I got the game around midnight last night and played long enough to do one run through each cup with 100cc engines. So, I have all(?) of the tracks unlocked. Early impression: this is the most robust Mario Kart I've played since MK64. 👍 👍

My only criticism is the overly simplistic menus, with limited singleplayer options. Music/sound volume control would be nice, if I wanted to listen to something else from my laptop. MKTV is nicely implemented -- it saves full replays of your last six races without requiring a prompt -- but I don't think I'll be uploading anything. So far, I've blasted blue shells with the Super Horn at least as many times as I've been hit by one. Against the AI (no online yet), I've felt refreshingly undisturbed, but they're no pushover either.

Given my affinity for racing (naturally), it's quite nice to finally have something with that sort of replay value on Wii U.

I have to agree with you 100% Wolfe, although I've already uploaded a couple of videos. I've been hit by the blue shell a few times, just as I've got them a few times too, but I haven't came across the super horn yet.

I'll do my usual cup order of:

Mushroom
Shell
Banana
Flower
Star
Leaf
Lightning
Special

I want it to be 4:00pm ASAP .

I love it. I found 50cc way too easy so I went to 100cc which was still easy but it did have some tight and fun spots like this:

My first MKTV video then followed by

I found out that if you get a 3 star in 100cc then that applies for the lower classes too (meaning 50cc and 100cc are pointless if your good at 150cc).

EDIT: I don't think I can be able to race online like in MK7 :(. I keep getting error code 118-0502, 16 or 18

Does anybody have like a main character for racing? Cause I got Shyguy for racing, and I'm wondering if it's weird I'm only using him.

Check the avatar and sig. ;) haha. My copy finally came today! Not played it yet but the blue shell statue is a beauty. I have been playing MK8 all weekend at my girlfriend's!

So....UPS/Amazon :censored:ed up and I'm going to have to wait until the 2nd. :( Will there be a thread for the tournament group?

I'm not getting my game for another two weeks because of finals this week. :(

I don't have a main so far but I use Yoshi a lot. Trying to unlock the Circuit Special and Sponge Tyres.

I've mainly been using Yoshi and Shy Guy, with a mix a karts and bikes too. Does anyone know what combination of kart (or bike) and wheels is the fastest?

Fastest by top speed or quickest around the tracks?

I'm loving the ATVs, been using them often.

I've grown to like the standard kart with slick tires, for some reason I've been able to stay in the top 4-5 with that combo. I need to try those tires with the circuit special though.

I don't think there is a sure way to tell because Bikes are faster in some tracks while Karts are faster in others. Also it kinda depends on the person who is playing, I am usually the most fastest on Karts/Bikes/ATVs when stats are a little bit even but more in favour of Grip or Acceleration (Yoshi + Standard ATV + Roller fits me perfectly :p).

Unless there's some dominating combo I haven't unlocked/discovered that's good at everything, you'll always trade something. For example, high speed and low acceleration is fine if you're lucky enough to be left alone, but a disadvantage when you're struck by items. Low speed and high acceleration is good for getting away but won't help you keep the lead. And a compromise between the two is just a compromise.

Where personal playstyle fits in is with the vehicle type (drift style) and the trade between handling/traction and the other stats, since the drift style and handling dictate the lines you take through corners.

I will alternate between these characters:
Luigi*
Toad*
Baby Mario
Baby Luigi*
Rosalina

*= played the most

I played Battle Mode and I have an opposing opinion on what critics think.

It is actually quite enjoyable if you match the rules and tracks right. 2-3 Minutes is usually the way to go but 5 works just as good. Donut Plains 3 is the best for all item play. Mario Circuit is hell a lot of fun with only Mushrooms as long as you mainly keep going in your direction (the singular road layout allows for some epic Balloon stealing when encountering drivers). Toad Harbour is good for both Banana only and Mushroom only. While Dry Dry Desert is decent for Banana only. I haven't tried Shells only or the other tracks much but Bob-ombs only just sucks all together.

Not better than Mario Karts SNES - DS (DS is my favourite) but 10000 times better than Mario Kart Wiis and 7s battle mode.

@Wolfe I found out that focusing on Speed sacrifices Grip a lot as well as the Inside Drifting Bikes.

I just had an awesome race at Cloudtop Cruise. I was in 7th entering the second to final turn when I got the Crazy Eight and just threw everything everywhere hitting everyone in front of me, used the star and mushroom and secured a 4th place finish. I'm gonna have to upload that when I get back.

Unfortunately I forgot to write down the code before I shut the Wii U off so I'll post it when I get back home.

If I'm not mistaken that is 1800 my time and if that is the case I'd definitely be able to make it. Unless something unexpected comes up, of course.

I've just discovered that flicking your analogue stick in a specific direction can determine which trick you do. A great little feature.

Heh, I had no idea you could do that either. Speaking of controls though, what controller do you guys prefer? I like the Wii U Pro controller myself, I tried the gamepad and wasn't a fan at all.
