a Volleyball Setting competition? Are you serious?
Diminishing any athlete who competes in an event with multiple medals available (gymnastics, swimming, track and field - specifically sprinters and distance runners) because in soccer only one men's team can win and one women's team can win and that's it - is beyond shortsided imo, and demonstrates a possible complete misunderstanding of what Olympic Competition is all about - REGARDLESS of the event or discipline.
Roger Federer did not choose tennis over, say, gymnastics because of Gold Medal scarcity or duplicity, so making this a factor is astonishing.
IF Federer wins say, THREE or perhaps four Olympic medals in a row.. say three singles titles and the only doubles event he entered - he would be considered on par with Swimmers who have a closet full of medals by any right minded sports fan.
That said... Olympic Medals are THE pinnacle of a swimmer's career. Olympic medals are NOT the highest achievement for swimmers, footballers, basketball players, and the list goes on.
Get real.
MUSC4EVERSo its been easily the best dat for team GB today with two golds and two bronze..we have three brits competing in the pool tonight..will we have more medals?!
Nah, you don't sit down in swimming.![]()

100m runners don't try to do the distance with different running styles - there isn't a 100m backwards, a 100m jumping with both legs at once and a 100m speedmince to go with the fastest 100m style of "running like a bastard".
akmuqOh, and no new swimming records, I think the super-suits are banned.
Nah, you don't sit down in swimming.![]()
Technically it was the inverted backstroke, as they were swimming on their fronts 💡Silver medal for Jamieson in the 200m backstroke!!![]()
Because we all type in caps when were calm don't we.Angry? Emotional?
Interesting you come to that conclusion with simple text. Must be how you interpreted things. Not my problem nor can I do anything about that.
Ever heard of TEAM TENNIS? High School, College, Pro.

So.....I've been offered a free ticket to see the women's quarter final football at the stadium near my house with a free meal and free bar. But I've got to be up early the next morning.GAH! It's so hard to say no!
women's quarter final football
And the Chinese, Indonesian and South Korean Badminton teams have been thrown out for throwing games. Seriously?
They have been thrown out for delibrately (spell?) trying to lose they're matches, ive seen the footage a few times and they're making basic mistakes over and over again, the match ref had to disqualify both in the end, they were doing so they could manipulate the draw..
