Just started using manual yesterday - and its just what I suspected; more control, more fun, and you are 'forced' to learn the tracks better. Just start out on one of the 'setting' courses with a slow 4WD and get the hang of it. Then try out the same track with faster cars, and in a couple of hours it will be second nature.

I do have a Logitech wheel though; I imagine driving manual with the standard controller must be a bit harder.

Good luck

For actual racing automatic is almost always my choice, allows me to concentrate on other things. But, I always race head to head with my friends manual, with cars from my garage.

I mainly use auto, but on the license tests, S-8, and all start from a stand still ones, i can gain many seconds using the manuel transmission over the auto.

it depends on the car b/c after modifications some cars have part of their powerband past redline and if you use automatic you will be losing out on some of your car's potential since automatic always shifts at redline.....these cars are typically ones with high horsepower per litre and considerably less torque than hp and small powerbands (eg.S2000)

Always have to go manual. I find in this game you get far more control over the car, being able to over rev once in a while when you need it can make a difference, and being able to pick your gear for a corner makes a huge difference. Eg, you pick high revs in 2nd for a corner (maybe real close to the rev limiter the whole way through, but engine can't quite rev out) where computer takes 3rd and bogs down. Also helps you power oversteer the car around corners which helps with high power FR cars.

I think if you spend a lot more time driving you'll get to the stage where you can't do the goods unless you're using manual. Suprised to see the votes are almost even. Mind you I started driving using the joystick for gas/brake control before I got the wheel, because I wanted more control over the car. Took me a long while to learn but I felt its worth it. I'm faster that way than using the buttons for brake/gas.

In the game I use automatic, because I don't want to think about it. But in real life I love the manual transmission.

I've always used manual, all the way through the GT series - but then again I've always used a steering wheel.

Can't figure out how people use the manual on the DSII. My gnarled old hands can't deal with that - it's like some of the moves in the fighting games - got me buggered how they manipulate the controller...

hrm
i run manual on street races and about 50% of the time on dirt.
also use a dual shock but have shifting set to r1/r2 buttons so gas/brake/shifting are right hand and steering is left hand and look behind me =)

I use automatic because I'm lazy, and the game is the right level of difficulty for me to be hard but not frustrating. For a few extra revs, you can hold down the r2 button on the DS2 to keep it in the current gear, and the revs go into the red, though you have to watch out you don't over do it, and they drop down again
