Lol, i promise you Chris, once you get into it you will wonder how you ever played with auto.
Start in a slow car on a track you know well and just practice, watch the times come down and the smile come up.

R2 = Acceleration
L2 = Brake
X = Gear up
Square = Gear down

I only used automatic once on a shifter kart race because the track was tiny and I was unable to shift as rapidly as the AI...

Thanks for the advice, phil. I'm on DS3 as well and although I've been playing since GT2, never really got myself together to practice manual. Mostly because I never managed to find a button setup (for the gearbox) to my liking. I'll try yours.

Anyone got other button setups that I could try for the manual?
Also, what about direction? Stick or d-pad? I've always used the d-pad, as I can't be as precise with the stick (which is, surely, faster).

Manual gears will always be faster so there's no comparison.

Unless you are drag racing, its incredibly annoying to drive an automatic. Doing the Nurb' in an automatic, dear lord.... "I said SHIFT! No, no no, no shift down, go down!! Annnnd I hit the wall."

When I used the DS3, I mapped L = downshift, R = upshift, L1 = brakes, R1 = throttle. To be clear, I mean the paddles for throttle and brake, buttons just above them for shifting.

stick for steering. More precise, once you get the hang of it, but each to his own.

True that. It's surely faster and more rewarding but I think you need quite a bit of practice to make the Nordschleife (especially parts such as Ex-Mühle or Pflanzgarten) with a manual. Without crashing. In anything above 600pp.

I started using manual since i read this thread. I got to say its a lot, lot more fun driving like this. It was little kinky in the beginning but in an hour it felt already natural. Now im wondering how i ever could drive with automatic

Im still struggling with driving race cars like 908 etc. Too fast for me. But now my goal is to win the Le Mans race with manual gearbox

Manual always, much more control over coming out of and going into corners. But I would never begrudge someone using automatic. It's a pain to get used to and if I used the DS3 I'd use automatic but with the wheel and the flappy paddles it's great fun.

Yes mate the stick!
I used to be a D-pad (directional buttons) user and auto until GT5, can't believe how i could drive like that now.
I may as well have been playing Ridge Racer!

I use auto gearbox and the ds3 contoller directional buttons instead of the stick. Sounds medieval i know but it has got me platinum in gt6 and only need to gold the red bull challenge to platinum gt5. For that i need to learn to drive all over agian using the wheel. My bad for developing such a bad habit....

Yes, i was able to do very well with D-pad and auto its just that it feels so detatched, with stick and manual it gives far more control and responsibility which in turn gives better feelings when you nail it.

Good luck with the wheel, i miss mine, had to get rid of it as nowhere to set it up.

I use AT. I used to drive MT in GT3 and 4, but after a long break from GT and only getting GT5 a couple of months ago and just stuck to AT. I do use a DS3, and use square and X for throttle brake as i allways have done.
I probably could use MT again without too much hassle, but i just don't really see the need. Atm i play mostly just for relaxation and even though i drive as fast as i pissibly can using AT i just like the carefree driving it delivers.
WHen driving games like GTR, GTR2 and Race '07 on my pc with MOMO i allways used manual.

As for wich is faster, i think MT wins on most tracks especialy technical ones, but on others i think the difference might not be as big.

Manual since GT1, as mentioned by many it gives you far more control over the car, it's far more immersive and much more fun... And quicker

Manual and I have used that method on both DS3 and Wheel. It's as easy with a DS3 as it is with anything else you just have to find a button mapping that suits your playing style.

Interestingly you'll find that some cars in GT simply don't go well with auto-change. An example is the Suzuki Cappuccino touring car that needs to be shifted a good thousand RPM earlier than the red line to get the maximum speed out of it

p.s. I do use auto when I get really lazy or there's an X1 involved

I used auto on the GT track on karts and for the X2011 as i can't keep up with the shifting.
Kart is definitely doable with manual though, i missed out on winning by 0.3 secs but changed to auto out of frustration.

Yea, I think that's the biggest problem with the wheel: you either need to buy a pro seat or build a setup for it yourself. Just putting it on your desk and playing like that feels... awkward at best. Besides, I usually play in my living room and I don't really keep a desk there, only a small coffee table.

But back on topic: I think the general question of this thread has been answered and manual wins hands down. But could the guys that answer (or have already answered) in favor of the MT specify if they use a wheel or a controller? I'm trying to see if using manual on the controller is widespread or is somehow isolated with a few pro or semi-pro guys.

I used the DS3 right up until GT6 release and now use my Wheel

BTW: WheelstandPro is the way to go with a wheel it can be folded and is the "mutts-nuts" IMO

Edit: ALWAYS used the stick for direction, could never get fine enough control with the D pad

Always, always Manual every time. You'll knock off a considerable amount of time off your laps using a manual gearbox, if used effectively of course. It aids cornering, and can speed up straight-line performance in cars that lose power before the redline.

Most GT players don't own wheels, many drive automatics in real life and may never have used a manual transmission car. It doesn't surprise me at all. MT mode is (imo) better) but that doesn't mean squat when a person's inexperience or ability means that using MT mode means not being able to drive in the game.

I've used MT mode since about 6 months into GT5, once I got the hang of using the controller (my first console and game controller), and since buying a wheel about a year into GT5, I can't imagine any other way and kinda hate those few events where we're stuck behind the wheel of an automatic.

Understandable, but for me, it was daunting using a controller at first to drive a car... Joystick instead of a wheel? a tiny little button instead of a brake peddle? Yikes! Based on my own experience when I first got into this back in late ?2010?, I would not be surprised to find quite a large percentage of players outside the US using AT mode, even if they drive an MT mode car in real life.

At a guess, I'd say that at least half do. No data to back up that contention of course, just a gut feeling.
